Assistant Director, Membership Programs & Marketing (Western Washington University)

About the Position: The Western Alumni Office is expanding its team to include an Assistant Director, Membership Programs & Marketing to direct the Alumni membership programs, which will result in increased enrollments, retention, and awareness of and participation in the Alumni Association. This position will develop strategies to accomplish these goals by managing:

    An integrated and comprehensive written communications plan designed to increase awareness of and participation in the Western Alumni Association and Western Washington University
    The Western Alumni Association’s membership program which will result in increased Alumni Association enrollments and revenue
    The membership services program including member benefits and affinity offerings which result in increased annual and life member enrollments as well as member retention


The Assistant Director serves as part of the department strategic management team and a resource to the Executive Director of the Western Alumni Association by researching, evaluating and recommending membership, and written communication strategies to align with the Alumni Association office goals and mission. This position is an integral part of the office stability and sustained growth of the department and regularly exercises independent judgment and discretion.

The Assistant Director works collaboratively with Alumni Association colleagues and reports to the Executive Director, Western Alumni Association. This position is a full-time, 12-month, FLSA exempt with an excellent benefits package, including over 4 weeks of vacation.

About the Department: The Western Alumni Association builds strong Western communities through caring and enduring relationships that make a difference. The Western Alumni Association staff members provide broad-based programming for alumni, students and University supporters to create life-long relationships that strengthen Western. The Alumni Association is in the Advancement Division and is a 501(3)c organization with a volunteer board.

Position Responsibilities:

    Develop, manage, oversee and direct a comprehensive written communications program
    Develop and write copy for print, electronic, and web-based needs including invitations, e-mail blasts, eNewsletters, website, advertisements, the alumni magazine, event collateral, brochures and the annual report
    Budget development and oversight responsibilities
    Develop, direct and oversee a comprehensive membership acquisition and renewal program to grow the annual and life Alumni Association membership enrollment
    Identify most effective strategies for directing a robust and growing membership acquisition and renewal program through print, web, electronic, phone and on/off campus events
    Coordinate with University Advancement and WWU Foundation staff to schedule and execute a membership plan in order to successfully solicit mutual audiences Evaluate, forecast, track and enhance current membership services


Required Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s degree
    3-5 years progressive experience in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, membership acquisition processes and/or donor acquisition program or related experience
    Demonstrated experience in development of communications program including electronic newsletters, website and invitations
    Demonstrated strong written, grammatical and editing skills
    Strong oral and interpersonal communication skills, including ability to work as part of a collaborative, dynamic and supportive team in a new and expanding office with high work standards
    Demonstrated strong project management and organizational skills, including ability to set priorities, manage simultaneous projects, develop and oversee budgets, and complete projects on time
    Proficient in Microsoft Office


Preferred Qualifications:

    Master’s degree
    Prior experience in higher education, working with Alumni, Foundation, and/or student customer service, using a variety of communication vehicles to deliver customized information
    Working knowledge of Harris Connect or other online data and membership solutions
    Demonstrated knowledge of membership acquisition processes – audience segmentation; solicitation vehicles and strategies; tracking methods and analysis
    Demonstrated knowledge of marketing processes - brand recognition/awareness, marketing segmentation and targeting, advertising and promotion, research
    Demonstrated ability to take initiative, maintain confidentiality, work independently, and supervise staff
    Willing to travel and work occasional nights and weekends
