However, internationals aren't the issue. I'm sure the bus will be loaded with all sorts of non-residents....Internationals, students, and a like.

I couldn't agree more! Let me get this straight....Regardless of who the hell rides the bus, we're spending valuable tax dollars to ship shoppers to Christiansburg to spend money, when Blacksburg can't even come close to filling up First and main???

The recreational fields in the town suck beyond belief. The Rec Center is old as hell. The Fire Dept doesn't have enough space for all it's valuables.....But, we can spend tax dollars to ship people out of town to shop....And spend money in some other tax base. Fire these people! Could the leaders of Blacksburg be any dumber?

New BT Service to Christiansburg (Blacksburg)

I couldn't believe my eyes today as I'm reading the article in the Roanoke Times about the new BT service to Christiansburg. Our dip shit Town Mgr, Marc Verniel, or should we call him "lurch," is bragging about how great this new service is, taking people to Christiasnburg for shopping and etc.

WTF? We're using our tax dollars to at least partially fund the thing so people can go to some other locality to spend their money? And to top it all off, the prices are so frickening low, that they aren't even charging anywhere near enough to help sustain the program. 50 cents a trip? Are you serious? Even more ridiculous is the program where they come to your house and drive you anywhere in Christiansburg for $2 and $1 per stop, but no more than $5 per day....On as many stops / errands as you like. I guess the BT is now a practically free taxi service.

No wonder Blacksburg is over burdened with real estate taxes. With programs like this, what little shopping citizens do in the town, will now be even less. How much you want to bet that the majority of people who use these services won't even be property owners or full time citizens of the town, but rather people who just come to the area for the university. I'm sure bus will be full of internationals. Just about everyone of them is on the free lunch program in my kids class, so why not spend even more tax dollars on them to transport them to another locality to shop?

At the end of the day, we're using resident tax dollars to support visitors to shop elsewhere. Even if full time, tax paying residents use the bus, it's not something that we should be using our tax dollars for. We need to sweep these leaders out of office because it's very clear they have no idea what they're doing. No wonder the Christiansburg people interviewed for the article were so giddy.

Morgan Harrington (Everywhere)

Tonight at 9pm go outside and light a candle for Morgan and pray for her to come home! Her Mom and Dad need her Home for the Holidays. We all need her to come Home. Depending on weather, you could reserve a pavillion in one of the county parks. Hand-in-Hand park for example - it only cost $30 to reserve back in April when I did my daughter's bday. It's not exactly summer weather or anything but they have grills there and kids love parks.

I'm in the process of planning my 6 yr old's birthday party, and since he is in school this year he wants to invite some friends, which I am totally fine with. So armed with this info and the typical number of family that usually attends I decide to have a party elsewhere verses at home where we usually have them. Plus with so many kids I'm sure they are going to want something to do well I have found that places in the NRV are fairly expensive to have parties. The cheapest I have found to accomodate all of us is in the ballpark of $300!?!?! What the NRV needs is some kind of party place that is kid and wallet friendly. Or does anyone else have any ideas, I've tried the Adventure Center, Superbowl, and the movies.

Putting that aside, we all were taught customs and practices and will not always be in agreement. It does not necessaritly mean that a person is being disrespectful.

I think there was some misunderstanding between the OPs gripe and what everyone else said. The OP complained the people jsut stopped -- that they didn't pull over, and didn't really pay attention to the cars around them. The OP has no problem with stopping for the funeral procession.

Myself and another poster hadn't heard of stopping on divided/major highways, or when the procession is going in the oppoiste direction from you. Everyone else here seemed to support stopping for the procession no matter what.

I think you need a cop to block the intersections because it's not always obvious that it's a procession and not jsut some asshat with their lights on. So, it just makes it a little more obvious, especially in a long, drawn out procession to put cops at the intersections.

I would pull over on a smaller road (secondary), but not for a procession in the opposite lane of main street for example. If there were one in the same lane as I was, I would pull over, but that has never happened to me.

Whenever i'm browsing the for sale sections there seems to always be someone who types with the caps lock on. Also, along with all caps they usually done use punctuation. Even though its something i may be interested in, i can't bring myself to read a paragraph long sentence thats in all caps. It absolutely annoys the hell out of me.

I have to say, I agree with the OP. It's pretty dumb to stop in traffic...pretty dangerous as well. Having said that, I do pull over and wait it out...not due to any old wives tail, but due to the fact that I have a tad bit of common human decency. So...OP, you're right...stopping in traffic is not safe and if people want to show respect they SHOULD pull over / off. Do you even know where most of your superstitions originate? This has nothing to do with showing respect. It has to do with old wive's tales where people believed if you broke a funeral procession, then the spirit of the dead person will come to haunt you. There are other superstitions about funerals too. It's amazing that most Christians condemn pagan beliefs yet practice them almost daily in their lives. I was always told to pull over to the side and stop and wait for them to pass. And to never pass a funeral procession. I think its only right to show respect to the dead and to their families. It usually only takes a few minutes for them to pass. I was raised here in Va. and have seen this done in Ohio and Indiania. Think guys should take their hats off too!

I have a question? (NRV)

My question is what can I do about my Hateful neighbors? Each time I mow my lawn or just getting out of my vehcile, these people stare, curse, take pictures, Even call the POLICE!!! For example,my friend, and I were cutting down trees last weekend on my side of the boundary line, that were already dead, and looked awful, minding our own business. They came out cursing up a storm claiming we were cutting down their privacy fence. My friend remained quiet, and I polietly said "These trees are on my property, they look like crap, and I'm cutting them down." They're still cursing, started taking pictures, went inside, and I thought that was the end of it. Five minutes later a County Police Officer pulls up in my driveway, and told me to stop cutting their trees down, or I would be arrested for Tresspassing. I told him I was never on their property and showed him where my land was surveyed. He seen that I stayed on my property, and went to the neighbors house. they were yelling at the police officer, YELLING at him, and he left. I heard the male yell out "you'll be sorry." Two days ago the same officer comes to my house, and serves me 4 warrants for tresspassing, verbal assault, assault, and battery, and vandalism. How is that possible?! I try to be good to everybody, and enjoy my new home, but it's so hard with those people. Is there anyone with advice on what I can do? I'm at my whits end, and if they keep this up I will have a real warrant against me.....

I could understand stopping to let the procession pass acorss in front of you, or getting out of the way if they are in your lane, but on the other side of the road? That's alittle overboard.

OK, what the hell is it with people who stop dead in traffic and nearly cause everyone behind them to be in an accident? Yesterday I saw a brilliant person just stop dead in their lane because a funeral procession was coming the opposite direction. I'm not saying that they are wrong in their beliefs to stop out of "respect" but PULL THE HELL OFF THE ROAD!!!! There are other people nearly getting rear ended behind you that can get killed or injured just because you think you are doing the right thing. The law states that you should not "break" a funeral procession at an intersection, which is why you often see police there, but you sure as hell don't stop dead in the highway because one is traveling in the opposite direction!
Last year I saw people do it on Lee Highway which is a DIVIDED highway when there was a funeral procession across the grass median going the opposite direction. You aren't even required to stop for a school bus when there is a median, what makes you think you need to do it for a funeral?

Regarding the phone number, someone with a West Virginia, or even a California number can be living here. This is the day and age of cell phones and you can TAKE your number with you when you move. e.g. I have a 540-552-blacksburg number and I live in Fairlawn.
Second, I should think the postmaster and others would have more important problems to worry about, like how to keep the cost of stamps from rising again! The poster is correct when saying that touching, going into or delivering materials into someone else's mailbox is illegal but then again, so is littering, yet our highways still end up looking like pig pens. Laws mean nothing unless they are enforced.
All in all, most pets are part of the family and this pet may belong to a child who is heartbroken. I would just chill and turn the other cheek. After all, it isn't like tons of trash is not "legally" delivered everyday into our mailboxes that we all drop into the trash can without opening.

It's true that it is against the law for citizens to put fliers in mailboxes. Its actually punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 if you are a business and $5000 for citizens. The offender, if found guilty, could also be forced to pay the price of the postage that it would have cost to mail the fliers. The thing is it has to be proven exactly who actually inserted them into the boxes before someone is charged...and if no one saw it happen...then it didnt happen (unless you lie and claim that you witnessed it...which would not surprise me).

According to readers of the Collegiate Times, the best three apartment complexes in Blacksburg are Foxridge, The Village, and Collegiate Suites.

If you're looking for something quiet and a nice area of walking trials and scenery, Foxridge is hard to beat. If you want immediate access to parties, then you'd probably prefer The Village or Collegiate Suites.

Here's a news flash for all you waiters and waitresses out there...leaving a tip is at the discretion of the person paying the bill. Great service gest great tips, so so service gets so so tips and poor service usually results in no tip at all.

Being condescending, ignoring requests for special items, being non responsive when a request is made, and standing in the hall by the bathrooms talking on the phone while your table watches you and waits 20 minutes for their drinks will not get you a tip. At least not from me.

When I have a server that is nice, courteous, and efficient, I tip 20% or more.

40,000 Troops

From the AP: White House National Security Adviser retired Gen. Jim Jones issued a rare public statement Monday vehemently denying media reports that suggest President Obama has privately decided to send close to 40,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan.

"Reports that President Obama has made a decision about Afghanistan are absolutely false," Jones, who has a low public profile, said in a statement. "He has not received final options for his consideration, he has not reviewed those options with his national security team, and he has not made any decisions about resources. Any reports to the contrary are completely untrue and come from uninformed sources."

Realistic estimates say the decision is going to come closer to January.

Tire repair (The burgs)

Now I know this topic has already hit CL in the past few weeks but, today I found myself in need of a new valve stem for a tire that went flat on Sunday. I took the tire off the car last night and took it to work in my Co. vehicle. This morning I called Firestone tire, told them I needed a new valve stem and the tire was off the vehicle, $20.00 for a flat repair is what I was quoted. Wimmer tire ( across from Corning ) was my next call and I was quoted $5.00 for the same work, no brainer here. Upon taking the tire to Whimmer, a new valve stem was installed, tire was filled with air and placed in my vehicle in 5 minutes, thats right 5 minutes! These guys rock! Good local folks who are out to make a living, not a killing. I would highly reccomend this place.

The Southgate entrance is HORRIBLE around 5:00. There are always cars backed up on the west-bound side. It's a dangerous situation because people aren't paying attention to the stopped traffic, especially before you get to the warning signs and lights. I was nearly in a horrible accident there a few weeks ago, before I got to those signs btw. Let's just say seeing a tractor trailer truck barreling at you while you are completely stopped is not exactly a feel-good moment.

You're right that a pedestrian has the right of way over a motor vheicle at a crosswalk but even the state of VA allowed for some common sense in this law. The pedestrian does not "always" have the right of way. In that code section it also reads "No pedestrian shall enter or cross an intersection in disregard of approaching traffic". Which means if you step out into the path of a car that is right at the crosswalk, not only will you get hurt, but you very likely will have to pay the cost of the vehicle repair as well! Simply because it was you, the pedestrain that caused the crash, not the driver.

What's with all the students who cross the street WITHOUT LOOKING AT ONCOMING TRAFFIC? Yes, I know pedestrians have the right-of-way in a crosswalk. But I'm talking about using a little common sense and making sure that you make eye contact with the driver and that you are sure that they see you. Drivers today can be distracted by many things or may not see someone with dark clothing on at nighttime.

I have seen this happen several times this semester in front of RU. I have seen several students just walk out and NEVER turn their head to look and see that they don't get run over. Understand that in no way am I saying that the driver doesn't have a duty and responsibility to stop for a pedestrian but I am saying that there is a bit of intelligence needed on part of these students. Surely they were taught to look both ways before crossing a street? I truly believe that a three ton vehicle, even going 25 mph, can seriously hurt or kill you.

Any method will do really...if the tip is more than $10-15 it might be a good idea to give it too her/him, just because some restaurants have issues with theft. Generally though, if you leave it on the table (in an obviously place), or in the checkbook, or tell them to keep the change it works well. No one really cares how you do it as long as they get paid. Thanks for being proactive about your tipping practices! Coming from a former server we really appreciate it. :)
