Research & Design Engineer: Audio/Acoustics, Ultrasonics, MEMS (Watertown)

"The most radical technological development in acoustics since the coil loudspeaker was invented in 1925." -- New York Times

Join the Audio Spotlight Design Team

Holosonics is looking for outstanding engineers/physicists to be a part of its talented development team. Holosonics was founded to commercialize its MIT-originated Audio Spotlight(R) technology, which generates audible sound in a tight, narrow beam, that "shines" much like a beam of light. The technology has enjoyed wide coverage by all major news media, and has been adopted by the world's top companies and attractions for controlled sound delivery in thousands of locations. The New York Times called the Audio Spotlight "the most radical technological development in acoustics since the coil loudspeaker was invented in 1925," and the technology has won several awards. Holosonics is located in Watertown, MA, just down the river from Cambridge. Holosonics has no investors, is 100% bootstrapped, and has been profitable since Day 1.

www.holosonics.com

Environment

Holosonics is a somewhat fast-paced, but very solid small business, and we've been around long enough to avoid the haphazard "spinning wheels" approach typical of many small companies (startups). We focus first and foremost on customer value and product utility, so you can be sure that your contributions will be shown in a real working product seen, held, and paid for by real people. Our current client base is mainly professional, but we're moving toward wide consumer markets in the future.

We have a friendly, comfortable environment, a well supplied lab, first-rate technical equipment, and pride ourselves on solid science and engineering performance. We have no investors, only customers, so we avoid the usual politics and other distractions that get in the way of good, meaningful work.

Tasks

The main technical work surrounds our transducer development, which lies at the intersection of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, and materials science. The ideal candidate would have at least a working knowledge in all of these fields, and be capable of flexibility, insight, and intelligent decision making. You will build and evaluate prototypes, take careful measurements, develop models, and move the next-generation technology forward toward widespread manufacturing. When necessary, we also build our own test and measurement apparatus.

In addition to research and development duties, we would expect you to participate in product brainstorming, production/manufacturing design, and have some interaction with key customers, so you can see and learn how your engineering decisions affect the final product. This will not be a place to hide in a lab, but a place where you have a chance to make a real impact, and change the face of the audio industry.

This is an ideal position for someone whose interests in engineering are broader than any one narrow subject.
