Original color charcoal by Steve Long (Ames, IA) $75

This is an original southwestern color charcoal of a cowboy trying to lasso a calf. This is an original in a frame. The art itself is in perfect condition but the frame could stand to be replaced. It is matted and the dimensions of the artwork is approx 8"tall X 12" wide.

Long Strokes: Profile of an Artist

The roots run deep and dark along most of the canvas, the beautiful buds barely peeking out toward the top third of the painting from beneath the depths, mirroring this artist.

There is a lot more to Steve Long than his innocent good looks reveal.

Long, 41, of Chandler, was inspired by art at an early age.

"I remember around the age of 5 or 6 being amazed by my dad's ability to draw dinosaurs upon request," said Long. Growing up in a creative family environment, he has learned to express himself through many forums including music and writing, but art is his preferred medium.

His current work reflects studies that contrast shape, texture, size and color. But the artist's main objective is to "hold the viewer's interest." A piece should be creative enough to spark new thoughts every time someone sees it.

"Points of Interest," Long's favorite piece, takes viewers on a journey through contrasts in color and texture. Sharp points and rounded edges melt together as the darker colors jump out of the painting, creating layers of depth.

Long's work also inspires creativity wherever it is displayed. David Hilker is the owner of Phoenix recording studio, Wild Whirled Music, where Long's work is the first thing you see when you enter. Hilker speaks fondly of the piece that hangs in front of the main console in their studio.

"The painting evokes a sense of controlled confidence," said Hilker. "Just let the creativity flow and it will lead you to where you are supposed to go."

Long has a degree from the Colorado Institute of Art for advertising design and a second from The Art Institute of Phoenix in computer animation.

"I love animation and am a big fan of Pixar's movies," he said.

For more than seven years, Long has been the lead graphic designer for KAET, the local public-television station based at Arizona State University. The position is detail-oriented and service driven. His work in fine art gives him a chance to be more expressive and creative, painting based on inspiration and feelings.

Enjoying the "freedom associated with creating fine art," his inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere.

"There are no wrong answers. It's whatever feels right to you," Long said.

With a laid-back, yet passionate personality, he channels the beauty that is all around him into art. Sonia Nunez has had a close friendship with the artist for three years. "Steve has a calmness about him," said Nunez, "a room in chaos becomes at ease when he begins to paint."

Creating for oneself is the only way to develop your own style, Long said.

"Some just flow right out, non-stop, while others are agonizingly slow and difficult," Long said, referring to the process of creating a piece.

For this devoted artist, the future holds larger canvases and possibly some other mediums, such as prints and sculpting.

"The possibilities are endless," said Long. "I will run out of life before I run out of ideas to paint."

I have a great idea for you to make getting a little something for everyone easy and affordable. Crocheted Snowflake Ornaments!!! These are great as they are easy to send in a card and affordable. Ranging unbeaded in price from .50 to $3 and beading adding .25 to $3.
These snowflakes are croched from 100% cotton thread and then can be stiffened in 3 ways. 1. glue mix, stiffest form, 2. sugar mix, pet and eco friendly 3. fabric starch for sewing or other crafting uses. Then a fishing line is added for hanging. Snowflakes range in size from 1.5” to 9.5”. Pricing is based on size and difficulty.
These can be used as ornaments, or for holiday crafts, or I have sold a number of the more heavily beaded ones in frames with a felted background. These beaded framed flakes run $10 for a 8x10 one while I still have frames.
If you are in the boone/ames area shipping cost will not be applied as long as you are easy to deliver to or can pick up or items. Otherwise shipping typically starts at $2.
