I have recently moved to Blaine from Colorado, where I taught private piano lessons for six years. I have my BA in music, as well as a teacher's license with elementary endorsements. I am currently teaching music part time in a private school setting.
I tailor my teaching methods to suit each of my student's interests, personality, and learning style. My own training has been primarily classical, and this is my primary emphasis in teaching. I had a wonderful experience learning to play the piano, and I desire to pass on a love of music to all my students, whether or not they wish to play piano long-term.
I have taught students in grades 1-9, and I will accept all ages. However, due to my emphasis on reading and understanding written music, I prefer that students be able to read at a second-grade level before starting lessons.

Guitar Lessons From Major Label Musician (Bellingham)
I am a local musician who has done several national and UK tours alongside acts like The Smashing Pumpkins, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Built To Spill, Team Sleep, Plus 44, and others. The last major tour I was on was the 2008 Taste Of Chaos tour, which was an arena tour featuring Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu. I have worked several times in the studio with multi-platinum record producer Ross Robinson, as well as Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker from Blink-182 and Plus 44, Chino Moreno from Deftones and Team Sleep, Chris Pennie from Dillinger Escape Plan and Coheed And Cambria, and Wes Borland from Limp Bizkit and Black Light Burns. I am currently in the band Idiot Pilot and have released two major label albums on Warner Brothers Records; currently recording the third. (One-on-One Tutoring vs Classroom Learning)
I've come to believe, over 15 years of experience in education in Berkeley and the Bay Area in general, that one-on-one tutoring is a much more relaxed and effective way to learn than classroom instruction. Over my 15 years of experience as a tutor, I've found that a lot of students decide they can't succeed in a class when it's really just that:
the pace is too fast
the teaching style doesn't suit them
they don't have a context for the material that makes sense to them
they can't get their questions answered or
they feel too self-conscious and anxious in the classroom to focus on learning
The most important thing I do as a tutor, may be to set a relaxed tone in which students feel free to be themselves, make mistakes, ask questions and therefore learn! I do this by having a sense of humor, being authentic, listening and generally just being my charming self. (There's a little sample of the humor for you, free of charge!)
From that as a starting point, I can then:
Exactly tailor my explanation for that student
Go at the student's individual pace, as slow—or as fast—as needed
Place the material in the big picture, allowing the student to make sense of it and answer the question "Why am I learning this?"
Answer all the student's questions.
Approaching a topic this way can be vital to a student's self-confidence, attitude towards a subject, and grades. Tutoring is so much more effective than classroom learning.
