In the Gilded Age the City of Troy was one of the most prosperous cities in the United States and one of the most sought after places to live in the country. Elegant city residences were constructed by wealthy capitalists on each of the tree shaded boulevards leading in and out of the city while cross streets and alley residences generally housed the support staff thought to be necessary to comfortably oversee the day-to-day challenges of life in those times.
Life was certainly simpler in those years and public transportation was largely unknown, except for the horse drawn trolley line that ran north and south along Third Street. It was therefore on Third Street that Dr. De Luca decided to construct his home and to operate his medical practice. While Dr. De Luca was not a captain of industry, he certainly was forward-thinking in terms of expanding his practice and in 1908 he made an extraordinary by investing in the purchase of the first automobile delivered to a resident of the City of Troy.
This post advertizes the availability of a very large (1050 square feet) apartment that was occupied by Dr. De Luca and his family from the time the movie Troy in 1881until his retirement in 1934.
As it is currently configured this apartment has a spectacular informal living room/entry hall or dining room, depending upon the sensibilities of the occupant, and this room has high ceilings, hardwood floors, a working central fireplace and much architectural detailing. Of particular note are the Ionic columns that separate the formal parlor from the entry hall or dining area. Of course, the huge eat-in kitchen is complete with new ceramic countertops and appliances including a dishwasher, washer/dryer and gas stove (much better than electric). Off of the kitchen there is a rear porch that leads to a very quiet and secluded rear yard … complete with a patio area, lawn area and decorative plantings.
