I have used every version of Ableton's Live since 1.0, and it rocks. As an expressive artist's tool, it can't be beat for letting producers create great music out of a few basic clips and some effects. However, Live 5 may be a little different from other audio programs you may have used. Though it is a strong tool for freeform performance, it excels as a loop construction toolbox (like Sony's Acid Pro or Apple's GarageBand). If you need audio for your video productions and don't have the budget for a whole band, Live 5 will provide you with easy methods to create songs quickly.


A new feature in Ableton Live 5 called Beat Repeat helps users deconstruct and reconstruct a beat into thousands of variations. Other new features include Clip Freeze, which is now common in DAW software, and tempo-matching for MP3 files.
Here is a typical workflow: you drag various looped clips over to a timeline and the program puts them all in sync; you layer different sounds, strings, guitar, drums, etc.; and it all meshes together like it was meant to be. But there is another way to work with Live as well. Think of all your loops not as running left to right in a timeline, but running up and down, top to bottom, stacked in groups. Imagine slicing these groups horizontally into scenes. You can toggle the scenes on and off in realtime, as you record. This way, you start to really develop what many loop programs lack, and that's actual song construction.

Of course, you can always work in the normal timeline way, but then you'd be missing out on a lot of the power — not to mention fun — of what Live is all about. The program is used live by DJs to create songs in realtime, but more and more it's being used by video professionals who want spontaneous scores that have a human element to them.

In addition to this unique approach to scoring, you can drag and drop audio effects onto different tracks. Live offers echoes, compressors, gate, phasers, distortion, and many more amazing digital effects. Did I mention that any of these tracks can be MIDI as well? You can easily mix MIDI and sampled files in the same song. In fact, you can plug in VST virtual instruments for millions of combinations.

Want to add a little swing and make the song sound more natural? Just dive into any sample and adjust the warp markers. These markers typically are set to the beats; however, if you drag them off slightly you'll get a more natural, human sound. Want to preview new audio loops? You can do it while your current song is playing. The software is smart enough to play it right in sync with your current production so you can hear what it will actually sound like before you add it. Another cool feature is that any loop you add effects to, alter, move warp markers on, etc., can be saved as a new loop (called a Live Clip). Just drag it over to the folder list on the left. All your settings and adjustments are saved with it.

What is new and improved in the just-released version 5? Lots. One of the coolest new features is Clip Freeze. Often you'll add effects, tweaks, and other things to a track; now you can freeze it and create a sample of the track. This not only allows you to free up the CPU from constantly running all these effects, but you can also bring the project to another computer running Live 5 — with all the effects intact.


Ableton Live 5 offers innovative “scene” views to help turn loops into songs.
Live 5 now brings in MP3 files and tempo-matches them to the current project. Live 5 is a hot program for doing mash-ups, megamixes of different, unrelated songs, and now it's easier than ever to keep everything rockin' together.

Ableton Live has always had a great file browser built into the interface (it's always there; you don't have to open a requestor). Now it's got a built-in search field, making it very easy to find the clips you're looking for. One unique new browser option is that effect presets are listed in the browser. Take, for example, a reverb effect. You can drag it over to apply it to a clip as always. But now you can click the arrow next to the reverb effect, and out pop all the presets. So you can drag over the “basement” reverb preset you created and apply it just like a filter.

Live 5 comes with a new library of musical sounds. You get actual loops to experiment with and use, and also a large library of Live Clips, which are audio clips with presets and effects already assigned to them.

The program comes packed with filters and effects, including some new ones such as Beat Repeat, which allows deconstructing and then reconstructing a beat into thousands of variations. Phaser and Flanger now offer classic '70s guitar riffs for your productions. Saturator wipes the digital cleanliness off your track with some warm, punchy distortion. Arpeggiator allows you to shift grooves and velocities off a bit for the realistic feel of an actual person playing an instrument. Most great audio programs for scoring contain a variation of this tool, and it's a very welcome addition to Live 5.

Live 5 has a lot going for it. I especially like the way the Help system is laid out: as a series of tutorials that you can toggle on or off and follow from inside the program. The text and screenshots are within the program, making the learning process quick.

As a matter of fact, the learning curve on the program is pretty flat. There are many deep features, that's for sure, but you could spend about 10 minutes checking out the tutorials and you would have all the knowledge needed to score songs and create compositions on the fly, including adding your own recorded voice. Live 5 makes it easy to arm any track for recording, and once the segment is recorded (in realtime as your project is playing), it syncs it up and rolls it right into the song.

Another great feature is the interface. So many programs are becoming a maze of requestor boxes and pulldown menus, and Live 5's nonstandard layout does put a lot of information right in front of you. There is a pulldown menu, but chances are you won't use it much. Live's interface keeps everything on one screen, which scales to any size monitor. Also, a handy description window gives a paragraph or two about whatever you happen to be mousing over.

My only suggestion for running Live is to make sure you have a fairly robust system and an audio card with low latency. Latency is the delay time (in milliseconds) from when you hit or click something on the interface to when you hear a sound produced. Audio creation programs like this need to be spontaneous. Thankfully, most recent audio cards are up to the task. If you want to get heavy with effects and multiple tracks and score in realtime, a speedy computer is handy. However, I have also been running Live on an older laptop, and it keeps up as long as I don't get too crazy.

Live 5 is a different kind of audio program; it's designed to allow media artists to be expressive and experimental. If you are looking for an audio editing program or a loop program that does most of the work for you, it will certainly do the job. But if you are willing to roll up your sleeves and start clicking and experimenting in realtime, no other audio program out there can bring out the hidden musician in you like Ableton's awesome Live 5.

Echo Layla 20bit Recording interface (Asheville/Marshall) $75

I have an ECHO Layla 20bit recording system for sale. I bought this new and used it for a few years then moved on to Pro-Tools. It is a great sounding and stable interface and is compatible with most DAWs (except Pro Tools). I have the PCI card, cable, and Break Out box (rackmount). I may have the original driver disk but I am not sure. I do have a disk with the latest drivers. call me for pics. Below are the specs that I got off the net.

I received the Layla via UPS from Echo. The first thing I noticed was the sheer weight of the unit. This is serious hardware.

The card comes with a rack-mountable breakout box that houses the features below and connects to a PCI soundcard interface via a provided cable. I read the included manual and installed the card. The install went flawlessly. I had previously gone to EchoAudio’s website and knew that a new driver had been released for the Layla. I downloaded it and followed their instructions.
The new driver installation process EchoAudio employs is a bit cumbersome but effective. The user must download the driver via the web in a .zip file to the desktop or a temporary directory, then unzip it to a floppy disk. Then, the user must open the utility program on the floppy, instruct it to remove the previous Layla drivers, remove the floppy, reboot the computer but then put the floppy back in when Windows asks for the best driver for the device. Windows then finds the appropriate driver on the floppy and installs it.

The Echo driver ver. 5.01 fixes some bugs that in version 5.00 and provides DirectSound compatibility for the Layla. Among the included items is the Echo Controller - - a user interface that installs on the systray of Windows desktop. With the Controller you can route signals, mute channels, set input/output sources of the Layla. The input levels can be set at –10db or boosted to +4dB. Another feature is the software adjustable input levels, which I found to be very useful. In addition, the input VU meters are fast and accurate, giving me important information about the input signal.

The Layla also comes with a special version of Cool Edit Pro, a limited version of Syntrillium's flagship product Cool Edit Pro. For basic recording purposes it is quite sufficient to get you up and running with multi-track recording.

The Layla employs 20-bit converters for analog to digital conversion. (Echo has informed me that they are coming out with a 24-bit/96kHz version of Layla soon). I did the "real world" noise floor test with all inputs set to zero. The analog noise floor at 16-bit was -85dB, at 32-bit (in Cool Edit Pro SE) it was -92dB (Windows recognizes the 20-bit converters as 24-bit). I then tested the digital S/PDIF noise floor that measured -92dB. This is a very quiet soundcard. Since the analog to digital converters are housed in the breakout box, away from the internal electronic noise inside the CPU, it is able to achieve very low signal to noise levels.

I recorded some music (acoustic guitar, vocals and drum programs) with the Cool Edit Pro – Special Edition, the Digital Orchestrator, and n-Track Studio. The card worked flawlessly within each application. I then listened back to the recording. The sound quality was simply astonishing. I was able to hear very deep bass and very crisp highs. The card was able to capture transient harmonic tones off of my acoustic guitar that were beautiful. Simply, I love the way this card sounds. The robustness of the sound quality was many degrees better than the other cards I have used in my studio.

For a professional application or the advanced home user, this card is one of the best available. The flexibility of the multiple inputs and outputs will accommodate all but the most demanding recording needs. You can record up to ten different tracks at once - - eight analog ins and two S/PDIF at a time. If you need more, you can install several Laylas in a PC and sync them together with the word clock. You can play back ten tracks (or more if two Laylas) at once. Echo has also provided MIDI input/thru/out connectors on the breakout box for your MIDI devices.

The use of the ¼" connectors is standard in recording studios and with professional level equipment. The breakout box makes connectivity significantly easier than plugging into the soundcard itself. If you are very serious about recording on your PC, and can afford it, you cannot go wrong with the Layla.

Vintage Premier 4 piece Drum Set (Asheville, NC) $250

4 piece vintage drum set by Premier (England). Red sparkle finish. Not sure of the exact age, but at least from the 1970's I am guessing, maybe older. The sizes are 12" rack, "16 floor, 14" snare and 20" bass and these were used as a jazz type set. Have bass pedal (original), vintage Slingerland hi-hat stand, snare stand and Slingerland metal snare that sounds amazing. Have new heads on snare and rack tom. Drums sounds great and recently cleaned up and are in decent shape for their age. Could use a little polishing on the chrome in places and floor tom heads. Also have the orignal Premier matching wooden snare that needs considerable TLC. Will throw in two vintage ride cymbals (20") and one is a sizzle ride (Can't find any stamps so not certain of the brand). Willing to negotiate the price within reason making this a great deal on a really cool vintage set.

Only piano mode can currently be selected. The buttons for the other patches don't switch modes like they should. Maybe an easy fix.

No stand, which means no pedals. But they can probably be replaced fairly easily.


Given to us by friend's mom, but it's pretty heavy (80 - 100 lbs) so we'd rather someone who can fix it and use it have it.

I bought it to play electric banjo but soon found out that my electric banjo doesn't sound good through guitar amps. So it hasn't been used that much.

There are three stars on the bridge and another four stars in laid on the head stock and 27 stars scattered up the fret board a total of 34 stars in all. They are all random sizes and inlaid in mother of pearl and abalone. They're not very many of these guitars, chances are you've never seen one before. It has a beautiful florentine cutaway which makes for excellent access to the upper frets. And the onboard sound system is absolutely amazing. This guitar is very unique you'll probably never see another one like it. Because the sound board is solid 4 A flamed maple the acoustic voice is not as rich as say Sitka spruce would be but there is virtually no feedback when you plug this guitar up . It sounds absolutely like it should , acoustic. Gibson knew exactly what they were doing when they made this one. $2800. I have been focusing on restoring/modifying Tube PA and Monitor Amps for several years now and in that time I have worked on most of the more common brands: RCA, Dukane, Bogen, Magnecord, Ampex, Rauland, Califone, Masco, Stromberg, Calrad, Magnasync, Wollensak, Frazier, Lafayette, Heathkit, Grommes, Precision Electronics, Akai, Roberts, Sony, McGohan, Knight, Newcomb, and others that are more obscure, unlabeled or one-offs. I make most of these amps into straight-up guitar/bass/harp amps, but some of them can also be made into preamps, hybrid preamp/poweramp devices, and even tube FX units! There are many unique and enormously useful recording features that I feature in my modified designs like: speaker-level line output, headphone jack, speakerless operation, lo-z microphone input, negative-feedback switching, pentode/triode switching, synchronous sag, and even the ability to tube swap without rebiasing are available based on the donor amp. I can either wire in a popular clone circuit based on your favorite guitar amp design, hybridize multiple designs, or come up with a completely new design for a more unique tone.

I am extremely reasonable on price and usually have a 4-6 week turnaround. I don't have a set hourly rate because I work slowly and methodically. Instead of timing my work, I base my prices on the task and then take my time ensuring the task is done properly without a stopwatch. The average PA amp can cost from $99 for a recap/refresh to $299 for a complete modification/restoration depending on the complexity of the amp and mods desired. Prices average around $199. Also for sale is a 5 string banjo made by Rogue. It was purchased in May of 2008 from musiciansfriend.com. It has a resonator, but I removed it so that I could mic the banjo up to play gigs. It currently has an open back, but I will give you the resonator when you buy it. I am asking $100.

This guitar is in excellent condition and has recently had the frets leveled and a compensated bone saddle installed to ensure great tone and intonation. The slender neck and medium/low action makes for easy playing. The sound is balanced very nicely with great lows and mids, and well-defined highs without being too bright. Besides the two small scratches on the back (see pics) everything is in excellent condition and very solid. No cracks, no repairs, no buzzing - NO ISSUES. This one won't be needing any work done on it anytime soon. It has been played, but cared for, and is nowhere near being worn, much less worn out. Like all Guilds it's built like a tank and sure to last!

The original hard shell case has some marks on it and a little tarnish on the latches, but everything is solid and in good working order - hinges, latches, handle, etc.

Made in the USA at Guild's Westerly, RI plant during their last year of production there (FMIC moved Guild to Corona, CA in November 2001). A great guitar from arguably the most underrated guitar manufacturer.

Okay, so yeah yeah yeah - if it's so great, why part with it? Another guitar acquisition, of course!. So to free up some funds and adhere to my strict one-in-one-out rule, I'm putting this one on the block. Of course, I’m of the opinion that one can never have too many Guilds, but I’m mainly an electric player and keep multiple solid bodies, but only one acoustic at a time.

I'm not particularly excited about the idea of shipping this one - you really need to hold an acoustic in your hands to see if it works for you - but I might consider it. PayPal only. Packing, shipping, insurance costs, and all that. No trades, unless you happen to have a Guild dreadnought in the vein of what I'm looking for, preferably rosewood.

Conklin 5 String Bass (Micaville, NC) $400

This is a Groove Tools by Conklin 5 String Bass Guitar.

Transparent red finish is immaculate. Has a very fast, very thin 5-piece neck (wenge/purpleheart woods) with purpleheart fretboard and swamp ash body. Active electronics with two humbuckers, volume, blend switch and bass and treble controls.

Black hardware withhigh quality tuning keys and fully adustable bridge. Action is low and fast, neck is great for slapping/thumping/popping. It's got strange shape but it balances well and plays like a dream. It is very versatile and could suit many styles of music.

Music Man 100RD Head and 4x12 cab (Asheville) $475

Looking for a good loving home for an awesome Music Man 100 watt head and 4 x 12 Fender cab. Nothing is wrong with them I just don't really play through it anymore. Very punchy and full bodied sound. Cosmetically the cab is in rough shape, a cigarette burn on top and our cat has scratched it some, but the speakers have been changed once and they sound great. The cab was wired for 4 ohms from the guy I bought it from, and it is a tilted cab. The head looks fine and sounds amazing. Normal volume, gain, reverb and eq controls. I prefer using a separate overdrive or distortion pedal, a tube screamer with this stack sounds really freakin good. Perfect deal for a rock band that's on a tight budget. Package deal here, not really interested in selling them separately unless you really convince me otherwise :>)

Vintage Organ turned MIDI-USB/Ableton controller... (avl) $1

What you have here is a 1974 Kimball Swinger electric organ that has been completely gutted and retrofit to become a truly one of a kind MIDI-USB controller. I installed 24 Happ Arcade Buttons and a 4-way Happ Competition Arcade Joystick into a wooden tier built by my good friend Grant Dula (dulawoodworking.com) All of which are wired to a Hale Micro (halemicro.com) UMC32 PCB. This is a plug n play USB device, just plug it in and shes good to go, no software setup etc. There is also a small section built to house 2 Korg Nano Controllers, I use the Nano series because they are sturdy, cheap and easily replaceable. I built this out of frustration with the average MIDI/Ableton controller which cost several hundred dollars, has far too many blinking lights, buttons, are in no way intuitive or easy to use, and in my opinion not trust worthy for heavy gigging. Happ buttons and joysticks (http://www.happcontrols.com) are virtually indestructable and the UMC32 is extremely compact and reliable; anybody with a soldering iron could fix this in 5 minutes if it were to break. It also has 44 original Kimball keys which are wired for MIDI use as well and feel much better than your average midi keyboard. I replaced the back of the organ with plexi-glass and put some old x-mas lights in there for appearance, but you can easily open it up and do what ever you want with it. Also 4 of the 12 pedal notes are wired for MIDI use. I did this because I use Ableton Live for looping guitars and need a hands free way to engage loops in a live setting. Although it appears to be very heavy it only weighs roughly 50lbs, and I installed a handle on each side for easier moving. With 2 people it can easily be transported. If you work with Ableton this thing is amazing to have, and would make a great addition to any studio. It could also very easily be used live as I intended it for.

Lap Steel Gibson EH 150 price cut (Asheville) $1295

1936 or '37 vintage lap steel with the Charlie Christian pick up. I replaced the original tuners and had the pick up re wound which resulted in the same fat tone but much improved output. Flamed maple top and quilted back. Some chips and scratches but in pretty good shape for its age. Plays and sounds great. Hard shell case does not look original but fits well.
