Anatomy of a Dryer Fire
Dryer fires usually start beneath the dryer when the motor overheats. Overheating is
caused by a build-up of lint in the duct that increases the drying time and blocks the flow
of air. Naturally, any lint that has collected under the dryer will burn and the draft from
the dryer will pull that fire up into the duct. Since the duct may be coated or even blocked
with lint, many times a house fire results. Other contributing conditions may include
failure of the thermostat and limit switches in the dryer, lint inside the dryer, a missing or
damaged lint screen, a crushed hose behind the dryer, or a bird·s nest or other debris
blocking the vent.

Statistics and Implications
- Dryer exhaust fires now surpass creosote (chimney) fires in frequency on a national
level. In 1998, the most recent statistics available, the Consumer Product Safety
Commission reports that over 15,600 dryer fires occurred killing 20 people, injuring 370
more and causing over $75.4 million in property damage. According to the CPSC, in most
of these cases the culprit was lint getting into the machine·s heating element, sparking and
fueling a fire. Not surprisingly, some fire departments and insurance companies now
require that dryer vents be inspected and cleaned regularly.
- With gas dryers, there is also concern of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Since lint
and flue gases use the same avenue of exit from the house, a blocked vent can cause CO
fumes to back up into the house. These fumes are colorless and odorless and they can be
fatal. Low-level CO poisoning mimics flu symptoms (without the fever): headache,
weakness, nausea, disorientation and deep fatigue. At higher levels, occupants can fall
asleep, lapse into a coma and die.
Warning Signs
- Dryer is still producing airflow, no heat. It takes longer and longer to dry clothes,
especially towels and jeans or any other article of clothing.
- Clothes are damp or hotter than usual at the end of the cycle.
- Outdoor flapper on vent hood doesn't open when dryer is on.
- Airflow in the vent seems low.

Gutter Filter Installation

Gutter cleaning is one of those areas, that you have almost no control whatsoever. It can’t be seen from the ground and there is no warranty given on the service performed. Even properly cleaned, they are going to clog anyway, because this is the way they work. You have them all around the house, collecting rainwater and diverting it from foundation of your house, but unfortunately they collect debris as well. And most of you have nothing to prevent it from happening. All you have is some strainers (similar to the picture below) that cover the down hole, filtering water from debris. If you think about it, you have 4, sometime 6, sometime 8 small strainers (filters), about 4 sq inches each, so for every 100 feet of gutters you have 16 – 20 sq inches of filtering device. What do you think, how effective is that? What if I tell you, that Gutter Filter can turn the whole length of your gutters into filtering device? Instead of 20 sq inches of filter you will have 6000 sq inches of filter for every 100 feet of the gutters. (Example given for 5” attached gutter, 100 feet * 12 inches = 1200 inches * 5 inches wide) What do you think, would it be more effective?

With GutterStuff Gutter Filter hitting the Costco, probably a lot of you liked the idea, but reluctant to climb up the roof and do the installation yourself. I have a lot of experience with this Gutter Filter and will be happy to install it for you. I have done it million times and know all the pro's and con's of that product, and that is a great product indeed, truly capable of changing the maintenance of your property. I am fairly new to Bellingham and left a successful Doula practice in Seattle. I am certified both as a postpartum doula and as a lactation educator. I am available Monday Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for in home newborn/postpartum support. A postpartum doula's job varies to meet each clients needs, my goal is to nurture and empower new and growing families, sometimes that means helping with difficulty breastfeeding, learning coping skills for crying and sleep issues, identifying when mama or baby needs a doctor, and what is normal (ie postpartum bleeding, newborn jaundice, postpartum mood disorders) and often simply offering mama a nap, doing some light housekeeping and providing nourishing meals for your family. My rates are reasonable and I offer a sliding scale. I can offer one time visits or ongoing care for several weeks. Visits are typically 2-3hrs and approximately $18-20hr depending on your location, with exceptions for lower income families. I am happy to provide excellent references.
