Beyond Welfare, Inc. Benefits from Vendor Sales @X-mas Craft Fair (Ames & Story County)
Beyond Welfare Inc., headquartered at 130 South Sheldon Avenue, is an organization that serves nearly 100 Story County families a year. The 12-year-old organization is an internationally recognized 501c3 nonprofit which works to 1) redefine marginalized individuals by their strengths, 2) demonstrate that all people on both ends of the social-economic continuum have both gifts and needs, and 3) build community where all have enough friendships, resources and meaning to live satisfying lives.
In particular, Beyond Welfare provides a healthy, tasty, balanced meal, followed by fellowship, every Thursday through its “Community Leadership Team” program. Free childcare is provided at ALL meetings so no one must miss out due to caring for their dependents. The meals are served 5:30 p.m. Thursdays at 159 South Sheldon Avenue in the basement of Collegiate Presbyterian Church.
Wheels to Work is another program BW spearheads to help low-income residents acquire and maintain vehicles and/or transportation critical to employment, education, and/or healthcare.
Prairie Rose Baking, owned by Mary Rose Anderson of Ames, will be donating 10% of the profits to BW from booth sales this Saturday at the city-wide Holiday Craft Fair, held at the City Auditorium in Ames. The craft fair at 515 Clark Avenue, Downtown Ames, will run 9:00 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. All-natural and sugar-free pies, low-sugar and no-sugar cakes, quick breads, cookies, rolls and more will be sold at Booth #70. Don't Throw it Away! ReUseIt (Story County )
The ReUseIt Network is an on-line forum that serves as a
tool to make connections between community members
who want to help each other, themselves, and their
environment. In a disposable society where many items are
discarded long before they have actually outlived their use,
The ReUseIt Network helps get things from people who
have them but don't want them to people who want them but
don't have them.
Our goal is to find new uses for unwanted items that would
otherwise be thrown into the trash. The primary benefit is
that it reduces the amount of reusable items that end up in
the trash with a secondary benefit of reducing the overall
amount of items thrown into landfills. Reusing items not
only cuts down on goods in landfills, but also helps reduce
the strain on our natural resources by keeping useable items
in circulation, reducing the need to manufacture additional
goods.
