Appalachian Flat-Foot/Buck/Clogging Instructional DVD (Asheville) $15

ABOUT THE DVD:

This is an instructional DVD that teaches you how to do Flat-footing. Straight from the heart of the Appalachian Mountains I traveled much and watch 1000s of dancers and condensed all their different styles down into seven basic steps. I teach students extra easy using a method I developed myself known as Progressive Transition Strategy. This method starts the student off with very simple steps and increasingly integrates more complex steps and more frequent transitions. There are no complicated sequences to learn and you can be up and dancing in 10 or 15 minutes with this system with the first couple of steps. Through over 1000 students I have found certain learning patterns that makes it much easier. I know which steps a student should learn first and which ones students can easily transition between. By the end of this DVD video a student will know seven steps, several variations and how to do transitions. I found people learn faster, retain more, and have more fun using this method which this DVD is based on. I remember how hard it was to break down the steps when I was first learning, and this inspired me to develop a system in which people could learn easier.

In all of the sections I first talk about the step, then slowly demonstrate it, and then demonstrate it to slow music so you can follow along. This DVD has the following sections and steps:

Instructional

1. Bending of the knees – In this section I talk about the music and how the motion of the body fits with the downbeat of the music. Almost ANYBODY can do this section.
2. Stepping – Here we learn how to use the motion of our feet by stepping to the ‘downbeat’ of the music.
3. Three Sound Basic – This step prepares your for more advance moves and introduces you to making a motion with your feet on the ‘upbeat’ of the music.
4. Mitchell – This simple flat-foot move is based on a dancer from the Galax, Virginia area known as Mitchell Robinson. It’s a heal-step combination and fits into other steps as your style progresses.
5. Zig Zag – This step is an aspect of old time flat-footing that has largely been forgotten. I have incorporated into my classes to bring it back. It’s a step most beginners can do very well, and it’s the step where people really start to have fun with this style of dance.
6. Chugs – This step is a forward and back motion (drag / slide). Flat-footing gets harder when you start using this step, but it sure is fun.
7. Buck Step – This step is the foundation for many rhythms and melody type moves. It’s a harder step to do, but it is excellent to learn because there are so many steps that can transition in and out of this step and it prepares you to learn the Tennessee Walking Step.

Commentary

The commentary consists of all the material in the Instructional section, but has a voice overlay that talks about each step in more detail. Me and another flat-footer talk about how we learned these steps and where we acquired them.

ABOUT FLAT-FOOTING:

Flat-Foot dancing is a rhythmic individual percussive step dance originating out of the Appalachian mountain range. Chugs, steps, brushes, and scuffs are used to produce sounds that are in time with the music, often old time fiddle tunes. It’s closely related to Buck dancing and often goes by other names such as Appalachian Clogging, Clogging, or Back Stepping. I use the term Flat-footing the most because that is what they called it where I learned most of my steps. I have won several awards for my old-time flat-foot style of dance. Flat-footers can be found at almost any fiddle convention, music jams, and dances throughout the Appalachian Mountains. Normally takes 2 to 3 lessons to learn the basics. I teach students using a method I developed myself known as Progressive Transition Strategy. This method starts the student off with very simple steps and increasingly integrates more complex steps. By the end of the class a student has normally learned 7-9 steps and how to do transitions. Through over 1000 students I found people learn faster, retain more, and have more fun using this method. My students have options to learn from me in several different ways:

1. By my beginners instructional DVD video.
2. Through a scheduled private class in the Asheville area.
3. At a scheduled public class in the Asheville area.
4. Through a scheduled private class in your area.
5. As part of a weekend dance camp or fiddle convention.
6. As part of a weeklong dance camp.

Portable raised 24 x 32 in dance boards are now in stock. The raised height gives them some of that deeper sound and a gentle spring/bounce to them keeps you dancing longer. They can be interconnected to make a large dance floor almost anywhere. $25 to $35. Write for details.

So, I danced at the Apple Barn last night. It was amazing! My contra is so much better, my waltzing has improved for sure, and MY FEET ARE ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!! Haha. It seems like every little break in moving, my feet were tappity-tapping away, doing some of the flatfoot moves you taught me. It was GREAT! And suddenly, all of the best leaders at the dance were asking ME to dance!!!! Wooohoooooo! Anyways, my heart is just overwhelming with gratitude. I just wanted to share a little of the joy I feel. The teaching style was comfortable. you were receptive to questions and answered them well. You clearly led the group without being at all pushy or overbearing. I felt encouraged to learn and excited about the subject. It's clear that you have put a great deal of thought into structuring the class and making it easy for people to pick up the basics without overwhelming them with detail. I also enjoyed the video segments, as they gave a clearer idea of how traditional dancers flatfoot, and how that differs from clogging.

Paul put on a Basic Flatfooting Workshop before one our group's dances. Paul taught in a logical, sequential manner. One step was taught and practiced. Then another step. Then the two were put together in a series. Then a third step was taught and added to the series. This sequencing allowed the participants to learn the individual moves and then stream them togehter as a dancer does. There was a break that included some historical video footage of flatfooting that showed the participants a little of the historical background as well as how the moves are put together by some very practiced dancers. Overall I think everyone who participated came away with a few basic steps, an appreciation of a bit of the history, and the fact that flatfooting can be praticed almost anywhere.

I thank you for giving the Class. I was fun and informative and you did a fine job of teaching it.I'm going to recommned your coming to a Contra Dance here in Charlotte and doing the same . Also I'm going to recommend you to the Charlotte Folk Society for doing the same. It was neat. Tell me what you might charge if you did something like that, ball park figures are fine.I play the bass fiddle with a number of folks playing Old Time Fiddle Tunes and one reason I like it is because it's a part of history kept alive, just like you. Keep doing what your doing. I thought your class was alot of fun but more so you made Flat Footing very simple to understand and do.

1) I loved the free-style opportunities and LOVED watching the videos. I also liked watching you demonstrate the more complex steps. I would have LOVED to have seen you do something from one of your competitions!!!! There's nothing more motivating than to see it done live!!! I liked the fact that you used the same music each time. It helped create a "routine". I personally love this as I Irish dance. And even though the technical aspects are different the main idea of rhythm is the same....so I really loved doing something that didn't require me to have me feet turned out and crossed!!! LOL

2) Very structured and well thought out presentation. Teaching style was clear and concise (and I should know...I'm a teacher so I look for those things :) )

3) You provided a level of difficulty for everyone...from the most basic to the more advanced. It was nice to cover the whole spectrum as it can be difficult when you have so many people.

4) I would describe the class as an introduction to flat-footn :) You did a great job incorporating visual, auditory and kinesthetic aspects to keep the interest up. I would definitely recommend the class to those who attend Gypsy next year.

Keep on teaching, Paul. It's always nice to have a teacher (of anything) who's passionate about what they do. That passion is contagious!!
