Statewide Campaign Coordinator: End Prison Based Gerrymandering (Albany, NY)
Public Policy and Education Fund of New York is seeking an energetic and motivated individual to coordinate an exciting statewide project to end Prison Based Gerrymandering. In New York State people of color are disproportionately incarcerated and then sent to upstate prisons usually far from the communities in which they live. The Census counts these incarcerated individuals towards the counties in which they are imprisoned rather than where they live, falsely inflating census counts by thousands which results in gerrymandered election districts drawn in rural upstate communities surrounding these prisons.
This not only decreases the voting power of prisoners’ home communities, usually New York’s cities around the state, but also many of the NYS Senators representing these “prison” districts reflect the polar opposite political agenda & beliefs than the prisoners. Even more unsettling, it’s in the self-interest of these Senators to vote against progressive drug policy reform or against the powerful & politically entrenched prison industry in NYS.
The campaign coordinator will organize a large network of organizations to mobilize broad based support for an end to the policy of prison based gerrymandering. The coordinator will also work with the coalition to increase voting among formerly incarcerated individuals through community education, voter registration efforts, and advocacy for state agencies to incorporate re-enrollment into re-entry, probation and parole programs.
Responsibilities will include:
• Making presentations and doing outreach to organizations
• Organizing coalition meetings and conference calls
• Coordinating earned media actions and large mobilizations
• Educating policymakers about the issues
• Developing educational materials and fact sheets
• Working with PPEF community organizers to build support in their local areas
Qualifications:
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• A creative approach to problem-solving, including strong analytic, strategic and planning skills
• Experience organizing issue campaigns and coalitions
• Ability to travel, including having a reliable car
• Ability to work evenings and weekends
Additional factors: Knowledge of New York State legislature is helpful, as is background in census, re-districting or voting rights issues.
Salary and Benefits: The salary is competitive, with full health benefits. Please send a resume and cover letter to: Shanna Goldman, Organizing Director, PPEF, 94 Central Avenue, Albany, NY 12206 or fax: 518 465-2890 or email sgoldman@citizenactionny.org.
PPEF is an equal opportunity employer and we seek to build an organization that aggressively pursues a racial justice agenda. People of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
