95 Honda Civic (Afton) $650

1995 Honda Civic DX with 249,000 miles and still going strong! Smokes and burns oil but still gets 35 mpg. It's 5speed and was my daily driver until last week when I put my truck on the road. I drove this car over 700 miles a week for the last 6 months without a problem and would keep doing so if I didn't need a truck for work and winter. It has a small leak in the top of the gas tank. The good: Auto trans, power EVERYTHING, moonroof, leather, class III hitch, tinted windows, starts, drives, fully loaded, 4 wheel disc brakes. Newer transmission put in about 20K ago-have receipt to verify.

The bad: Needs radiator as current one leaks at a seam. Needs front brake or general brake work..ABS and brake lights are on. Still stops without an issue. No other warning lights are on. It has some rust and some patched areas on the body typical of Fords (wheel wells, back hatch) but it's not too bad. Relatively new muffler but has a slight exhaust leak underneath. Could use new shocks and new tires. 206K. Annoying issues like locks that won't turn, hydraulic holder for the hood won't stay up, interior lights won't switch off, driver door handle loose could use replacement, and some other minor things.

I've listed every little thing I could think of just to be clear ahead of time-overall this would be a beast for the winter and would make a terrific 'other' car. Interior is nice, plenty of space, roof rack, etc.

-The automatic transmission is not working correctly. Initially, a seal was bad, so I dropped it, replaced the seals, put it back together, and it wouldn't shift into reverse. Finally got it to go into reverse, but then it wouldn't upshift. Currently, the transmission goes forward in each gear, and stays in 1st gear, so its' max speed is around 25MPH right now.
-Front brakes need to be bled, the brakes work fine right now, but they don't feel tight, bleeding the fronts should fix it.


Between school and work, I don't have any more time to invest in this car. I'd love to have it running, but I don't have time to drop the transmission again. A new (or junkyard) transmission from a '91-'94 Tercel will work, the same transmission is also available in some Corolla's and Celica's around those years. The current transmission might be fixable as well, I really don't know, and don't want to mess with it anymore.

I would recommend that it be towed, but if you're willing to drive 25MPH with no reverse, then it can be driven anywhere. In neutral with the engine off, it acts as neutral, but with the engine on, it wants to go forward in neutral.
