My Beef About Restaurants (Center Square)

Heres a little bit of beef I could write about to kill an otherwise broing and monotonous work day… a while back, somebody wrote about working at a restaurant and how some people tip poorly and have absurdly high expectations – Im not necessarily going to write this as a rebuttal, but it’s definitely a good template, here goes.
I live right in the Center Square area of Albany, we have dozens of restaurants and take out places all over the city – as many of the residents know, its not uncommon to order out from these places as opposed to cooking at home after you’ve spent an hour and a half looking for a place to park, and even more time trying to wiggle through a pack of hippies sauntering down Lark St at least 5 or 6 side by side… even going out to an actual restaurant for a night out - how many times have you paid your check and wondered how much better that money could’ve been spent? I mean, Im not super frugal, Im not wealthy by any stretch either – Im well aware that if I don’t like the product or service that’s being offered, to keep my wallet in my pocket… its getting close to where I may just do that from now on!
Starting off with the take out places – which one of you out there is offering something completely unique? Something totally different that you cant get outside of Albany, that’s really difficult to replicate in your own home, some kind of food that next time your on the phone with your friends or family from Long Island, you’d say “I cant wait til youre up here next time, theres this place here that has the best ____ ever!”??? Ive heard something about an egg, but I cant seem to find a place that has this amazing Albany Style Egg… is that just a play on the Egg down at the plaza, Im pretty sure that’s teetering on lame if it is?
The only thing I can think of that’s even close to it is Wallyoli from Mild Wally’s… its gosh darn delicious and the marketing is ingenious, only thing is – has anyone ever ordered a pizza from them? I don’t know anyone in this city who’s made that mistake twice? Their pizza is simply inedible… its like a big soggy cracker with tomato soup and gub’ment cheese on it… Ive never gotten through an entire slice myself. That’s considered “the penalty” in certain circles!
Their subs aren’t too bad, the boneless wings are great, the Italian dinners are better than some of the others around but that’s not really saying a whole lot.
How about Romeos – ever have their Italian food? Makes you wanna puke on a Camaro! I swear, its like ghetto noodles drowned in red water. On the other hand, I think their pizza is quite good and the delivery guy is one of the nicest guys I know in Albany. He actually brings us a free 2-liter even when we forget to ask and he’ll even shake your hand after delivering the food – he’s the older skinny black guy that works there, somebody give that guy a raise cause he’s the only one bringing a good name to that joint!
Theres Soho – what a treat that place is… that place is 2 blocks from where I live, we ordered from there during the World Series – it took the guy 50 minutes to make a cheese and a pepperoni pie and get it to us – and still tried to hustle an extra tip out of me by saying “its very hard work to make all this food”… look fella, Im not saying its easy work, and I certainly don’t want to offend anyone personally but that’s your job! For close to 30 bucks plus wings… I know what a pain it is, I would - and often do - make it myself, but I’d rather pay someone else in this case so I don’t miss the game. If its too much for you to handle – trust me, there are plenty other places around here willing to deliver half-assed mediocre food whenever they feel like it – don’t come at me with some Ukrainian accent like youre feeding your whole family overseas… I dont mind tipping either, but get your sh*t together and give me a reason to be like “wow, that was quick!” or “holy crap, this is the best thing Ive ever tasted!” – I can assure you it’ll show in the tip!
In all these cases – I understand that its college kids and other young people who just haven’t found their spot yet – if youre gonna serve me food like it was pulled out of your Playstation, then don’t bitch when I pay you with the findings from in my couch – it’s the way it goes. On the other hand, take pride in what you do and it’ll show up in your check!
There are plenty more around here that I could mention, but I think the point has gotten across. Lets move onto the “sit down and eat” type places… before I get into the less appealing places - let me just say thanks to the powers that be for the Gateway! That place is Albany’s cornerstone! The last home of drunk breakfast, the double burger deluxe, and all else that is holy and sacred in the wide world of diner food! Actually, the Menands diner is pretty darn awesome too! Getting back to the meat of it… we cant really hold places like Fridays, Ruby Tuesday, Houlihans, etc. accountable, theyre all corporate entities who don’t really care how satisfied the city of Albany is with their product or service – the food was made long long before you showed up and is made to taste the same whether its 2 minutes old or two months. Again we have the same poppy college nitwits and random pot heads who stand there at the greeter station talking about whos friends with who and who got laid or whatever – if its not some half retarded cheerleader with her face buried in her iPhone? Again… nothing we can do about that except grin and bear it. I gotta settle down… I don’t mean to sound vicious, just annoying is all.
There are only a few in this category that deserve mention for being somewhat overrated in comparison to what youre getting in return. Lets start with Bombers – I think the story about the poker game or however the place started, it’s a rockin’ good read while youre waiting for your order, the bar and the events going on are are pretty wicked too (don’t get me wrong, it’s the Friday and Saturday night spot for sure!) we gotta figure something out with the grub though. I love that the guys there take a bit more pride or at least are more serious about their craft than many others, I would love to take you guys out shopping for some spices though. The food seems fresh and lord knows that sh*t is BIG, but I’d sacrifice some of the size if it had even the faintest hint of cumin or chili. Ive had your hot sauce before – I had to make sure the chick knew I was looking for the wicked sh*t deluxe when I asked… what she brought back makes me sweat just writing about it! Ive had some hot sauce before… that stuff was awesome! Im just saying, you guys apparently know what your doing, it would be awesome if you started doing it with the food is all?
I spose I’ll knock off there… I could probably write some more stuff but if youre still reading by now, you must have an even worse job than I do. I apologize if anyone was offended. Im sure there are plenty of faults in my grievance and even more people ready and willing to point them out… if it means anything, Im just trying to milk the rest of today so I can get out of here. Anybody else dig?

I have been buying my Gluten Free items from her since last year and loving everything she makes: fantastic breads, rolls, cookies, biscottis,muffins, danish, cheese crackers, pizza shells and more and she is taking orders for her Holiday pies only $10.50 for apple. apple crumb, pecan, pumpkin, banana cream, chocolate cream, vanilla cream.. oh my they are good .
