Why must one start learning a second language at an early age?
Children hold a unique ability to master a second language. At about 7 months, a baby's brain starts long-term memory development. This is the beginning of what scientists and linguists call a child's critical period. From this stage until around age 12 or 13, when the brain begins losing its plasticity, children have their greatest potential to absorb and retain language skills.

Here are some facts about children’s language learning: An 18-month-old might say about 25 words. By the age of 24 months, this baby might say 300 words. At age of 3, she could use 900 words to conduct complex communication. When she is 12 years old, her reading vocabulary could be near 50,000 words!

I don't mind doing some light house-cleaning (dishes, laundry, etc.) while the child(ren) are sleeping. I'm not the best cook, but do not mind preparing easy meals for the kids, such as mac and cheese, chicken nuggets, etc. I do not mind diapering, potty training or preparing baby bottles and oatmeal/cereal mixtures, etc. I'm always singing children songs and helping them learn their ABC's. I work on Spanish a little too. I feel that thru playtime, children learn the most. I do not sit children in front of a tv show/movie all day long (unless parents say a tv show is fine) - interaction is key! Puzzles, stories, songs, music time, arts and crafts, dramatic play, free play and lots of outside/exploring time are what I believe in! A happy child equals happy parents :)

While I respect everyone's different opinions, and believe that everyone should be able to speak their minds, I would like to respectfully remind everyone that this is a forum for families, and childcare providers who are trying to find either a provider, or a family. This argument is taking a lot of space, and that is not how this service is meant to be used. I understand everyone's upset, as I am a nanny to three beautiful children myself, but please try to remember that down every road you travel there will be someone there saying something you don't like. As adults we must make the choice to let it go, and allow karma to do what it will.

Nanny Info...Settle the argument (Michigan)

Legally, households with "household employees", which includes Nannies, are required to report the money paid to and take out the taxes for the household employees. (It's true, click here to find out more The Nanny Tax ) Therefore, Nannies should be making at least minimum wage. Also this means that a family will most likely have to pay a service or an accountant to take out the taxes unless they themselves are accountants. So...if you don't make enough money to pay at least minimum wage per hour of work and a tax service, start looking at Daycares. It is illegal in the state of Michigan to charge to watch children that often and not take out taxes. I have worked in a number of Daycares and I have also been a Nanny and there are advantages for both. While Nannies are very good at teaching children and interacting with them , daycares are actually very good for children, particularly only children. They learn to interact well with others and from my personal experience, children in Daycares start to talk sooner and speak more clearly. Also they typically walk sooner and are more confident while playing with others. They develop good people skills. Daycares are not just a cheaper option, but can be a great educational option for your children.
It's not an issue of "you're not good enough". Look at it this way: there's a nice big screen TV you want but you can't afford it so you have the smaller, affordable one. It's the same with Nannies. They are a luxury service that people must pay a higher price for. So stop taking offense to everything. I myself have been a victim of the "economy" and many Nannies are losing jobs because their employers are losing jobs. So don't think we are some elite few who are only doing this for a hobby. We do care about others, particularly children. I personally have a huge respect for single parent families and am willing to help the best I can. BUT...if I had children I would not hire a Nanny for them because I cannot afford it. Being a Nanny is a job, not a hobby. Having a Nanny is a luxury service, not a right or a necessity. Nannies are not the only source for childcare and they should not be expected to provide their service for a lower price for those who decide they want things they cannot afford.

You think that $5 an hour for 3 children is a good wage? I'm not a nanny, I'm a babysitter & I would NOT take that kind of a wage!! Last summer I had the opprotunity to work as a part time nanny & was paid $350 a week, part time, for one child!!! The parents definantly weren't lawyers or doctors, just average people making average money!! I don't see what the fuss is all about!! If she prefers to work for lawyers & doctors, that's HER choice, not ours!

It's kind of like when the people we work for prefer older women over college students & vice versa!! Nobody is on a high horse!! It's all about preferences!!!

You said that you make $350 a week. Well, if you do then good for you!! If she wants $600 a week, then that's her choice & who are you to tell her that she can't make that much money!!

Also, it's not that hard to find someone on Craigslist offering to pay $600 a week! I've seen people post on here saying they are willing to pay $15 an hour!! If we do our math correctly, that's $600 a week ($15 an hour, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week)!!!!! So, it's NOT hard to find a good paying job on CL!!

I wouldn't even accept $5 an hour for one child, let alone 3!! That's not even minimum wage!! If you aren't willing to pay me at least $8 an hour, then you can't hire me!! Sorry, but this is how I make a livng, & I have bills to pay just like everyone else!!!

Home based Childcare - Free play and fresh air! (Ypsi (Depot Town))

I'm a full time mom of one (my son is 2) who is looking to add one or two other children into our mix.

I can offer a media free environment (absolutely no TV or movies), healthy and homemade organic food and snacks, and plenty of free play. My parenting style is very child-centered and our home is based around safety and fun. We are active outdoors every day, usually a few times, either playing in our yard with balls, art supplies, bikes and tricycles, or we make the 5 minute walk to Prospect Park and enjoy swings, slides, climbing and more. Indoor activities include blocks, reading, coloring, painting, and baking yummy cookies and muffins.

Ideally, your child(ren) would be around 18 months to 3, and you would be looking for a one or two days per week. Full or half days would be fine, and I am very open to last minute notice. Which is how life happens sometimes:) We can also talk about payment, potentially a partial childcare swap could work. Otherwise, I am thinking $50 for a full day for one child and a little more for two.
