Hi everyone,

About 25 years ago I found a cassette entitled BREAKFAST IN THE FIELD by Micheal Hedges and became an immediate fan. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. You would swear there were at least two guitarists playing on some of the songs. I was lucky enough ot see him in concert 5 times before his tragic death in 1997. I began learning his songs right away and am proud to say I can play 10 of his songs including LAYOVER, ELEVEN SMALL ROACHES, BREAKFAST IN THE FIELD, TWO DAYS OLD, PEG LEG SPEED KING, THE UNEXPECTED VISITOR, RICKOVER'S DREAM and BENSUSAN. I even bought a harp guitar (pictured) so I could learn BECAUSE IT'S THERE and THE DOUBLE PLANET.

I'm offering to teach anyone who wants to learn the Hedges' Technique. Lessons are 20 dollars an hour in my home and 30 dollars in your home.

I've been performing at some of the open mics around town and am currently playing at Liquid Lounge on Tuesday nights.

Are you a woman, age 8 to 88, who loves singing the standards? Is your inner diva itching to get on stage? Do you have lots of energy to channel into regular weekly rehearsals? Would you like to work with a talented, knowledgeable director with high standards? Then check out Syringa Sound Chorus in Meridian. We rehearse Thursday nights 6:30 – 8:30 at Meadowlake Village Retirement Center (behind St. Luke’s) in the second-floor chapel. Ability to read music helpful but not required.

Re: Questions about mastering

The most common mistakes are... Over EQ to the final mix and even worse, over compression to final mix. It's best to leave this to the engineer as these 2 things can not be easily fixed or reversed. Also, another common mistake is dithering it to 16bit (for CD) from 24bit prior to mastering. You ALWAYS want to deliver the highest resolution possible to the engineer. Leave it alone, if you are unsure of what you are doing, and explain to the mastering engineer with examples of what you would like it to sound like (brighter, punchier, louder, more dynamic, etc). Similar band examples are helpful too.

Also, to further complicate things... these days many artists do completly different mastering for MP3 and for myspace/snocap compression.

Hope this helps! The places in town I would recommend are Tonic Room or AudioLab. But really, I probably wouldn't have anyone in town do it if it was really critical though. For most local bands they do a fine job. Many pro engineers all work through ftp these days (send files back and forth) and are actually pretty reasonably priced. BEWARE of people claiming to be mastering engineers! There are thousands of them. It takes a specially designed, acoustically treated room, thousands in gear investment and years of study with a pro either hands on in studio, or school. Just check credentials first.

Questions about mastering.... (Nampa)

Hello everyone!

I would like to record a few songs and have them professionaly mastered. I have heared that mastering is best accomplished with a song that has been properly mixed down. Can any of you pros out there give me the basic guidlines for a proper mixdown, at least as far as it applys to mastering. What are the common mistakes in mixdown? What do I want to avoid? What do I want to shoot for?
Also, could anyone give me a price estimate per song?

Drummer geek who loves all styles, loves all approaches, loves anything to do with drumming and music. I'll play anything from Irish folk metal to polka slam-dance. Hell, if I'm feeling frisky, I just might find a way to combine the two, if it can be done without hurting too many innocents. Maybe some Free Bird would be easier? Maybe not. Cellist looking for a teacher (Boise, ID)

I have been playing cello for 9 years now. I have developed severe tendonitis in my left wrist, as well as some minor juvenile arthritis at the end of my junior year in high school from over-practicing for competitions.
I took this past year off of playing to allow my wrist to heal. Now it is feeling really great, and I would like to get back in shape for competing and playing in orchestras. I need a teacher who can help me achieve this.

Nashville Songwriter's Association Workshop Tuesday Nov. 17th (Boise/Hidden Springs)

Hello fellow songwriters. I know this is kind of late notice but tomorrow night (Novemeber 17th) we are having our second NSAI meeting. The NSAI stands for Nashville Songwriter's Association International. It is a not for profit organization that supports and educates its members as it relates to songwriting. This is a newly formed chapter. We had a great turn-out for our first meeting last month and hope to see more songwriters tomorrow night. The meeting will be held at the Dry Creek Mercantile in Hidden Springs Subdivision in Boise Idaho. The easiest way to find it is to Map Qwest Dry Cry Creek Mencantile with the zipcode 83714. DRUMMER AND BASSIST NEEDED FOR NEW TRIO (Boise)

My name is Aaron and I have been playing guitar/piano and singing for twelve years now. I am ninteen years old and have been living in boise for about two months now. I Really want to get a trio started with a really talented bass player and drummer. We would mainly do originals but I do enjoy having some good covers for live shows. The genre is open but I would say my playing and singing style is very bluesy/soulful/pop. the only thing I want to avoid is really heavy playing such as metal and hard core and so on. I already have two weekly paying gigs in downtown boise that I have been doing solo, but I really need a band to get that extra energy and so I can start booking more shows and charging more money. I have a gig in bend oregon on december 12 opening for 40oz to freedom and would love to get something started by then, there will be about 300 people at that show and I will book three other gigs while we were there that are all paying. So over all I need a couple of very talented musicians to start a very serious project including live gigs, touring, cutting an album and hopefully a major record deal:)

Not the same ol' classic rock! (West Boise)

"Man, I haven't heard that song in years!" That's what I want people coming to our shows to say when they hear us crank out some Replacements, Hoodoogurus or Caroline's Spine. I want to form a 70s/80s/90s classic/alternative rock band, but I don't want to play the same ol' crap as everyone else. AC/DC? Sure, but not "Back in Black". Judas Priest? Hell yeah, but not "You Got Another Thing Coming". Def Leppard? Bet yo' ass, but not "Pour Some Sugar On Me". Nirvana? HELL NO! Might as well just shove bamboo spikes under my fingernails...

I'm a guitarist/songwriter/vocalist in my 40s, looking for musicians with the same vision. Not really a fan of anything that's come out in the last 10-15 years, maybe Fuel, but that's it. There are a lot of great tunes that we early Xers used to listen to on college radio and back when rock radio still rocked. Remember Brother Cane? Cry of Love? Sponge? Let's bring 'em back, jam 'em live, and build a devoted following that's used to hearing "Sweet Child o' Mine" every time they go out.

I play lead and rhythm, and sing some lower range vocals, but singing isn't my strong suit. I'd like to find folks who can harmonize, and at least one who's a high altitude barnstormer of a vocalist. No screamers or growlers, please. I'd also like to join up with a technical shredder guitarist to complement my more bluesy, melodic soloing style.

singer/song writter/guitarist looking for cellist (downtown)

So I'm doing a solo project and i have some studio time coming up sometime this winter and i would really like to get some cello in on a few songs, maybe all of them. I'd consider myself in the indie genre and maybe a little bit of acoustic rock. I think it would be a pretty sweet sound if i could find a cellist to fill in on the bass lines when needed and to kind of take over as lead as well when needed. I cant pay, but i will give credit to whoever plays and there is potential for gigs down the road which most likely will be paying ones. Ive been writting for the past year, ive got nearly 100 songs written down, playing guitar for the past 6 and singing for the past 4. I was also on American Idol this summer, i made it to the exec. producer only for them to ask me to sing a pussy cat dolls song...and they are not easy to sing for most guys...so yea...But with that being said, anyone that has ever tried out for the show knows how hard it is to even make it that far. Hey there music people, what would you guys say is the most important aspect of playing in a band? I'm looking for input into what a guitarist (lead or rhythm) should know BEFORE joining a band. I feel my fingers are able to play very well, however I'm still learning all scales in all keys. What was your playing ability / knowledge of music before joining your first band? the Band Leader directs the singer! (Boise)

Before a gig, the bandleader calls the female singer over to him and tells her, "Tonight, when we do 'Night and Day,' I want you to sing the second verse first, and then break into the bridge one bar earlier than usual. Transpose the bridge up a minor third, but then back down again for the last three bars of it. Then add a 5/4 bar going back into the FIRST chorus, singing on only off-beats. During the sax solo, go to the bridge a bar-and-a-HALF too early, interrupting the solo, finish the first verse, go to the coda a bar late, and then keep singing for a full 3 beats after the band has ended."

Her eyes widen and she says, "That's way too hard, I can't do all that."

He says, "Well! - You did it last night!
