Blacks First Law Dictionary 1891 Original Leather Bound FIRST EDITION (obo) $2100
Rare Blacks Law Dictionary, First edition. I have been told that there were only 500 of these produced when they first came out, which makes sense when you consider its 1891, so they didn't produce things in mass quantities like they do today, and the fact that it was the first version of an unknown book, so who knew how well it would actually sell? Obviously, it has done quite well through the last 118 years, going through 8 additional volumes to todays present 9th edition. Sadly, many of the original definitions and meanings have been modified or even removed entirely from the original, making this an invaluable source for lawyers, geneologists, wordsmiths and historians alike.
I've had four copies of the First Edition over the last 20 years. (I am currently negotiating the purchase of another copy, in lesser condition than this one listed here. Inquire if interested). This is by far the best copy I have ever owned, and is likely to be in the top 10% of all copies still exisitng, it really is that good. At a minimum I would rate it as Very Good. The interior is rather nice, with no ripped pages or writing noted as I flipped through it multiple times. I did find a bunch (15-20) pages that had some lightly dog eared corner bends, so I straightened them out again. That would be the very corners of the pages that were folded, not the entire page or anything large. So, like 1/8" width by 1" high roughly. Just smaller folds and on the edges, nothing that affects any text. The front end page, title page and the next two pages do have a crease through them where the entire page got lightly creased (see the photos in the links provided). There's a prior owners name penciled on the inside of the front cover, otherwise I found no marks or writing anywhere.
The spine is tight and solid, far better than any copy I've ever had. There is extremely light play at the very top of the front cover such that if you would intentionally pull just the very top of the cover outwards, you MIGHT be able to slip a playing card in between the spine and the binding. This is the only area where one might say the front binding is cracked. The paper overlay they add between the cover and the actual binding mesh is cracked at points; the paper only, NOT the binding. Regardless of the semantics, the binding is rock solid front and back.
