A historically significant ranch approximately 16 miles from town. The 10 mile ridge directly behind us in the Mendocino National Forest was named after our ranch. It's more than historic though. The property can suit multiple purposes, or even income if you so desire.
When you take off into the Mountains from Northern California's largest natural lake called Clear Lake, you leave civilization behind. No phones, no people, no traffic, no madness. This display is of the original settlers, the cabin and the whole area taken long long ago. Similar copies are found at the local museum in honor of the area. The main cabin has an attic for the possibility of extra bedrooms. The structure is unusually well preserved and sits in a huge 40+ acre meadow flat where two creeks come together right in the front. There's some 250 to 300+ acres of flat to gentle slope land in all.
No worrys about flooding. All of the old buildings rest high above the creek.
Right next to camp is one of the largest old oak trees in the entire region and maybe the entire county too.
To add to the rustic outdoor backwoods feel, a spacious wrap around screened porch allows you to survey the valley rain or shine. Sleep inside the master bedroom or sleep outside too. The outdoor porch is pleasantly decorated with native deer horns, iron spring beds, outdoor sink, and dining table. The joy of sleeping protected and cozy in the night time air, is what its all about for the nature goers and animal lovers who want to catch a glimpse of a big bear strolling through camp at night occasionally. The porch is so big, you can stack 2 cords of firewood off to 1/3 of the wall and hardly notice it there.
Inside this old lodge like cabin, there's two wood stoves for warm crackly open door fires. One in living room and one in the kitchen. The bathroom is equally impressive with a separate walk-in shower, tub, antique dresser/vanity and sink with an old cowboy mirror. There's high ceilings and plenty of seating everywhere. Plenty of beds inside as well as outside for clubs, gatherings, or large extended families.
The bunkhouse sits less than 100 feet away for overflow family, guests, or for who ever. Similar by design of the main cabin, it too has a wrap around porch, a special screened sleeping bedroom, a sunken master bedroom with brick floor and fireplace, original rustic hardwood floors throughout. The walls and ceilings are beautiful stained wood . You would have to see to believe the look. The bunk house bath has a copper shower, antique style fixtures, and one of the most unique push button toilets hardly ever seen today. The toilet is beautifully checker cracked with age but reconditioned to work like a new one. Two sets of wood french doors can open up the entire bunkhouse for company and conversation across every room. The living room and kitchen combination has an iron pot rack hanging from the ceiling, copper counter tops, an antique china basin checkered with cracks but doesn't leak. The wood stove is a 1920 Montgomery Wards with a mika glass door to see the fire which has been reconditioned too. All of these unique furnishings are little conversation pieces by themselves. Lots of wavy glass windows which match french doors that withstood the test of time.
The barn (partial ground floor and partial wood floor) is large enough for storing your Indiana Jones Jeep too. Even enough room for extra things such as a tractor, boat, quads, horses and more. Right now it's used for just storage of old lumber and things belonging to the historic ranch.
Both living quarters make life convenient and enjoyable off the grid with propane lighting, propane hot water heaters, New metal roofing, matching redwood extereriors. Both cabins were recently upgraded with an already successful natural gravity flow spring. At the spring site, there are two new twin 1500 gal. holding tanks. Spring is high enough above to make water pressure not an issue. The water tastes excellent. The tried and proven spring is boxed and concreted in with a secure metal door sealed and bolted down. It's never gone dry through our entire ownership which has extended 11 years in the family. There are two concrete 1,200 gallon septics for each home that has been recently serviced. They never gave us one lick of problems ever. We can open them up to show how nice they are.
It would most definitely make an excellent horse ranch, hunting guide service headquarters, vacation rental, Hunting Club, or Dude Ranch. I can assure you that if you spent enough time up there, you wouldn't want to share it with anyone its that nice. It's plain and simple. There's miles of remote wilderness that captures the mind and soul. When you get back to civilization, you'll wonder why you came back.
You don't have any of the problems typically associated with other properties elsewhere. No other landowners to cross over, no private easements to hassle with, no problems with access maintenance either. The County maintained road makes for easy access year around. They keep the roads open.
Through the years we've received two popular comments from our guests when we extend invitations for the weekend or just a holiday cook out. Most of them always say, "It's incredible" or "It's a little piece of paradise." Come and see this spread and you might agree too.
Indian Valley reservoir is just down the road for all kinds of remote bass, trout, and catfishingfishing. Boating is popular there too with practically no signs of civilization there too! Thousands of acres Mendocino National Forest surrounds the area for miles around. Serious wildlife: trophy deer, bear, turkey, bobcat, raccoons, squirrels, eagles, huge owls, hawks, fish, turtles, and much more.
The family has chosen the lizard as the totem of the ranch. We recently mounted a wood carving of the lizard as tribute to the little critters. They are so tame, they come up just to see us by the campfires once in a while. Two kinds: Alligator lizards and blue bellies. Turkeys and deer pay their visits too. They get quite close to us. Perhaps it's our scent. They eat around the old growth apple, plum, pear, and walnut trees and underneath the oak groves.
There's plenty of wild fruit and berries I can show, so you don't miss out on the season picking for yourself.
With this 400 acres, we have literally thousands of acres of Government land locked up behind the ranch which is practically inaccessible without any trails or roads. We didn't fix it that way. That's just the way it is. Because of this, you may get the feeling that you own thousands of acres more. In a relatively short distance beyond the ranch, the elevation climbs fast to around 4,000 feet on the Ridge tops. It makes for some very interesting weather there.
The property is a thrill to go to when the creek is rushing in the winter believe it or not. You can cross with your car or SUV in the safe shallow area for just enough excitement roughing it without any real danger. It's easy even in two wheel drive or car. For the first time guests, it's fun to watch them. For them, it's a true expedition style vacation roughing it and 4 wheeling usually like nothing they'd ever been on. Some vacations are advertised for $7,000 to $10,000 per week just to match it in sports magazines. Lets not forget the Indiana Jones walking cable bridge that stretches across the rocky part of the creek too.
The fall, spring and winter is our favorite time of the year. Sometimes, our family will anticipate the coming of a storm and rush up to spend the night and enjoy the pattering of the rain and wind. The property is one of a kind and one huge piece that extends about one mile of County road frontage. It's never been broken up or subdivided. It could possibly be subdivided but it never crossed our minds. To split it up would be a shame and it would break our hearts. That's why we never did.
