Private & Small Group Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Lessons (South Austin)
Welcome to Nashida Sonsuz! Austin's newest Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Academy.
If you've been keeping up with the latest in fitness fashion, you've asked yourself if you could learn how to belly dance. The answer is "YES!" Belly dance is the natural way that a woman moves her body. It was designed to help women bond with each other in day to day life, and, in many cultures, was also used to help women develop the muscles necessary to cope with the pains of labor and child birth. Any girl or woman of any age (4 and up) can learn how to belly dance. Even if you're 60 and never danced more than 3 steps in your entire life!
I am Phoenix Alima, a belly dance instructor who has been teaching and performing Tribal Fusion Belly Dance and Burlesque since 2004. I have recently moved to South Austin and my private academy, The Nashida Sonsuz Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Academy, is currently open for enrollment!
Nashida Sonsuz offers private and small group lessons in beginner and intermediate, Tribal, Gypsy, Cabaret, Burlesque, & Hip-Hop Fusion Belly Dance, as well as Pre-natal Yoga Belly (a special low-impact combination of Yoga and Belly Dance basics for expecting mothers) and Burlesque classes. I believe that each and every one of us has different skills and abilities which make us beautiful. Because of this belief, I craft each and every lesson to challenge you and help you grow, while respecting any physical ailments or maladies you may have. (If you have bad knees, a bad back, limited flexibility, ect... I will not force you into movements that you cannot handle or makes you feel inadequate.)
Private lessons are $20/hr.
Small group lessons are $40/hr for 2 students and $45/ hr for 3 students.
That's $20/student if there are 2 of you and $15/student if you split it 3 ways!

Math, Chemistry, Physics (UT)
I am a chemical engineering senior at UT and when I first took introductory engineering level calculus, chemistry, and physics at UT as a freshman, I remember being completely overwhelmed by the complexity of these subjects. The thing that really helped me master this complex material was going to professors' office hours or the T/A sessions to get answers for specific homework questions, or to maybe explain concepts that didn't make sense in lecture. It was in those one-on-one settings where I learned most effecitvely, and from that I've realized that learning is much more efficient if you can have direct interaction with a teacher. The other thing I've realized is that, even though UT charges up to $1500 per class, they often fail to supplement the regular lecture with adequate time to come and talk directly with professors or TA's, and this is also true for high school students as well. That's where I come in- I can provide you with the kind of help a competent T/A or even professor could give because not only have I already taken and mastered these courses, I also have 2 years of experience tutoring other college and high school students. I have had great success in enabling my students to achieve the grades they desire, and have found that as long as a student is motivated and willing to put enough time and effort into studying- they can master any subject they choose. I charge $25 per hour, and also offer discounts for tutoring multiple people at a time. I'm usually free in the afternoons on weekdays and on weekends- email to get more information or to schedule a time!

Guitar Lessons With Versatile, Experienced, and Fun Teacher! (South Austin)
"Steve has the three most important qualities you could want in a music teacher: The theoretical knowledge of the student of music; the practical experience of the professional working musician; and, perhaps most importantly, the understanding and ability of a natural educator. Not just a great music teacher, but a great teacher." - Dan C.
Hi folks!
If you are serious about learning to play guitar or bass, why don't you take lessons with one of the most experienced, dedicated, and fun guitar teachers in Austin?
“Steven is an excellent guitar teacher – he truly rocks. He has a very strong understanding of the instrument as well as a very strong ability to adapt to your style in order to help you achieve your guitar goals. I’ve taken lessons from a few different teachers and, by far, Steven has helped me to increase the breadth of my playing quickly and more precisely than anyone else I’ve ever worked with.”
- Amos S.
I am a guitar and bass instructor who has been teaching for over 15 years. I have taught hundreds of students, and have gotten great results on a consistent basis. I have two music degrees and one education degree, and have a developed teaching philosophy, as well as a commitment to being the best teacher I can be.
“I've found my passion for guitar again after being “stuck” for years, unable to figure out how to keep improving – I'm enjoying guitar like when I first started.”
- Chris B.
In addition to being a guitar and bass teacher, I am a performer in Austin-based Blues and Jazz bands. I am also a singer-songwriter, and enjoy teaching songwriting and composition to students (if desired)
"Steve is an extremely knowledgeable and friendly teacher. He helped me learn a variety of songs, everything from children's songs to country ballads to Mexican folk music. He also taught me the basics and gave me exercises and strategies to increase my flexibility and range. I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in learning to play the guitar.
- Janna J.
Unfortunately, many "guitar teachers", while often good musicians, have little idea of how to teach subjects such technique, theory, or rhythm. Others attempt to foist their musical tastes upon their students, forgetting that their job to be an enabler, not a pundit for their favorite artists or styles.
"Steve Baranowski is a great guitar teacher because he helps his students develop their own distinct abilities--not those of his own"
- Adam S.
I believe that being a great teacher is a rare chemistry of ability, education, insight, patience, experience, honesty, real-world knowledge, good humor, and love of teaching. I can bring these things to you.
“Steve makes learning the guitar fun. You’re guaranteed to laugh or at least smile a few times every lesson while you improve your knowledge of the guitar”
- Ben H.
I also believe that the job of a teacher is to create freedom for a student; a freedom, earned through practice, to take the music he or she plays in any direction desired, and to become a self-sufficient artist with a real identity. In other words, to help you be the musician you really want to be.
“Steve blends expert musicianship and an eclectic sense of humor to create a teaching style all his own. Backed by an immense knowledge of all things music, he caters to both the beginners and experts, whether they wish to play blues or punk, jazz or straight up rock n roll.”
- Chris H.
All levels welcome! Ages 9-90!
“I went to several guitar teachers before finding Steve, who was way better than the others; a great teacher who is proficient in anything I ask him about.”
- Chris B.
I teach Rock/Pop, Blues, Jazz, Folk, Liturgical, Theory, Songwriting...even Metal!
“You taught me more about guitar in 3 short months than I learned by looking through countless guitar books. You have a gift for quantifying a consistent methodology with out approaching it arrogantly or as if it's “the only way” It's a joy to learn from you.”
- Larry G.
From Jazz soloing to finger picking, learning the fretboard to learning to shred, or simply getting started on the right foot (a specialty of mine), I can give you the tools you need to take guitar as far as you want to go, and make sure you are going in the direction YOU want to go in.
"One thing I like about Steve is that he rolls with you; whichever musical direction interests you."
- R.W.
If this sounds like what you might be looking for, respond to this ad, or call me at (512)963-3285.
“He's got tons of experience, the lessons are fun, and it's a bargain. What more do you want?”
- Chris B.
Lessons are $20.00 for a half-hour, and $30.00 for an hour.
I am located in South Austin, just West of I35, and 10 minutes South of Downtown.
I'd love to hear from you!
“The best money I ever spent!”

Change and Motion: Calculus Made Clear
24 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture)
Taught by Michael Starbird
The University of Texas at Austin
Ph.D., University of Wisconsin at Madison
"Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty ... such as only the greatest art can show."
—Bertrand Russell
Why Understand Calculus?
One of the greatest achievements of the human mind is calculus. It justly deserves a place in the pantheon of our accomplishments with Shakespeare's plays, Beethoven's symphonies, and Einstein's theory of relativity.
In fact, most of the differences in the way we experience life now and the way we experienced it at the beginning of the 17th century emerged because of technical advances that rely on calculus. Calculus is a beautiful idea exposing the rational workings of the world; it is part of our intellectual heritage.
The True Genius of Calculus Is Simple
Calculus, separately invented by Newton and Leibniz, is one of the most fruitful strategies for analyzing our world ever devised. Calculus has made it possible to build bridges that span miles of river, travel to the moon, and predict patterns of population change.
Yet for all its computational power, calculus is the exploration of just two ideas—the derivative and the integral—both of which arise from a commonsense analysis of motion. All a 1,300-page calculus textbook holds, Professor Michael Starbird asserts, are those two basic ideas and 1,298 pages of examples, variations, and applications.
Many of us exclude ourselves from the profound insights of calculus because we didn't continue in mathematics. This great achievement remains a closed door. But Professor Starbird can open that door and make calculus accessible to all.
Why You Didn't Get It the First Time
Professor Starbird is committed to correcting the bewildering way that the beauty of calculus was hidden from many of us in school.
He firmly believes that calculus does not require a complicated vocabulary or notation to understand it. Indeed, the purpose of these lectures is to explain clearly the concepts of calculus and to help you see that "calculus is a crowning intellectual achievement of humanity that all intelligent people can appreciate, enjoy, and understand."
He adds: "The deep concepts of calculus can be understood without the technical background traditionally required in calculus courses. Indeed, frequently the technicalities in calculus courses completely submerge the striking, salient insights that compose the true significance of the subject.
"In this course, the concepts and insights at the heart of calculus take center stage. The central ideas are absolutely meaningful and understandable to all intelligent people—regardless of the level or age of their previous mathematical experience. Historical events and everyday action form the foundation for this excursion through calculus."
Two Simple Ideas
After the introduction, the course begins with a discussion of a car driving down a road. As Professor Starbird discusses speed and position, the two foundational concepts of calculus arise naturally, and their relationship to each other becomes clear and convincing.
Professor Starbird presents and explores the fundamental ideas, then shows how they can be understood and applied in many settings.
Expanding the Insight
Calculus originated in our desire to understand motion, which is change in position over time. Professor Starbird then explains how calculus has created powerful insight into everything that changes over time. Thus, the fundamental insight of calculus unites the way we see economics, astronomy, population growth, engineering, and even baseball. Calculus is the mathematical structure that lies at the core of a world of seemingly unrelated issues.
As you follow the intellectual development of calculus, your appreciation of its inner workings will deepen, and your skill in seeing how calculus can solve problems will increase. You will examine the relationships between algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. You will graduate from considering the linear motion of a car on a straight road to motion on a two-dimensional plane or even the motion of a flying object in three-dimensional space.
Designed for Nonmathematicians
Every step is in English rather than "mathese." Formulas are important, certainly, but the course takes the approach that every equation is in fact also a sentence that can be understood, and solved, in English.
This course is crafted to make the key concepts and triumphs of calculus accessible to nonmathematicians. It requires only a basic acquaintance with beginning high-school level algebra and geometry. This series is not designed as a college calculus course; rather, it will help you see calculus around you in the everyday world.

Austin MCAT Tutor (Austin)
If you are having trouble earning a high score on the MCAT, I can help you to increase your understanding of the material, reduce your study time, and raise your score.
I focus primarily on the physical sciences section of the exam (inorganic chemistry and physics). In addition, I have a dynamic colleague who works with my students on the verbal and writing components of the exam. Together, we provide students with a power edge over the competition.
I have taught physics and chemistry for over a decade. I began teaching for five years as a Massachusetts certified science teacher and I had outstanding results with my students. I feel that my empathy, patience, and love of teaching were largely responsible for my students’ success. For the last 5 years, I have been providing the same exceptional teaching privately as a physics and chemistry tutor and an MCAT tutor. My private students have enjoyed top-of-their-class grades, enhanced math and science skills, and greatly improved MCAT scores. My colleague has a master’s degree in English and has dramatically raised the verbal scores of MCAT students all over the world.
The tutoring is highly structured, systematic, and strategic. I realize that every student is unique and has different abilities that impact their learning and I tailor my strategy and delivery to the individual needs of each student. Together, we will cover all of the topics that are necessary for you to master the test.
I will look forward to talking with you. Please email me and we can set up a complimentary consultation to further discuss your needs.

Saxophone Lessons In Your Home (Austin)
My name is Owen Summers and I am currently accepting saxophone students of all ages. I have experience in jazz, classical, and popular styles and try to work with my students to reach their individual desires and goals as a musician. I emphasize the fundamental aspects of playing the saxophone and basic musicianship, but do not believe in a "one size fits all" solution. All instruction is tailored to the individual student's needs.
I teach in home lessons, giving my students greater flexibility and less hassle in the process. My rates are $25/30 minutes, $35/45 minutes, and $45/hour for in home study. If you would prefer, I also teach out of my home in North Austin (near Howard and I-35.)

My name is Owen Summers and I am currently accepting piano students of all ages. I have experience in jazz, classical, and popular styles and try to work with my students to reach their individual desires and goals as a musician. I emphasize the fundamental aspects of playing the piano and basic musicianship, but do not believe in a "one size fits all" solution. All instruction is tailored to the individual student's needs.
My websites are saxophone based, so I think it is appropriate to list my piano background here. (If you are interested anyway, please see www.landfallensemble.com.) My piano studies include 7 years study with Gwen Stevens, a former faculty member at Vassar College and student of Nadia Boulanger, Adele Marcus, Eduard Steueurmann, and others. I have also studied chamber music with the Daedalus Quartet and participated in brief study or masterclasses with musicians like Jeremy Denk, Tanya Bannister, Alpin Hong, and others. I was on the faculty of the Outer Banks Piano Camp in 2005 and 2006, where I taught small group lessons focused on fundamental aspects of piano technique and basic musicianship.I later studied jazz with Tim Price and Steve Blum in the New York metro area, also gaining on the bandstand training in jazz and popular music. I moved to Austin in September, 2007 and have performed around the Central Texas region in a variety of genres. I currently co-lead The Landfall Ensemble, a jazz quartet. (http://www.landfallensemble.com/live/)
I teach in home lessons in the greater Austin area. My rates are $25/half hour, $35/45 minutes, and $45/hour for in home study. Hour lessons can be split between multiple students.

Preparing for a math final? At any level (Austin area)
In preparing for a math final, for highschool the final is the same weight as a six-weeks grade! In college, the final is about 1/3 to 1/4 of the overall grade!! I can help!! Start right away, as it is never too early to review for a final. Some good study habits include reviewing tests, quizzes, homeworks, notes. The more in-depth the review the better. No need to wait for the official review, although that is important, once it is released.
Having taught highschool math in Austin Independent School District for 27 years and middle school math in Lubbock Independent School District for two years previous to that, I enjoy helping students learn math. Tutoring math for the same number of years has brought results for students from these schools: McCallum, Austin, Anderson, Bowie, Lanier, Crockett, St. Andrews, St. Stephens, Eanes Elementary and all Westlake middle schools. Students from the University of Texas, Austin Community College , Texas State as well as St. Ed's have also received help with class work as well as standardized tests. .
The subjects I have the most experience teaching are algebra and geometry. The subjects I have the most experience tutoring are second-year algebra and geometry. Pre--calculus, pre-algebra, and elementary math are other subjects I have tutored. I have experience with AP and pre-AP as well as regular math tutoring. With diligence and a regular schedule, it is common for students to bring up their average 20 or more points.
Whether help is needed with homework, quiz or test prep, mastering concepts, or working ahead to make new material easy, I welcome the opportunity to help. After helping some students pass the math TAKS, I have an individualized approach and new curriculum. ASVAB, (math) SAT, and CLEP are other tests I have helped prepare students to take. Also qualified to tutor for the ExCET math test for teachers.
My name is Lydia Miller, and my phone number is 663-6525. My rate is $45 per hour at my residence in central Austin and $10 - $17 more for the first hour of a session at another location depending on distance.

DRUM LESSONS - Learn To Play The Music You Love! (Austin)
Learn your favorite songs right away! Emphasis is on playing, NOT talking your ear off. I'll be accompanying you on piano so you get used to how to "play in a band." It's a lot of fun AND hones your ability to listen and keep steady time while rockin' out with other musicians...
Hi! I'm Pedro Horta and my focus is to help you achieve your goals on the drums.
I have students from all ages and levels, including children with learning disabilities. I have a B.A. in Music from Amherst College, MA, and over 10 years teaching experience...
With each individual student, I offer exercises, songs and techniques to practice that will help you begin seeing positive results immediately. I truly believe that anyone can play the drums and take their next step in music. It makes a big difference when you have the right teacher to help you unlock the music you love. Most people who have attained any proficiency on the drums always had someone who took the time to guide them along their way. Much of what is thought of as difficult to play or understand in music is only mysterious until it is explained and practiced... In addition to learning by ear, all my students learn how to read and eventually write out their own drum compositions. In fact, I guarantee that you'll be groovin' AND sight reading by the end of the first lesson.
Learn to play the music you Love!
TRIAL 30-MIN LESSON ONLY $25! Standard package of 4 lessons at $50/hour or $30/half-hour, or save up to 25% if you buy a package of 12... QUESTIONS? Please call me at (414) 510-5123 or email me at phorta@austin.rr.com for more info.

Austin Physics Tutor | Austin Chemistry Tutor (Austin)
If you are having trouble with PHYSICS or CHEMISTRY, I can help you to increase your understanding of the material, increase your enjoyment of the subject, lower your study time, and raise your grade.
I have taught physics and chemistry for over a decade. I began teaching for five years as a Massachusetts certified science teacher and I had outstanding results with my students. I feel that my empathy, patience, and love of teaching were largely responsible for my students’ success. For the last 5 years, I have been providing the same exceptional teaching privately as a physics and chemistry tutor. My private students have enjoyed top-of-their-class grades, enhanced math and science skills, and sharpened scientific study skills that will follow them in future courses.
My tutoring is highly structured, systematic, and strategic. I realize that every student is unique and has different abilities that impact their learning and I tailor my strategy and delivery to the individual needs of each student. I am very comfortable working with students who may have learning disabilities or are struggling with the material, and I am also very comfortable working with advanced students wishing to earn the highest possible grade.
I will look forward to talking with you. Please email me and we can set up a complimentary consultation to further discuss your needs.

Piano Lessons! 1st lessons free! 30/hr; 20 half hr.All Styles (South Austin)
Hello,
My name is Blake. I'm a gigging jazz and rock keyboardist, and a teacher of piano for several years now. I know theory inside and out, and have the chops to show you how to play the keyboard very well. I always make sure to teach what the student wants to learn, and will work with you to achieve your musical goals. I'm not here to indoctrinate you with a specific teaching method. I'm here to help you play piano the way you want to play. Why pay almost $50-60/hr for lessons from others when I can teach you all the same things for almost half as much? And my rate of 30/hr is lowered for month or season long commitments.
Also, for the parents out there, I am very good with kids. I have worked as a camp counselor, a baby sitter, as a Big for the BigBrothersBigSisters program, and of course, taught children piano. I love working with kids, and know I can give your child a great introduction to the wonderful world of music.
So please, if you want to learn piano; give me the opportunity to teach you, and I know you'll get something out of it.
First lesson is free to see if you like it. If you dig it, then hopefully you'll make a month or season long commitment and be able to get a great rate.
Thanks,
Blake

In each tutoring session, you will learn how to effectively solve problems by learning new skills, strategies, and tips.
My qualifications include: a PhD from UT, a teaching award, a perfect GPA, a double major in math and physics. I have 7 years of experience in teaching at the college level and 10 years of experience in tutoring middle school, high school, and college students, in both math and physics.
Rates start at $30/hr and depend on the specific location and the number of hours of tutoring per week. I offer special rates for group tutoring.

Austin MCAT Tutoring (Austin)
I provide private tutoring for students having trouble with the MCAT. I will help you to master the material, lower your stress and study time, and most importantly, I will help you to improve your score.
I have been teaching these subjects pertinent to the MCAT for over ten years and I have helped literally hundreds of students to increase their MCAT scores. Many of my students have expressed to me that they understand physics and chemistry (and a bunch of supporting math and science) for the first time ever and that they wished that they had begun working with me sooner. I am kind, professional, articulate, and I will work very hard to ensure your success.
The MCAT is a challenging test, but just like anything else with the proper guidance and some hard work, the test is beatable.
Please email me and we can discuss your needs and goals in more detail.

How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. Aristotle: Moral excellence comes about as a result of habit. We become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts. Arnold Toynbee:
Apathy can be overcome by enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can only be aroused by two things: first, an ideal, with takes the imagination by storm, and second, a definite intelligible plan for carrying that ideal into practice. Barack Obama: The true test of the American ideal is whether we're able to recognize our failings and
then rise together to meet the challenges of our time. Whether we allow ourselves to be shaped by events and history, or whether we act to shape them. Barack Obama: If you're walking down the right path and you're willing to keep walking, eventually you'll make progress. Benjamin Disraeli: Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.

Words from one of my student Mr. David Reynolds who just took his test recently!
“Your class certainly helped, 4-5 questions on the real test were almost straight out of our class and I think you touched base on everything they asked which is tough because I hear they change it around pretty often! I do not think I would have gotten them correct as fast as I did, if it wasn't for your class. Our work together was reflected in my final score.
You have done a great job on the Course Structure & Topics that were covered.
Thank You!"

CNA training begins Nov 30th (Austin)
Are you wanting to make a difference?
If you want to be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the State of Texas, you must do two things:
1. Take the state certification exam through Prometric. There are 2 parts to the exam; written and clinical. You must pass both parts to pass the entire exam. For more information about the exam, you can go to Prometric’s web site: www.prometric.com.
2. Pass a background check. The background check is done as part of the application for the state exam. You don’t have to do anything except answer the questions truthfully.
Sounds simple, doesn’t it? If you know how to successfully answer 60 written questions, and perform 22 different skills, you are ready to challenge the exam. If you are not ready to take the exam or just want to feel more comfortable, you may want to consider one of our classes.
Express Training Services is now offering CNA classes in Austin!
The class consists of 75 hours broken down into 51 hours of classroom instruction and 24 hours of hands-on instruction at a local nursing home.
