Staying Well After Depression Study ($50 & Free Therapy) (Binghamton University)

If you are at least 18, have suffered from depression in the past, and are not currently feeling depressed, you may be eligible to take part in a research study on Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for the prevention of depressive relapse.

What is MBCT?

MBCT is a new group therapy that combines mindfulness meditation with cognitive therapy techniques. If you have suffered from Major Depressive Disorder in the past, there is at least a 50% chance that you will become depressed again in the future. Research shows that MBCT reduces the risk of future depression in people who have suffered from several episodes of depression and works as well as anti-depressant medication for preventing depression.

What do I get if I participate?

You will be paid $50 ($25 each) for participating in two, two-hour assessment sessions during which you will fill out questionnaires and complete some computer tasks. MBCT courses typically cost over $400, but as part of the study you will get to participate in a full 9-session MBCT course for free.

Who is conducting the study?

The Laboratory of Consciousness and Cognition is conducting the research through Binghamton University’s Psychological Clinic.

Do I need to stop taking medication and/or seeing my therapist?

No.

How do I find out if I am eligible to participate in the study?

Call the Psychological Clinic at 607-777-2103 to get more information about the study and sign up to participate in a phone interview to see if you are eligible for the study and whether or not you might be likely to benefit from MBCT. Fall treatment groups are full, but we will begin screening participants for eligibility again in January. Call now to put your name on the waiting list so that we will be able to contact you asap in January.
