One accusation claims then-Mayor Palin threatened to fire Wasillas librarian for refusing to ban books from the town library. Some versions of the rumor come complete with a list of the books that Palin allegedly attempted to ban. Actually, Palin never asked that books be banned; no books were actually banned; and many of the books on the list that Palin supposedly wanted to censor weren't even in print at the time, proving that the list is a fabrication. The librarian was fired, but was told only that Palin felt she didnt support her. She was re-hired the next day. The librarian never claimed that Palin threatened outright to fire her for refusing to ban books.

Senator Bayh,

As a practicing physician I have major concerns with the health care bill before Congress. I actually have read the bill and am shocked by the brazenness of the government's proposed involvement in the patient-physician relationship. The very idea that the government will dictate and ration patient care is dangerous and certainly not helpful in designing a health care system that works for all. Every physician I work with agrees that we need to fix our health care system, but the proposed bills currently making their way through congress will be a disaster if passed.

I ask you respectfully and as a patriotic American to look at the following troubling lines that I have read in the bill. You cannot possibly believe that these proposals are in the best interests of the country and our fellow citizens.

Page 22 of the HC Bill: Mandates that the Govt will audit books of all employers that self-insure!!

Page 30 Sec 123 of HC bill: THERE WILL BE A GOVT COMMITTEE that decides what treatments/benefits you get.

Page 29 lines 4-16 in the HC bill: YOUR HEALTH CARE IS RATIONED!!!

Page 42 of HC Bill: The Health Choices Commissioner will choose your HC benefits for you. You have no choice!

Page 50 Section 152 in HC bill: HC will be provided to ALL non-US citizens, illegal or otherwise.

Page 58 HC Bill: Govt will have real-time access to individuals' finances & a 'National ID Health card' will be issued!

Page 59 HC Bill lines 21-24: Govt will have direct access to your bank accounts for elective funds transfer.

Page 65 Sec 164: Is a payoff subsidized plan for retirees and their families in unions & community organizations: (ACORN).

Page 84 Sec 203 HC bill: Govt mandates ALL benefit packages for private HC plans in the 'Exchange.'

If a state of a emergency was declare and the government or the state order all fire arms to be confiscated from the public, (in this scenario no looting or violence) would the National Guard or the police not honor their oath to the US Constitution, or would they say its their job or duty to carry out the order, and use deadly force to take the gun from the law abiding citizens if the citizens refused to give up their legal guns, and if deadly force was used to take said guns, is it the right for the citizens to return such force to protect itself from the illegal gun confiscation. As a reminder of what Jefferson said: because that would be the final sign that our rights and freedoms are about to be taken from us.

Even though the most of the posts on Boston CL seem to come from the same six cons and six libs, I would estimate that the readership is mostly liberals. After all, this is Massachusetts.

I think you should remind as many liberals as possible to call the senators regarding the health care reform bill. They might not say what you want them to say, though. Keep up the good work!

It is down to three Senators if the health care bill gets to the Senate Floor. Ben Nelson (D) Nebraska, Mary Landrieu (D) Louisiana, and Blanche Lincoln (D) Arkansas. If one of these three Senators does not vote against the bill it will go the Senate floor. Once it is on the floor it will make it a lot harder to stop. All the Senators know this.

Contact the Senators and let them know if they vote now for the bill you will hold it against them if the health care bill passes even if they vote against the bill in the final vote.

Why Join A Revolutionary Socialist Party (Capitalism Does Not Work!)

There are basically two benefits to being a member of a revolutionary party. The first, an educational benefit, plays out on several different levels.

(1) Having a strong command of Marxist theory can be extremely valuable on many different fronts. (a) For example, Marxs Capital provides a sharp analysis of capitalist society so that one can see why irreconcilable differences divide the working class and the capitalist class (because of the extraction of surplus value). Moreover, because these irreconcilable differences form the basis of the system, it becomes clear why capitalism cannot be reformed (capitalism is defined by the production of profit or surplus value). (b) An understanding of history is invaluable. One learns, for example, that the ruling class has never relinquished power voluntarily. And the study of history leads to the conclusion that the history of all hitherto existing societies has indeed been the history of class struggle. Moreover, one learns that ordinary working people, contrary to the convictions of the reformists and almost everyone else, have in fact stood up, organized themselves, taken history in their own hands, and fundamentally altered the social landscape. This insight alone is of incalculable importance. Most of our experience in capitalist society leads us to conclude that any effort to change things is hopeless. Being a member of a party that has a clear picture of history helps individuals maintain a greater perspective. (c) An understanding of human nature is indispensable since one of the most common objections to socialism is that it contradicts human nature. Many people today automatically adopt the assumption that humans are by nature individualistic, selfish, and greedy. Therefore, some argue that socialism, in so far as it contradicts this nature, can only be achieved through force and constant coercion. However, anthropologists who have studied a variety of human societies have concluded that human nature has exhibited a rich array of characteristics and traits and is far from static. And they argue that individuals, far from possessing some fixed, permanent essence, merely reflect the society and culture they are raised in, a thesis that is easily verified by a cursory examination of history. Consequently, the individualism, selfishness, and greed that seem so prolific today do not stem from the individual but from the surrounding capitalist society.


(2) Learning how to provide a sufficient analysis of a particular historical political-economic situation is not easy. For example, what is the correct position to adopt in relation to the movement around Chavez in Venezuela, or Nader in the U.S., or Cindy Sheehan? Different revolutionary parties have adopted radically different approaches to these questions. How does one determine which approach is correct?


(3) In close conjunction with the preceding point, how does one intervene in a specific historical situation? For example, some call for votes for people like Chavez and Sheehan and offer them critical support. Many groups on the left do not do this. What demands do we raise in a union struggle? If one does not provide the correct answers to these questions, one can sometimes perform a major disservice to the working class. However, when some members of the revolutionary party have successfully led struggles in the past, or have participated in them, these experiences provide a wealth of knowledge that can be applied to similar struggles in the present and future. In this way, the party can become a repository of wisdom that can illuminate the path forward.


(4) One learns through all this that Marxism is indeed a science, meaning that it is a rational body of knowledge. Most people today who consider themselves Marxists have no clue how to conduct a rational Marxist analysis. They think all you have to do is declare yourself a revolutionary and suddenly you acquire perfect theoretical vision. Or they think that Marxism is a fundamentally mechanical way of thinking where one simply adds transitional demands, such as workers control, to every struggle. Anything less, in their opinion, constitutes a betrayal of the working class. It takes years of hard work and experience before one becomes adept at providing a genuine Marxist approach. And even when one becomes proficient, mistakes will be made.


All the above points indicate that mastering Marxist theory requires training. And training can best be acquired in a group where discussions are conducted regularly. Moreover, the educational process within a party, when properly conducted, does not stem from the top-down where some esteemed leader simply offers correct analyses from on high. It helps if some members of the party have experience, both theoretically and practically. But all situations are in some sense new and require a new analysis. And the proper analysis can best be achieved through a process of discussion where everyone contributes.


Secondly, aside from education, a revolutionary party can provide a practical benefit. When a group, even a small group, acts in a coordinated way, it can have a significant impact on the course of events. The Socialist Workers Party (SWP) never had more than a few thousand members, but even The New York Times had to acknowledge that its impact was far greater than its numbers would suggest. For example, during the antiwar movement around the U.S. war in Vietnam, the SWP eventually succeeded in winning the majority to the slogan: Bring the Troops Home Now. The Communist Party, on the other hand, peddled the slogan, Negotiate Now, as if the U.S. government had a right to negotiate Vietnams future with the Vietnamese government. By adopting the SWP slogan, the antiwar movement exerted much more pressure on the U.S. government to withdraw. Moreover, the SWP slogan was specifically formulated with the idea of winning G.I.s in the military to an antiwar position. The SWP knew the G.I.s wanted to come home, and when they did return, many joined the antiwar movement. But more importantly, in part because of the antiwar movement, many G.I.s began to oppose the war while still stationed in Vietnam. That fact made it extremely difficult for the U.S. to continue to conduct the war. In any case, the Spartacist slogan, All Indochina Must Go Communist, obviously did not strike a receptive chord among the G.I.s, and the Spartacists had no impact on the course of events.


Although this is far from apparent to most people, the capitalist class realizes its hold on power is tenuous. After all, the capitalists constitute only a small minority of the population. However, the working class represents the vast majority, it occupies the moral high ground, but it constantly suffers from a society that does not operate in its interests. Consequently, representatives of the capitalist class, particularly politicians and the media, incessantly attempt to convince the working class that fundamental change is impossible. They use many subtle tricks in order to accomplish this. For example, there might be a huge antiwar demonstration in San Francisco and The New York Times will not report it, as if to say what ordinary people do is of no significance. Or The New York Times will state that single-payer health care is not an option because the political will to promote it is absent. But The Times does not mention the fact that most people in the U.S. want a single-payer health care system. So The New York Times insinuates that what most people want is irrelevant.


These are just a few examples of the subtle ways used to demoralize people who want fundamental change. But once people are demoralized, the battle is lost because then they wont put up a fight. And, of course, at this point in history in this country, most working people are severely demoralized. And as the economy continues its downward dive while spreading suffering far and wide, working people will become even more demoralized in the coming year, if there is no mass struggle that successfully resists these conditions.


As isolated individuals, we become easily demoralized, in part because we lack the means to initiate significant change and in part because we are not members of a party that can help shield us from the ideological warfare waged by the capitalist class. So the point of joining a party is to refuse to give up. Joining is a refusal to become a victim of demoralization. Instead, we resolve to put up a fight and try to convince others to do the same. And if we do not put up a struggle, we can be assured that the capitalists will get emboldened and make things much worse for us than otherwise.


However, having educated ourselves, when workers are engaged in struggle, we can make a contribution by perhaps proposing the correct demands to form the basis of a united front, or by perhaps suggesting the right tactic to adopt in a specific situation, or even by perhaps leading the struggle itself. In the process we will help educate other workers so that they will be in a better position to launch a struggle aimed at self-liberation. And in the final analysis we can take some satisfaction in knowing that we helped create a better world.

Please post exactly what YOU believe this violation is.

If you mean "upholding the Patriot Act", then I agree that this act violates the Constitution and it should be struck down. I don't think Obama needs to be impeached over it, though. I'd say the previous team who came up with that mess deserved a swift kick in their asses! Including Congress!

Part of the issue, Fox News has taken over 50% of the viewers, and still growing. is that FoxNews has become so big, while the other news outlets are shrinking.FoxNews has become very big, while the other news outlets are shrinking, daily.

FoxNews covers both sides of the story. I didn't watch FoxNews until a year and half ago. I determined the other News outlets were too biased in their coverage, and I could at least see both sides of a story on FoxNews.

FoxNews really needs a competitor.

It's more a feeling of frustration at seeing our country destroyed. It's a real shame that our quality of life is going right down the old obama toilet.

It's hard to figure that obama's actions are just total mistakes, or part of some grander plan.

He seems to want the middle class to lose all freedom and just suffer - with loss of money, loss of freedoms and loss of jobs.

Business people are just hunkering down, keeping things close to their vesat and not expanding, investing or hiring at all. How long will it go on? 'til we get past this ugly desease our country currently has.

The obama administration is like our country has been hit by and bad H1N1 pandemic. We'll get through it, but it'll be a good 10 years of sufferring, toweards recovery form the obama years.

I don't think there's any need to be concerned about the unpatriotic Americans who post here demanding impeachment for the President and prison time for those who voted for Obama. They are not taken seriously anywhere else, and anonymous sites like craigslist are the only places they can scream and whine. They feel powerless to change the world to their liking, and this sense of impotence just makes them more angry. Some of them join the militia movement in order to empower themselves, while others get temporarily relief by ranting on craigslist. I just feel sorry for their families--let's hope they get the crazy ranting out of their systems right here, BEFORE they show up at Thanksgiving dinner.

Your assessment of militia members is a ridiculous stereotype. While many militia members have predjudices against groups of people they don't like, you are the same for making sweeping generalizations about.militia members.

As a gun-toting liberal who has been friends with members of various militias over the years (mostly in two other states), I have to tell you that they have jobs in a variety of fields, some make more money than others, some are devoutly religious and hate porn (and if they enjoy it privately, who cares!) Some of them also hate non-whites, gays, and people with other religious beliefs. Some of them even hate other Christians for not being the "right" kind of Christian. Some of the non-racist militia people I've stayed friends with have asked me to join their group, not realizing that I don't have the proper "hate the government" credentials (when I don't like what our leaders do, I'd rather fix the government than shoot at it.)

You should take up recreational firearms and you'll meet them, too. There are plenty of gun clubs near Boston:

The American crisis is just around the corner. Wall Street's bankers have finally triumphed. Financial vultures, in their rampage for wealth, power, and world control have nearly completely destroyed an imperfect but incredibly free and promising American society. What must we do if we are to survive individually and as a free people?

When a crisis is at hand it is only natural that people seek a leader who can inspire those willing to shoulder the burden of immediate political change. Americans are blessed because we already possess a suitable political structure which can be restored following a "changing of the guard". We need a leader because those individuals who are presently destroying the carefully devised political structure of our nation will never voluntarily relinquish power. However, the good news is that they are few in number. We are many and we are armed to the teeth.

Thanks to the internet, Americans do not need a revolutionary junta, or an armed uprising, or a ballot obliging them to usher in a government through corrupt and compromised political parties. For a start, we need an easily organized independent online panel to provisionally appoint smart honest people who are willing to be replacements. Then We the People will know exactly what to do. We are Americans.

Our experience over the past two hundred years or so has brought some pitfalls that the founders of this country were either unable to anticipate or simply failed to consider seriously enough at the time. The form of our government is not perfect. This is fully understandable. We the People, in Thomas Jefferson's words, are obliged "to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." What could be more American?

The form that this solution takes must consist of a two step process. The first step is to appoint a temporary online panel to identify and recruit men and women to fill vacancies created by arrests and removals. The second step is to arrest or require resignations of politicians and others who have failed in their responsibility to represent the will of We the People, especially with regard to banker bailouts, wars, civil liberties, and other Patriot Act abuses.

Because we understand mainline media problems, the temporary Provisional Replacement Panel and those persons it selects will be listed publicly on the internet. Webmasters and bloggers of alternate news and patriotic websites must support and promote this concept, placing links on their pages to the PRP's website which will list online those scheduled for replacement, together with those selected as their replacements. We will not all agree on specific individuals. The important thing is for us to tell others about this project

Of course, everyone will not agree on the choice of those few persons on the Provisional Replacement Panel. That is fine. The important thing is to have such a panel. The aim is to replace criminals presently occupying positions of power. Who should be on a Provisional Replacement Panel? How about Ron Paul, Ralph Nader and Jesse Ventura for starters?

The panel's job of identifying and recruiting as many replacements as removables must begin immediately. Once this list has been completed and the stage is set, so to speak, a leader will emerge, perhaps from the panel itself. The leader we need will not emerge until the list is completed.

When replacements have been selected, recruited, and listed online, a million or more Online Patriots will be invited, on schedules, to converge on Washington DC, the seat of evil world-empire builders and the destroyers of our country. Online Patriots will be scheduled to replace specific individuals. We can remove top bankers and their lackeys who have been listed online by the PRP for replacement.

We do not call for armed revolution. We expect a massive number of citizens arrests of war criminals and traitors to the Constitution they swore to uphold. The panel will target enemies of this nation, both within and outside of government. If we begin now, this online process from start to the first Replacement Day should not take more than thirty to sixty days.

Political change in America, thanks to our extraordinary history, political structure, founding documents, and today's POWER OF THE INTERNET can result in demanding that named persons presently in power step aside. We the People can accomplish this by knowing our goals, choosing a leader, and following that leader in scheduling and implementing this program.

Those unwilling to step aside must face citizen's arrest. They should be arrested, treated humanely, and incarcerated until defended under established US legal rules in newly established People's Law Courts. If convicted by jury, they must be confined to protect us from possible future malfeasance or abuse. Bloody reprisals may lead to a reign of terror, a condition we never want to see in America.

It will be our responsibility to insist that newly appointed replacements seriously consider those terms and conditions clearly spelled out in our nation's founding documents.

We Online Patriots can do it. If we do not do it, then we neither deserve what our founders referred to as "the blessings of Liberty", nor will we, or our children, or grandchildren be likely to experience them again.

US Deports Lou Dobbs - Living Illegally In Country Since 1961 (With Out Papers )

WANTAGE, NJActing on anonymous tips from within the Hispanic-American community, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials on Wednesday deported Luis Miguel Salvador Aguila Dominguez, who for the last 48 years had been living illegally in the United States under the name Lou Dobbs.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, federal agents stormed the undocumented immigrant's home in an evening raid just hours after the 64-year-old newscaster suddenly announced that he was resigning from CNN, and immediately placed him on an Aeromexico flight departing from Newark Liberty

"Mr. Dominguez did not come quietly, but in the end he came," said Sam Whitlock of the U.S. Border Patrol, who was injured during the arrest. "He pulled a knife on me, like they will, and swore a bunch in Spanish and spit on us when we finally managed to grab him by the serape and throw him against a wall. But the important thing is that he's now back where he belongs."

Evidence collected by investigators indicates that Dominguez/Dobbs, who has long claimed Texas heritage, was actually born in the Mexican state of Puebla to parents of Colombian descent, neither of whom were U.S. citizens. In the summer of his 16th year, he and 14 of his brothers and sisters paid smugglers to let them ride atop packages of cocaine in the cargo hold of a fishing boat bound for Texas under cover of night.
In addition to holding multiple jobs without ever obtaining a guest-worker permit or H-1B visa, "Dobbs" is reported to have collected welfare every month for nearly five decades. He appeared in good health when apprehended, having used Medicaid to obtain numerous health care services over the years, but immigration officials fear he still may have exposed the American population to the many infectious diseases illegal immigrants tend to carry, including both malaria and leprosy.

CNN, as per its policy initiated by Dominguez, is complying freely with the ongoing DHS investigation into the multitude of illegal activities in which its former employee was entrenched.

"No one here knew anything about Mr. Dobbs' past, and to be honest, we never asked," said a source within CNN, who asked not to be identified. "All we knew was that he was willing to take the job most American newscasters didn't wantnamely, speaking out hysterically against immigration at every turn to help us gain ratings points against Fox News."

When searching the former newscaster's house in Wantage, NJ, Border Patrol agents found several boxes of horded food stamps, a fully-equipped stolen-car chop shop, a 350-deck DVD pirating warehouse, and a garment facility where up to 100 illegal workers put in 85-hour weeks producing knockoff purses, shoes, and other counterfeit clothing.

Many younger members of the Border Patrol team that participated in Wednesday's raid said it was "an honor and a privilege" to help deport Dominguez, as years of listening to tirades against illegal immigrants on Lou Dobbs Tonight had been a major factor in their choice of career.

End the "Anchor Baby" provision. Children born on American soil to illegal aliens or visitors without permanent residence status should not be awarded United States citizenship.

Eliminate the U.S. Border Patrol and place border security under the military as our shores are by the Coast Guard. Separate prisons for immigration violators, including American citizens who aid and abet immigration violators, should be created and all current Border Patrol agents can be offered jobs as guards and administrators of those detention centers.

I really appreciate it when I read these posts and find out how naive I have been. For years I believed that the American justice system was exactly as we advertised it, the standard of the world. Over two hundred years of objectivity and fairness. Representation for everyone, regardless how heinous the accusation. Evidently not. Why all the concern? An open civil trial exposes Al Qeada for what is is. A ruthless gang of religious fanatics and political opportunists. They have no official association with the military of any country, why legitimize their claim of waging "war" on the West? We already have to deal with the taint of Guantanamo and torture, the interminable wait for judicial action, the accusation and subsequent release of four hundred fifty supposed terrorists. It is well beyond time to get this over with.
After these trials we can get down to the serious business of punishing citizens who voted for Obama and impeaching treasonous elected officials who support civil trials for 9/11 perpetrators. Not my ideas. This was all posted on Boston CL . Great Americans, one and all. God help us.

Patriots should bring one of those high profile interventionists to round up the libs so we can read letters to
them on how they are destroying the moral fabric of our country and how we will refuse to pay taxes until

Let me tell you about the Happy Land of Make-Believe. Its a magical place where ideology trumps reality, evidence is irrelevant, and illusion reigns supreme.

Liberals are permanent residents of the Happy Land of Make-Believe. Some conservatives are not immune to its allure.

The Happy Land of Make-Believe is populated by journalists, academics, Democrats (and some Republicans) , feminists, gay activists, pacifists, isolationists, socialists and other refugees from the real world. A resident of the Happy Land of Make-Believe may be identified by his blind faith in the following propositions:

That after marching 20 miles with a full pack, a 90-lb woman is every bit as effective in combat as a 190-lb. man

That two men living together sodomizing each other are now a family rather than two men living together sodomizing each other

That we can provide health insurance for millions who are currently uninsured and it will neither increase insurance costs, result in rationing or necessitate a general tax increase

That we can solve the problem of illegal immigration by bestowing amnesties on an estimated 12 million to 15 million of them, which it goes without saying wont send millions more heading for our borders.

That a man whos had himself mutilated and takes regular doses of female hormones is now a woman, his chromosomal makeup not withstanding

That criminals, psychopaths and jihadists obey gun laws

That a Palestinian state wont look like Dodge City on a Saturday night with everyone on crack cocaine

That we can keep brutal regimes from acquiring nuclear weapons by confessing our sins and sending diplomats to sit around a conference table with them

The Happy Land of Make-Believe is built on one part wishful thinking, one part political correctness and one-part fear. In Make-Believe Land, acknowledging reality is insensitive and a crime against diversity. Unpleasant truths are ignored and cherished dogmas go unchallenged. Conceding the existence of evil admits that the world is a dangerous place and monsters must be confronted or the innocent will suffer.

Nowhere is the Happy Land of Make-Believe more manifest than in the matter of Islam, Moslems and terrorism. Hence, the reaction to the Fort Hood murders.

This we know of Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the man charged with 13 counts of murder:

While he was shooting fellow soldiers, Hassan shouted Allahu Akhbar! (Allah is the greatest). Interesting, its always cries of Allah-this or Allah-that which accompany acts of terrorism, never Jesus saves! or Mazel Tov!

Despite having been born in the United States, Hasan listed his nationality as Palestinian.

He was an avid proselytizer for Islam. At Walter Reed Hospital, where Dr. Hasan was a psychiatric intern and a psychiatrist for six years, he was reprimanded for trying to win converts to the religion of peace. Since, by definition, his patients all had mental problems, its surprising he wasnt more successful. He also handed out Korans prior to the killing spree, thereby exemplifying cause and effect.

While at Walter Reed, Hassan attended the radical Dar al-Hijrah mosque, in Falls Church, VA, at the same time as two of the 9/11 terrorists. Hasan became quite attached to the mosques jihad-preaching imam, Anwar al-Awlaki, and stayed in touch with him via the Internet when al-Awlaki relocated to Yemen.

Over the course of years, Hasan told his fellow officers that he believed the U.S. Army is at war with Muslims, that suicide bombers are like soldiers who throw themselves on live grenades to save their buddies, and that Muslims have a right to rise up against the U.S. military. He also spoke approvingly of individuals who would strap bombs on themselves and go into Times Square.

Had an evangelical Christian serving in the military expressed the same sentiments (say by declaring that killing abortionists is justifiable homicide or that the U.S. government is at war with Christians) he would have been cashiered in no time flat. Other than mild reprimands, no disciplinary action was taken against Hasan. As another staff member at Walter Reed explained, You dont want to close him down just because his views are different. Now, shut your eyes tightly and repeat after me: Militant Islam is just different and you dont want to close down jihadist ravings.

In 2007, Hasan did a show-and-tell for other personnel at the hospital, in the form of a slide presentation on The Koranic World View As it Relates to Muslims in the Military. Slide #11 observed, Its getting harder and harder to morally justify being in a military that seems constantly engaged against fellow Muslims.

None of this alerted his colleagues, the brass or the FBI to Hasans potential to go Islamic. Their answer was to order him to take comparative religion courses, which was supposed to encourage him to love Christians and Jews.

All that was missing was the good doctor wearing a name tag that said: Hi, Im Major Nidal Hasan. Where the infidels at?

The commander in chief, the media and the generals are in deep denial about Hasans motivation.

It is unclear what might have motivated Major Hasan, The New York Times declared in its initial report. (Allahu Akhbar wasnt a dead giveaway?) A follow-up story was headlined Told of War Horror, Gunman Feared Deployment a sort of pre-post-traumatic stress syndrome. Yes, Dr. Hasan would have been in the thick of things. A lot of shrinks come back from Afghanistan missing a clipboard or a prescription pad.

Associated Press, The Washington Post and National Public Radio initially hadnt a clue as to why a swell guy like Hasan would open fire on fellow soldiers. (Hint: It was Major Hasan, in the Soldier Readiness Center, with a Koran and a 5.7-millimeter handgun, shouting Allah is Groovy!)

Interviewed on Meet the Press, on November 8, Army Chief of Staff General William Casey (who missed his calling as a sensitivity trainer) pleaded: Our diversity, not only in our Army, but in our country, is a strength. And as horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think thats worse.

Here is the ideal warrior for the Age of Obama. Casey should demonstrate his commitment to diversity by offering to lead a squad of randomly picked Muslim GIs on a mission in Afghanistan all of whom are behind him with loaded weapons.

Barack Obama is the mayor of the Happy Land of Make-Believe. Speaking at a memorial service at Fort Hood on November 10th, President My-Job-is-to- Fight-Negative- Stereotypes- of-Islam told mourners that the twisted logic that led to the tragedy was too hard to comprehend.

Now, if Major Hasan had been a follower of Mother Theresa or Mahatma Gandhi, whose teachings he interpreted as a license to kill, that would be twisted logic.

As a Moslem who takes his faith seriously, what Major Hasan did is perfectly comprehensible. The U.S. Army is killing Moslems. Members of the religion of peace have a sacred duty to protect their co-religionists. America is evil. Suicide bombing is justified. Oh yes, and, as Hasan explained to his colleagues during his slide presentation, We (Muslims) love death more than you (infidels) love life.

In the Happy Land of Make Believe, Islam is a warm and cuddly creed, worthy of respect bordering on reverence --1,500 years of evidence notwithstanding. Moslem militants dont understand their own religion. Jihad really means a spiritual struggle, not the slaughter of unbelievers. The scholars and religious authorities of Cairos Al Azhar, the citadel of Sunni orthodoxy, are pulling our legs when they proclaim, Jihad means to war against non-Muslims to establish the supremacy of Islam.

Thus, every act of terrorism becomes a misunderstanding or a symptom of mental illness. Would that Moslems only understood their religion as well as Obama, Casey, Condolezza Rice (who once dubbed Islam the religion of love and peace), George W. Bush, and The New York Times.

Illegal immigrants can get emergency care through Medicaid, the federal-state program for the poor and people with disabilities. But they can't get non-emergency care unless they pay. They aren't supposed to get anything but emergency care but some hospitals and clinics do allow it. it's illegal to ask about immigration status or deny emergency care. They hit the emergency rooms and after services are rendered, they hit the bricks. Since they are illegal, there is simply no way to find them to force them to pay their health care bills. This has caused hundreds of hospitals to simply shut down due to the illegal immigrants sucking them dry. They DO get food stamps and medical card as well WICK so even though they are here illegally they still get all the free goods.

Nativists to 'Patriots'
As evidence of a militia resurgence mounts, nativist vigilantes are increasingly adopting the ideas of the 'Patriot' movement

Camp Vigilance, Calif. A call from ResistNet blares through this makeshift camp near the small community of Boulevard: "We all know what happens when you back an animal into a corner it fights back. The way I see it, that's exactly the direction this country is heading. They're backing us into a corner. It's getting to be time to fight back."

Located two-and-a-half miles north of Mexico in the high, rugged desert of unincorporated eastern San Diego County, Camp Vigilance, known colloquially as "Camp V," is a sizable Minuteman border vigilante compound situated amidst 170 privately owned acres.

Adjacent to active human and narcotics smuggling corridors, Camp V consists of roughly 100 tent camping sites, a half dozen or so full RV docking bays, a bunkhouse, a radio communications center, a mess hall and meeting grounds, all within a gated and well-guarded security perimeter.

On this night in late May, a dozen or so Minutemen are checking their weapons, testing batteries in their night-vision goggles and thermal-vision scopes, donning body armor and making other preparations for sundown-to-sunup reconnaissance patrols. A public address system plugged into a massive RV amplifies ResistNet, an Internet radio program broadcast by the Patriot Network, which promotes conspiracy theories and right-wing antigovernment militancy. Since the beginning of this year, ResistNet and other Patriot Network programs have become quite popular at Camp V, as well as other remote Minuteman outposts in southern California and Arizona.

The broadcast continues: "I can see the true American patriots are being backed into a corner. They're getting ready to strike back at their captors, the greedy, evil vipers in the high offices of this land."

Such exhortations have little to do with border security or undocumented immigration, the issues that launched the original Minuteman Project in 2005 and inspired its many spin-offs, imitators and splinter factions. Instead, the antigovernment screed ringing through Camp V represents a significant, ongoing shift in the nativist vigilante subculture, as major elements of various Minuteman organizations appear to be morphing into a new paramilitary wing of the resurgent antigovernment "Patriot" movement.

Increasingly, Minutemen are giving credence to the sort of fringe conspiracy theories that have long typified militia and other so-called Patriot groups. Although the Minuteman movement from its inception has been permeated with the Aztlan or "reconquista" conspiracy theory which holds that the Mexican government is driving illegal immigration into the U.S. as part of a covert effort to "reconquer" the American Southwest the conspiracy theories that are now taking root in the movement have little or nothing to do with border security or immigration. They include the belief that a massive cover-up has been conducted regarding Barack Obama's birth certificate, which supposedly shows that he was born in Africa and is therefore ineligible to serve as president of the United States.

At several eastern San Diego County vigilante camps in mid-May, there were serious discussions about the global banking system being controlled by an ancient secret society called the Illuminati. Another theory floated involved a cult devoted to the Egyptian god of the afterlife, Osiris, operating within the NASA space agency and perhaps arranging with extraterrestrials for a hostile takeover of Earth.

Further indicating the nativist-to-Patriot drift of the Minutemen is the fact that in recent months a number of Minuteman factions have begun promoting the ideology of so-called "sovereign citizens," a bizarre pseudo-legal philosophy whose adherents claim they're not U.S. citizens and are not subject to federal or state laws, only to "common law courts" a sort of people's tribunal with no judges or lawyers. The most notorious advocates of sovereign citizens ideology include Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols and members of the now defunct Montana Freemen, a violent militia outfit. The larger Patriot movement is made up of tax protesters, militia members and sovereign citizens.

Accompanying the rise of conspiracy theories and sovereign citizen ideology within the Minuteman movement has been a spike in online and campfire chatter about the potential need for armed insurrection in the near future. This trend toward contemplated violence was most graphically illustrated by the May 30 home invasion murders of a Latino man and his 9-year-old daughter in Arivaca, Ariz., that were allegedly orchestrated by the leader of Minutemen American Defense to fund her group's vigilante activities.

All of these disturbing nativist-to-Patriot trends have taken shape during a period in which, by all indications, the number of Latino immigrants attempting to cross the U.S. border has dropped to record lows, due in large part to the country's faltering economy. According to a June report by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the number of U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions fell to 724,000 last year. That marked the lowest level since 1973 and a decline of more than 50% from 2000, when apprehensions peaked at 1.67 million.

Despite this marked drop in undocumented border crossings, however, the number of Minuteman border operations, paramilitary training exercises and rallies continues to increase, and new Minuteman groups continue to form. What's changed is that instead of focusing exclusively on undocumented immigration, growing numbers of Minutemen and their fellow travelers now perceive immigration as merely a glaring symptom of a much broader problem. The larger problem, they believe, involves shadowy conspiracies threatening American sovereignty, unwelcome demographic changes polluting American culture, and a potentially totalitarian government, driven by an illegitimate president, bent on seizing all firearms, trampling the Constitution and imposing a fascist-socialist system on a pathetically docile citizenry.

"We're still concerned about the border intruders, but since this all started we've become aware of the fact that border intruders are just pawns in the big game," says "Jawbone," a member of the Campo Minutemen, a particularly hard-core faction based a few miles east of Camp V. "Stopping the border intruders isn't going to keep the shit from hitting the fan. If and when it does, we'll be ready. All this [Minuteman border operations] is just a dress rehearsal for the big dance."

One of the leaders of the Campo Minutemen, Britt "Kingfish" Craig, recently appeared on "Patriot's Pipeline Radio Show" along with co-guest Lloyd Marcus, the singer-songwriter responsible for "Tea Party Anthem," a protest ditty written for the "tea party" tax protests that took place across the country April 15.

"Tea Party Anthem" has become the Campo Minutemen fight song. Most of its members know at least the first verse by heart: "Mr. President! Your stimulus is sure to bust./It's just a socialist scheme./The only thing it will do/Is kill the American Dream."

As part of their campaign to stop President Obama from killing the American Dream, various Minuteman groups, including the Campo Minutemen, are distributing a sovereign citizen "criminal complaint petition" demanding that Obama appear before an "American Grand Jury" to answer charges of treason.

Hundreds of Minutemen signed the petition at a large Minuteman "muster," or rally, in Cochise County, Ariz., in late May. More than a dozen Minuteman organizations were represented at the rally, along with members of the Arizona Citizens Militia, a traditional Patriot militia that regularly conducts armed survivalist training exercises in the mountains and woods of northern Arizona. During one recent exercise, members were "waterboarded" by a "professional interrogator."

Also present at the Cochise County muster were members of Minuteman American Defense (MAD), the Everett, Wash.-based group led by Shawna Forde, who was arrested less than a month later in the May 30 double murder in Arivaca, Ariz. Also arrested were MAD Operations Director Jason Bush and a third MAD member. According to law enforcement authorities, the three believed the man they killed was a narcotics trafficker who kept large sums of money in his trailer.

Forde's half-brother, Merill Metzger, told the Arizona Daily Star that shortly before the murders Forde started talking about forming an "underground militia" that would be funded by robbing drug dealers. "She was talking about starting a revolution against the United States government," he said.

Following her arrest, Forde was denounced by key Minuteman leaders including Jeff Schwilk, head of the San Diego Minutemen, a hard-line group with a well-deserved reputation for confrontational tactics. The fact that a hothead like Schwilk has become a de facto spokesman for the Minuteman movement indicates how radicalized the movement has become since its early days of media-friendly publicity stunts involving retirees sitting in lawn chairs armed only with binoculars.

In a mid-April mass E-mail to followers, Schwilk linked his group's resistance to "the invasion from Mexico" with the greater cause of thwarting the "socialist takeover" of America. In the same E-mail, Schwilk announced the formation of the Patriot Coalition, made up of 23 organizations including Minuteman factions, tax-protest groups, pro-gun rights groups and two anti-immigration outfits listed as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center. A subsequent press release described the common cause of the groups under the motto, "Secure Borders, Constitution and Rule of Law." It stated that "Patriotic and Constitutional American grassroots groups" had come together to "fight the growing threats to our region and to the taxpaying American citizens."

It used to be that Minutemen declared their vigilance against foreign invaders. Now they're taking a stand against perceived enemies both foreign and domestic. "Revolution is brewing!" Schwilk declared.

The Second Wave
Around the country, evidence accumulates of a return of the militias and the larger antigovernment 'Patriot' movement

In Pensacola, Fla., retired FBI agent Ted Gunderson tells a gathering of antigovernment "Patriots" that the federal government has set up 1,000 internment camps across the country and is storing 30,000 guillotines and a half-million caskets in Atlanta. They're there for the day the government finally declares martial law and moves in to round up or kill American dissenters, he says. "They're going to keep track of all of us, folks," Gunderson warns.

Outside Atlanta, a so-called "American Grand Jury" issues an "indictment" of Barack Obama for fraud and treason because, the panel concludes, he wasn't born in the United States and is illegally occupying the office of president. Other sham "grand juries" around the country follow suit.

And on the site in Lexington, Mass., where the opening shots of the Revolutionary War were fired in 1775, members of Oath Keepers, a newly formed group of law enforcement officers, military men and veterans, "muster" on April 19 to reaffirm their pledge to defend the U.S. Constitution. "We're in perilous times perhaps far more perilous than in 1775," says the man administering the oath. April 19 is the anniversary not only of the battle of Lexington Green, but also of the 1993 conflagration at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, and the lethal bombing two years later of the Oklahoma City federal building seminal events in the lore of the extreme right, in particular the antigovernment Patriot movement.

Almost 10 years after it seemed to disappear from American life, there are unmistakable signs of a revival of what in the 1990s was commonly called the militia movement. From Idaho to New Jersey and Michigan to Florida, men in khaki and camouflage are back in the woods, gathering to practice the paramilitary skills they believe will be needed to fend off the socialistic troops of the "New World Order."

One big difference from the militia movement of the 1990s is that the face of the federal government the enemy that almost all parts of the extreme right see as the primary threat to freedom is now black. And the fact that the president is an African American has injected a strong racial element into even those parts of the radical right, like the militias, that in the past were not primarily motivated by race hate. Contributing to the racial animus have been fears on the far right about the consequences of Latino immigration.

Militia rhetoric is being heard widely once more, often from a second generation of ideologues, and conspiracy theories are being energetically revived or invented anew. "Paper terrorism" the use of property liens, bogus legal documents and "citizens' grand juries" to attack enemies and, sometimes, reap illegal fortunes is again proliferating, to the point where the government has set up special efforts to rein in so-called "tax defiers" and to track threats against judges. What's more, Patriot fears about the government are being amplified by a loud new group of ostensibly mainstream media commentators and politicians.

It's not 1996 all over again, or 1997 or 1998. Although there has been a remarkable rash of domestic terrorist incidents since Obama's election in November, it has not reached the level of criminal violence, attempted terrorist attacks and white-hot language that marked the militia movement at its peak. But militia training events, huge numbers of which are now viewable on YouTube videos, are spreading. One federal agency estimates that 50 new militia training groups have sprung up in less than two years. Sales of guns and ammunition have skyrocketed amid fears of new gun control laws, much as they did in the 1990s.

The situation has many authorities worried. Militiamen, white supremacists, anti-Semites, nativists, tax protesters and a range of other activists of the radical right are cross-pollinating and may even be coalescing. In the words of a February report from law enforcement officials in Missouri, a variety of factors have combined recently to create "a lush environment for militia activity."

"You're seeing the bubbling [of antigovernment sentiment] right now," says Bart McEntire, who has infiltrated racist hate groups and now is the supervisory special agent for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Roanoke, Va. "You see people buying into what they're saying. It's primed to grow. The only thing you don't have to set it on fire is a Waco or Ruby Ridge."

Another federal law enforcement official knowledgeable about militia groups agrees. He asked not to be identified because he is not authorized to speak publicly about them. "They're not at the level we saw in '94-'95," he says. "But this is the most significant growth we've seen in 10 to 12 years. All it's lacking is a spark. I think it's only a matter of time before you see threats and violence."

Shots, Plots and 'Sovereigns'
In fact, threats and violence from the radical right already are accelerating (see last section of this report, a list of 75 domestic terrorist plots and rampages since 1995). In recent months, men with antigovernment, racist, anti-Semitic or pro-militia views have allegedly committed a series of high-profile murders including the killings of six law enforcement officers since April.

Most of these recent murders and plots seem to have been at least partially prompted by Obama's election. One man "very upset" with the election of America's first black president was building a radioactive "dirty bomb"; another, a Marine, was planning to assassinate Obama, as were two racist skinheads in Tennessee; still another angry at the election and said to be interested in joining a militia killed two sheriff's deputies in Florida. A man in Pittsburgh who feared Jews and gun confiscations murdered three police officers. Near Boston, a white man angered by the alleged "genocide" of his race shot to death two African immigrants and intended to murder as many Jews as possible. An 88-year-old neo-Nazi killed a guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. And an abortion physician in Kansas was murdered by a man steeped in the ideology of the "sovereign citizens" movement.

So-called sovereign citizens are people who subscribe to an ideology, originated by the anti-Semitic Posse Comitatus of the 1980s, that claims that whites are a higher kind of citizen subject only to "common law," not the dictates of the government while blacks are mere "14th Amendment citizens" who must obey their government masters. Although not all sovereigns subscribe to or even know about the theory's racist basis, most contend that they do not have to pay taxes, are not subject to most laws, and are not citizens of the United States.

Authorities and anecdotal evidence suggest that sovereign citizens who, along with tax protesters and militia members, form the larger Patriot movement may make up the most dramatically reenergized sector of the radical right. In February, the FBI launched a national operation targeting white supremacists and "militia/sovereign citizen extremist groups" after noting an upsurge in such organizations, The Wall Street Journal reported. The aim is to gather intelligence about "this emerging threat," according to an FBI memo cited by the newspaper.

Increasingly, sovereign citizens are claiming they aren't subject to income taxes so much so that the Department of Justice last year kicked off a National Tax Defier Initiative to deal with the volume of cases. At the same time, more and more seem to be engaging in "paper terrorism," even though more than 30 states passed or strengthened laws outlawing the filing of unjustified property liens and simulating legal process (by setting up pseudo-legal "common law courts" and "citizens' grand juries") in response to sovereign activity in the 1990s.

A Michigan man whose company allegedly doubled as the headquarters of a militia group, for example, was arrested in May on charges that he placed bogus liens on property owned by courthouse officials and police officers to harass them and ruin their credit. In March, authorities raided a Las Vegas printing firm where meetings of the "Sovereign People's Court for the United States" were conducted in a mock courtroom. Seminars allegedly were taught there on how to use phony documents and other illegal means to pay off creditors. Four people were arrested on money-laundering, tax and weapons charges.

Due to a spike in "inappropriate communications," including many from sovereign citizens, the U.S. Marshals Service has opened a clearinghouse in suburban Washington, D.C., for assessing risks to court personnel. The incidents include telephone and written threats against federal judges and prosecutors, as well as bomb threats and biochemical incidents. In fiscal 2008, there were 1,278 threats and harassing communications more than double the number of six years earlier. The number of such incidents is on pace to increase again in fiscal 2009. Sovereign citizens account for a small percentage of the cases, but theirs are more complex and generally require more resources, says Michael Prout, assistant director of judicial security for the marshals. "They are resourceful groups," he adds.

Some sovereign citizen attempts to skirt the law have been farcical. An Arkansas jury needed only seven minutes in April to convict Richard Bauer, 70, of robbing a bank. Bauer had argued that the government took his money several times, leaving him with almost nothing. "I'm a constitutionalist," he insisted, adding that "every single act was justifiable." A month earlier, a Pennsylvania man charged with drunken driving told court officials that they lacked jurisdiction over him because he was a "sovereign man." Then he changed his mind and pleaded guilty. In Nevada, a sovereign citizen perhaps a Dr. Seuss fan used the peculiar punctuation of names that is favored by the movement; his name, he declared, was "I am: Sam."

But few of the cases are that amusing. In February, a New York man who once declared himself a "sovereign citizen" of the "Republic of New York" and said that he enjoyed studying "the organic Constitution and the Bill of Rights" allegedly shot and killed four people. His murder case was pending at press time.

Swearing at the Government
Oath Keepers, the military and police organization that was formed earlier this year and held its April muster on Lexington Green, may be a particularly worrisome example of the Patriot revival. Members vow to fulfill the oaths to the Constitution that they swore while in the military or law enforcement. "Our oath is to the Constitution, not to the politicians, and we will not obey unconstitutional (and thus illegal) and immoral orders," the group says. Oath Keepers lists 10 orders its members won't obey, including two that reference U.S. concentration camps.

That same pugnacious attitude was on display after conservatives attacked an April report from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that suggested a resurgence of radical right-wing activity was under way. "We will not fear our government; they will fear us," one man, who appeared to be on active duty in the Army, said in an angry video sent to the Oath Keepers blog. In another video at the site, a man who said he was a former Army paratrooper in Afghanistan and Iraq described President Obama as "an enemy of the state," adding, "I would rather die than be a slave to my government." The Oath Keepers site soon began hawking T-shirts with slogans like "I'm a Right Wing Extremist and Damn Proud of It!"

In April, Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes a Yale Law School graduate and former aide to U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (a Texas Republican and hard-line libertarian) worried about a coming dictatorship. "We know that if the day should come where a full-blown dictatorship would come, or tyranny it can only happen if those men, our brothers in arms, go along and comply with unconstitutional, unlawful orders," Rhodes told conspiracy-minded radio host Alex Jones. "Imagine if we focus on the police and military. Game over for the New World Order."

He's not the first to think so. In the 1990s, retired Phoenix cop and conspiracy enthusiast Jack McLamb created an outfit called Police Against the New World Order and produced a 75-page document entitled Operation Vampire Killer 2000: American Police Action Plan for Stopping World Government Rule.

It's not known how large Oath Keepers is. But there is some evidence beyond the group's mere existence to suggest that today's Patriots are again making inroads into law enforcement the leak of the DHS report, along with those of a couple of similar law enforcement reports, was likely the work of a sworn officer. Rhodes claims to know a federal officer leaked the DHS report, and says Oath Keepers is "hearing from more and more federal officers all the time."

The group does seem to be on the radar of federal law enforcement officers. In May, a member complained on the group's website of a visit to his farm by FBI agents who asked him, he said, about training he provides in firearms, survival skills and the like.

One Oath Keeper is longtime militia hero Richard Mack, a former sheriff of a rural Arizona county who collaborated with white supremacist Randy Weaver on a book and who, along with others, won a U.S. Supreme Court decision that weakened the Brady Bill gun control law in the 1990s. "The greatest threat we face today is not terrorists; it is our federal government," Mack says on his website. "One of the best and easiest solutions is to depend on local officials, especially the sheriff, to stand against federal intervention and federal criminality." Mack's views echo those of the Posse Comitatus, which believed that sheriffs are the highest law enforcement authorities in America. "I pray for the day that a sheriff in this country will arrest an IRS agent for trespassing or attempting to victimize citizens in that particular sheriff's county," Mack said in a video he made for Oath Keepers.

Why the Return?
Why are militias and the larger Patriot movement making a comeback?

The original militia movement took off in the mid-1990s, with the first large militias appearing in 1994 and growth continuing over the next several years. The movement reflected widespread anger over what was seen as the meddling of a relatively liberal administration in Washington from gun control to environmental laws to a variety of other federal mandates. But what really ignited the movement was the bloodshed in Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and Waco, Texas. In 1992, during a standoff between white supremacist Randy Weaver's family in Idaho and federal agents a confrontation that began with Weaver's sale of an illegal weapon Weaver's son and wife were killed, along with a U.S. marshal. The following year, some 80 members of the gun-loving Branch Davidian cult died in a fire that ended a 52-day standoff with federal agents in Texas. Thousands of Americans saw these events as proof that the federal government was prepared to murder its own citizens in order to enforce a kind of liberal orthodoxy a so-called "New World Order" (NWO) that reflected the economic and political globalization that militia backers felt was robbing their country of its independence and unique culture.

The movement was animated by a welter of conspiracy theories, the bulk of them decrying NWO plots that were said to be aimed at imposing socialism on the United States, sending patriotic Americans to prison camps, destroying farmers with secret weather machines, and so on. Most militia enthusiasts also blamed the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing on the government it was a "false flag" operation carried out by the Clinton Administration, they contended, and designed to soften up the American public to accept draconian anti-terrorism legislation.

But the movement of the '90s ultimately wound down, almost petering out after the turn of the millennium. That was for a variety of reasons, including the arrests of many militia backers in terrorist plots, the jailing of hundreds of others on weapons violations, and the violence the movement continued to produce even after 168 people, including 19 children, were murdered in Oklahoma City by men steeped in the ideology of both militias and racist hate groups. The failure of any of the many dire Patriot predictions or conspiracy theories to come true also hurt the movement, as did the 2000 election of a conservative president, which had the effect of defusing militia backers' anger. Apocalyptic warnings from militia leaders about an expected "Y2K" collapse on Jan. 1, 2000, also turned out to be entirely without merit, becoming a kind of final nail in the coffin of the movement.

Now, it seems, they are back. Every month, there are militia trainings announced around the country and untold numbers that are not publicized. The Internet teems with training videos, information about meetings and rallies, far-fetched rumors and conspiracy theories. Joining 1990s militia stalwarts like Gunderson and Mack is a new generation of activists, as exemplified in the case of Edward Koernke. Koernke's father, Mark Koernke, was a prominent '90s militia propagandist known as "Mark from Michigan." The elder Koernke served nearly six years in prison on charges that included assaulting police. Today, his son hosts an Internet radio show devoted to all things militia.

The current resurgence has several apparent causes. In the largest sense, it is again a response to real societal stresses and strains, from the seemingly inevitable rise of multiculturalism to the faltering economy to another liberal administration, this one headed by a black man. Similar factors have driven the number of race-based hate groups, as distinct from Patriot groups, from 602 in 2000 to 926 in 2008, according to research by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

"This frequently happens when elections favor the political left and the society is seen as moving toward greater social equality or away from traditional societal hierarchies," Chip Berlet, a long-time analyst of the radical right at Political Research Associates, said in a June newsletter. "In this scenario, it is easier for right-wing demagogues to successfully demonize liberals," immigrants and others.

In fact, the anti-immigration movement is both fueling and helping to racialize the antigovernment Patriot resurgence. More and more, members of nativist groups like the Minutemen are adopting core militia ideas and fears (see next section of this report). And they have contributed their own conspiracy theories about the secret Mexican "Plan de Aztlan" to reconquer the American Southwest, and another involving the secretly arranged merger of the United States, Mexico and Canada into a "North American Union" to the long list of nefarious plots already identified by the Patriot movement.

Far-right fears of conspiracies have come from other quarters, as well, most notably from the so-called "birthers" who have filed a series of lawsuits making the claim that Obama is not a U.S. citizen. These spurious claims first gained traction when prominent extremists like writer Jerome Corsi, politician Alan Keyes and Watergate felon and radio show host G. Gordon Liddy questioned the validity of the president's birth certificate. Many Patriots have also adopted conspiracy theories about secret government involvement in events like the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the crash of TWA Flight 800 in 1996.

"The current political environment is awash with seemingly absurd but nonetheless influential conspiracy theories, hyperbolic claims and demonized targets," Berlet concluded. "And this creates a milieu where violence is a likely outcome."

Going Mainstream
A remarkable aspect of the current antigovernment movement is the extent to which it has gained support from elected officials and mainstream media outlets. Lawmakers complaining about the intrusiveness of the federal government have introduced 10th Amendment resolutions (reasserting that those powers not granted to the federal government remain with the states) in about three dozen states. In Texas, Gov. Rick Perry raised the prospect of secession several months after Obama's inauguration a notion first brought up there in the '90s by the militia-like Republic of Texas. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said she feared that the president was planning "reeducation camps for young people," while U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.), evoking memories of the discredited communist-hunter Sen. Joseph McCarthy, warned of 17 "socialists" in Congress. Fox News host Glenn Beck, who has called Obama a fascist, a Nazi and a Marxist, even re-floated militia conspiracy theories of the 1990s alleging a secret network of government-run concentration camps.

The original movement also had its mainstream backers, but they were largely confined to talk radio; today, Beck is just one of the well-known cable TV news personalities to air fictitious conspiracies and other unlikely Patriot ideas. CNN's Lou Dobbs has treated the so-called Aztlan conspiracy as a bona fide concern and questioned the validity of Obama's birth certificate despite his own network's definitive debunking of that claim. On MSNBC, commentator Pat Buchanan suggested recently that white Americans are now suffering "exactly what was done to black folks." On FOX News, regular contributor Dick Morris said, "Those crazies in Montana who say, 'We're going to kill ATF agents because the U.N.'s going to take over' well, they're beginning to have a case."

At the same time, players like the National Rifle Association, which in the 1990s publicly attacked federal law enforcement agents as "jackbooted thugs," are back at it. Two months before the election last fall, firearms manufacturers joined forces to promote NRA membership in a national campaign ominously dubbed "Prepare for the Storm in 2008."

Gun shows, too, are back as major venues for militia-like ideology. In a video produced in April by Max Blumenthal, senior writer at the online news site The Daily Beast, one man interviewed at a show said, "If Obama tries to get rid of our guns, it's just a step away from trying to take away everything else." Another said show attendees were "preparing for the worst."

Patriot ideology also has crept into the anti-tax "tea parties" that were staged by conservatives around the country in April and July. In addition to protesting government spending and taxation, some demonstrators called for the sovereignty of the states, abolition of the Federal Reserve (a long-time bogeyman of the radical right), and an end to "socialism" in Washington. At the Jacksonville, Fla., July tea party, some protesters carried signs that compared President Obama to Adolf Hitler.

Once again, fearful Patriots are scurrying to prepare for what they see as the coming societal meltdown, stockpiling not only weaponry but food and an array of other items. Newsletter publisher Lee Bellinger, for instance, peddles Social Chaos Survival Guide: Smart, Savvy Precautions to Make You Self-Reliant in These Dangerous Times and warns of "impending national social chaos." The book, he says, is "for people who want to stand their ground without attracting a whole lot of attention either from the authorities" or "mobs of desperate fellow citizens."

The recent Department of Homeland Security report also pointed to the role of the Internet in the current movement: "Unlike the earlier period, the advent of the Internet and other information-age technologies since the 1990s has given domestic extremists greater access to information related to bomb-making, weapons training and tactics, as well as targeting of individuals, organizations and facilities, potentially making the consequences of their violence more severe."

Whither the Militia Movement?
Evidence that angry Americans are arming themselves for action is growing. In March, for instance, a Spokane, Wash., man pleaded guilty to illegally possessing two grenade launchers, 54 grenades, 37 machine guns, eight silencers and a variety of explosives in a storage unit. The man had an "End the Fed" bumper sticker on his vehicle. In May, another Washington resident was charged with keeping an illegal cache of weapons that included a machine gun, four silencers, and two guns made by a local gunsmith and inscribed with "Christian warrior" and "NObama."

In Nebraska, a jury convicted Allison Klanecky for possession of unregistered grenade components. Prosecutors said that a search of Klanecky's barn and an underground bunker turned up dozens of containers of explosive powder, fuses and other components that could be used to make up to 93 grenades, plus an unregistered 12-gauge military shotgun called a "Streetsweeper." Klanecky was involved in an end-times group called The Prophecy Club that sells conspiracy books and DVDs on everything from the New World Order to globalism and the 9/11 attacks.

A good illustration of antigovernment Patriot movement paranoia was the reaction to a National Guard exercise planned for April in the little town of Arcadia, Iowa. The guardsmen had intended to conduct a four-day mock search for an arms dealer that would include patrolling the town's streets, distributing photos of the fictional bad guy and knocking on doors of residents who agreed to participate in the drill.

Alex Jones, the radio host and conspiracy theorist, got wind of the plans and interviewed a National Guard official, setting off an avalanche of angry calls and visits to his website from people who feared the exercise was really about imposing a dictatorship or martial law on the country. "Tell them that ANY violation of your rights will result in a 'Live Fire Exercise,'" one such person wrote on Jones' Infowars.com website. "If they come, come loaded for war!"

That incident showed how quickly militia enthusiasts now mobilize, thanks to the Internet. The National Guard rapidly scaled back its planned exercise, although it denied that the deluge of complaints had anything to do with its decision.

The sounds of violence are growing louder. The Idaho Citizens Constitutional Militia recently posted an opening for a "field sniper." Around the same time, an Ohio Militia member, face hidden by a bandana and voice distorted electronically, posted a video to YouTube. "People need to wake up and start buying some of these," he said as he displayed a semi-automatic rifle. "Things are real bad, and they're going to get a lot worse."

The 1990s saw the rise and fall of the virulently antigovernment "Patriot" movement, made up of paramilitary militias, tax defiers and so-called "sovereign citizens." Sparked by a combination of anger at the federal government and the deaths of political dissenters at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and Waco, Texas, the movement took off in the middle of the decade and continued to grow even after 168 people were left dead by the 1995 bombing of Oklahoma City's federal building an attack, the deadliest ever by domestic U.S. terrorists, carried out by men steeped in the rhetoric and conspiracy theories of the militias. In the years that followed, a truly remarkable number of criminal plots came out of the movement. But by early this century, the Patriots had largely faded, weakened by systematic prosecutions, aversion to growing violence, and a new, highly conservative president.

They're back. Almost a decade after largely disappearing from public view, right-wing militias, ideologically driven tax defiers and sovereign citizens are appearing in large numbers around the country. "Paper terrorism" the use of property liens and citizens' "courts" to harass enemies is on the rise. And once-popular militia conspiracy theories are making the rounds again, this time accompanied by nativist theories about secret Mexican plans to "reconquer" the American Southwest. One law enforcement agency has found 50 new militia training groups one of them made up of present and former police officers and soldiers. Authorities around the country are reporting a worrying uptick in Patriot activities and propaganda. "This is the most significant growth we've seen in 10 to 12 years," says one. "All it's lacking is a spark. I think it's only a matter of time before you see threats and violence."

A key difference this time is that the federal government the entity that almost the entire radical right views as its primary enemy is headed by a black man. That, coupled with high levels of non-white immigration and a decline in the percentage of whites overall in America, has helped to racialize the Patriot movement, which in the past was not primarily motivated by race hate. One result has been a remarkable rash of domestic terror incidents since the presidential campaign, most of them related to anger over the election of Barack Obama. At the same time, ostensibly mainstream politicians and media pundits have helped to spread Patriot and related propaganda, from conspiracy theories about a secret network of U.S. concentration camps to wholly unsubstantiated claims about the president's country of birth.

Fifteen years ago, the Southern Poverty Law Center wrote then-Attorney General Janet Reno to warn about extremists in the militia movement, saying that the "mixture of armed groups and those who hate" was "a recipe for disaster." Just six months later, Oklahoma City's federal building was bombed. Today, the Patriot movement may not have the white-hot fury that it did in the 1990s. But the movement clearly is growing again, and Americans, in particular law enforcement officers, need to take the dangers it presents seriously. That is equally true for the politicians, pundits and preachers who, through pandering or ignorance, abet the growth of a movement marked by a proven predilection for violence.

Now, the real focus of this NPR piece was Graham's subsequent question concerning whether or not U.S. officials would have to Mirandize Osama bin Laden if he was captured:

GRAHAM: If bin Laden were caught tomorrow, would it be the position of this administration that he would be brought to justice?

HOLDER: He would certainly be brought to justice, absolutely.

GRAHAM: Where would you try him?

HOLDER: Well, we'd go through our protocol. And we'd make the determination about where he should appropriately be tried. [...]

GRAHAM: If we captured bin Laden tomorrow, would he be entitled to Miranda warnings at the moment of capture?

HOLDER: Again I'm not -- that all depends. I mean, the notion that we --

GRAHAM: Well, it does not depend. If you're going to prosecute anybody in civilian court, our law is clear that the moment custodial interrogation occurs the defendant, the criminal defendant, is entitled to a lawyer and to be informed of their right to remain silent.

The big problem I have is that you're criminalizing the war, that if we caught bin Laden tomorrow, we'd have mixed theories and we couldn't turn him over -- to the CIA, the FBI or military intelligence -- for an interrogation on the battlefield, because now we're saying that he is subject to criminal court in the United States. And you're confusing the people fighting this war.

Much as what NPR did with its piece, this bin Laden segment will likely get a lot of attention from the media in the next 24 hours, as it certainly should.

How they report Holder being stumped by the earlier question will be very interesting to see.

Instead of taking a few of Cassidy's sentences out of context, let's read the WHOLE article and then discuss. The gist of it is that this writer has some serious misgivings about the current health care bill, but still understands why it's necessary.

Too bad this bill couldn't be stalled while a better plan is put forward by someone else (the Republicans?) Hmmm, why did the Republicans drag their feet on this issue? I believe it's because they wanted to stop all reform. Many are too short-sighted to see or care about how the current system is harming middle-class Americans. They did nothing to enact appropriate regulations on the industry where they had all the power. And now that reform seems to be imminent, they will fight to stop it, and have finally cooked up an alternative plan. A little too late, I'd say.

With the publication of H.R. 3962, the House Democrats mammoth, 1,990-page proposal to restructure the health-care system (the outlines of which can be found in this detailed summary), decision time is fast approaching in the big reform debate. Paul Krugman, in his usual forthright style, says, History is about to be madeand everyone has to decide which side theyre on. Democrats and progressives can line up behind the reform legislation that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi put forward last week, or they can help to kill reform for another generation by aligning with hard-line conservatives.

As political analysis, theres something to be said for Krugmans Manichean view of the world. But Krugman is also an economista very good oneand the economics of what is proposed bear inspection. The President is on the verge of fulfilling his campaign pledge to extend health-care coverage to many of the uninsured. He is doing this, however, not by transforming the existing system of private insurance, which gave rise to many of the current problems, but by extending it. The White House has reached a deal with the big health insurers, such as Aetna and CIGNA. In return for the industrys agreeing to cover people with prexisting health conditions, and making various other more minor concessions, the government will force more than twenty million new customers into its arms.

I regard an expansion of the government safety net as ethically essential, economically justified, and long overdue. It is indefensible for a country as rich as the United States to fail to provide adequate health care for many of its citizens. In extending our health-care system, all we are doing is catching up with Otto Von Bismarcks Germany, which recognized a hundred and twenty-five years ago that universal health and disability coverage, along with old age pensions and a system of public education, were essential elements of a modern society. Moreover, given the reluctance of Blue Dog Democrats, such as Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson, to support anything that smacks of big government, and President Obamas determination to coperate with moderate Republicans, the proposed reform may be the most that can be accomplished today. But we will be dealing with its consequences for decades to come, and I think its important to be clear about what the reform amounts to.

Lets remind ourselves of the basics. There are two big (and linked) problems with the current health-care system. It excludes 46.3 million Americans, according to the Census Bureau, and it is inordinately expensive. The proposed reform purports to tackle both of these problems; in fact, it only addresses the first one in any systematic manner. The future cost savings that the Administration and its congressional allies are promising to deliver are based on wishful thinking and sleight of hand. Over time, the reform, as proposed, would almost certainly add substantially to the budget deficit, thereby worsening the long-term fiscal crisis that the country faces. Financing this measure alone wouldnt break the U.S. Treasury. Other elements of the fiscal picture, such as the looming increases in interest payments on the national debt and an explosive growth in Medicare spending as the baby boomers retireare far larger. But the numbers involved in health-care reform are still significantperhaps one per cent of annual G.D.P.

The Pelosi bill, in particular, wouldnt do much, if anything, to address the overall escalation in health-care costs, much of which is rooted in the nature of insurance, where individuals consume costly health services, and different peoplethe other members of their risk poolpay for them. This is the moral hazard problem that the economist Kenneth Arrow identified as long ago as 1963. (For an easy-to-understand account of Arrows argument, see this riveting new book on market failure.) In the past twenty years, many ideas have been tried in the effort to restrict the growth of spending within a private insurance system, the most notable of which was the creation of H.M.O.s. Some have enjoyed temporary success. None have worked for long.

If you read through the briefing papers provided by the House Ways and Means Committee, the fiscal implications of the proposed reform are pretty obvious. Under the proposed legislation, people whose employers dont offer health coverage will receive affordability credits that fall with income, tapering off at about eighty-five thousand dollars a year. A lower-middle-class family of four earning, say, forty-five thousand dollars a year would be entitled to a subsidy of, say, seventy-five hundred dollars a year, to enable them to buy a basic health insurance plan that would cost them, say, eleven thousand dollars a year on the proposed Health Insurance Exchange, These estimates are based on a table on page 3 of the summary document I referred to earlier, which says that families that earn between two hundred and two hundred and fifty per cent of the federal poverty level would have to pay a maximum of eight per cent of their income in insurance premiums. Some poorer families that couldnt afford to buy coverage even with the generous new tax breaks and subsidies would become eligible for an expanded Medicaid program. Individuals and families that failed to obtain coverage despite these inducements would be subject to a fine of seven hundred and fifty dollars for each uninsured adult.

By any standards, the subsidies in the plan are big ones. For example, they dwarf the Earned Income Tax Credits for poor and middle-income working families, which have been steadily expanded since George H. W. Bush first introduced them. From an egalitarian perspective, the establishment of these generous subsidies would be an important moment in U.S. history. But two practical questions immediately arise. Who would police the new system, and how much would it cost?

The answer to the first question is the Internal Revenue Service. If you couldnt prove to the I.R.S. that you hadnt obtained coverage, it would add the seven-hundred-and-fifty-dollar fine to your tax bill. A healthy, single, self-employed person in his twenties would have the choice of buying an individual insurance plan for, say, five to six thousand dollars a year (considerably less than that if he were eligible for a subsidy) or paying the fine. Undoubtedly, some people will choose to pay the fine and go uninsured. According to a Congressional Budget Office analysis of Pelosis plan, in 2019 there would still be about eighteen million uninsured adults. (In percentage terms, the share of legal nonelderly Americans with health coverage would rise from about eighty-three per cent today to about ninety-six per cent.)

According to the C.B.O., in summary, many more people will, with government assistance, buy private insurance coverage (some twenty-one million) and many others (about fifteen million) will become newly eligible for Medicaid, which is wholly financed by the taxpayer. Surely, this will cost considerable sums of money and add to the deficit. Or will it? The Democrat-controlled C.B.O. says that the Pelosi plan will actually reduce the deficit by a hundred and four billion dollars between 2010 and 2019, thereby satisfying President Obamas claim that the reform will be deficit neutral. Furthermore, the C.B.O. suggests that the legislations impact on the deficit will continue to be negative in the following decade, from 2019 to 2029. I wish I could believe these figures, but I dont.

Two large items underpin the Administrations math: five hundred and seventy-two billion dollars of tax increases over ten years, and roughly the same amount of cost savings on Medicare and other existing government health programs. Most of the revenue increase would come from levying a 5.4 per cent surcharge on Americans individuals who earn more than five hundred thousand dollars a year and joint filers that earn more than a million dollars. I am a big supporter of progressive taxation, but at some point it becomes politically unsustainable. If health-care reform goes through, and the Bush tax cuts expire in 2011, top earners will face a marginal tax rate of forty-five per cent at the federal level. Add in state and local taxes, plus Social Security and Medicare payments, and wealthy people in New York, say, would be facing tax rates of about sixty per cent. As sure as night follows day, this would generate more tax evasion and a political backlash. Without a doubt, the next Republican-controlled Congress would reverse the changes.

If it decides to forgo soaking the rich, the Administration could return to its earlier proposal, which was included in a Senate Finance Committee bill that Senator Max Baucus put forward, to tax firms that provide their employees with costly Cadillac health-care plans. A policy such as this is probably the number one item that health economists across the ideological spectrum believe is likely to stem the explosion of health-care costs, Christine Romer, the chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said in a recent speech. But this idea wouldnt work politically, either. To raise enough revenue, the tax on swanky insurance plans would have to be set as high as forty per cent. When labor unions, some of whose members enjoy coverage in these plans, learned about this punitive levy they objected loudly, prompting Pelosi to drop the idea, which, broadly speaking, amounts to taxing the upper middle class to provide benefits for the lower middle class.

What about the proposed cost savings? They, too, are questionable. Most of them consist of reductions in Medicare outlays, which, according to this C.B.O. analysis, would save four hundred and twenty-six billion dollars between 2010 and 2019 compared with current plans. Look a bit more closely, and you find that more than half of the Medicare savings (two hundred and twenty-nine billion dollars) come from cutting payments to providers of services under the regular program; most of the rest (a hundred and seventy billion dollars) come from changing the way payments are set in the Medicare Advantage program. Does anybody really believe that these savings will materialize? For decades now, Congress has been promising to reduce the growth of Medicare outlays, and yet every year they continue to go up. The reasons are straightforward: the population is aging; seniors are politically active; and health-care treatments, particularly for the aging, continue to evolve in complex and costly ways.

To be fair, contained in its reform plan, the White House does have a proposal to address these issues: the establishment of an Independent Medicare Advisory Council (IMAC), which would provide Congress each year with cost-saving recommendations. By removing some of the political pressure around such reforms, Romer said in the same speech, the IMAC would make it easier for improvements to be made year after year. This statement can only be described as wishful thinking. I hope it will be proved right, but Washington is replete with now-defunct independent bodies and commissions that toiled dutifully, did good work, and made little difference.

So what does it all add up to? The U.S. government is making a costly and open-ended commitment to help provide health coverage for the vast majority of its citizens. I support this commitment, and I think the federal governments spending priorities should be altered to make it happen. But lets not pretend that it isnt a big deal, or that it will be self-financing, or that it will work out exactly as planned. It wont.

Many Democratic insiders know all this, or most of it. What is really unfolding, I suspect, is the scenario that many conservatives feared. The Obama Administration, like the Bush Administration before it (and many other Administrations before that) is creating a new entitlement program, which, once established, will be virtually impossible to rescind. At some point in the future, the fiscal consequences of the reform will have to be dealt with in a more meaningful way, but by then the principle of (near) universal coverage will be well established. Even a twenty-first-century Ronald Reagan will have great difficult overturning it.

That takes me back to where I began. Both in terms of the political calculus of the Democratic Party, and in terms of making the United States a more equitable society, expanding health-care coverage now and worrying later about its long-term consequences is an eminently defensible strategy. Putting on my amateur historians cap, I might even claim that some subterfuge is historically necessary to get great reforms enacted. But as an economics reporter and commentator, I feel obliged to put on my green eyeshade and count the dollars.

Confessions of an ObamaCare Backer (liberal explains the political calculus)



The typical argument for ObamaCare is that it will offer better medical care for everyone and cost less to do it, but occasionally a supporter lets the mask slip and reveals the real political motivation. So let's give credit to John Cassidy, part of the left-wing stable at the New Yorker, who wrote last week on its Web site that "it's important to be clear about what the reform amounts to."

Mr. Cassidy is more honest than the politicians whose dishonesty he supports. "The U.S. government is making a costly and open-ended commitment," he writes. "Let's not pretend that it isn't a big deal, or that it will be self-financing, or that it will work out exactly as planned. It won't. What is really unfolding, I suspect, is the scenario that many conservatives feared. The Obama Administration . . . is creating a new entitlement program, which, once established, will be virtually impossible to rescind."

Why are they doing it? Because, according to Mr. Cassidy, ObamaCare serves the twin goals of "making the United States a more equitable country" and furthering the Democrats' "political calculus." In other words, the purpose is to further redistribute income by putting health care further under government control, and in the process making the middle class more dependent on government. As the party of government, Democrats will benefit over the long run.

This explains why Nancy Pelosi is willing to risk the seats of so many Blue Dog Democrats by forcing such an unpopular bill through Congress on a narrow, partisan vote: You have to break a few eggs to make a permanent welfare state. As Mr. Cassidy concludes, "Putting on my amateur historian's cap, I might even claim that some subterfuge is historically necessary to get great reforms enacted."

No wonder many Americans are upset. They know they are being lied to about ObamaCare, and they know they are going to be stuck with the bill.

A time when the American collective consciousness banded together under a single unification of thought-Revenge!

Barack Hussein Obama; a President that will go down in history as having caused the most widespread segregationist movement to ever hit the shores of America. No President, ever, in the history of the United States has created such an immense outpouring of hatred, and worship at the same time.

His supporters are quick to point out their god-like worship of him, and his critics are just as quick in pointing out their utter revulsion of him. But no one can argue the fact the he was voted into office in a landslide election. An election that saw a historical number of people voting for the first time in their lives. But perhaps, in the final analysis history will once again show that Barack Hussein Obama , like other unpopular Presidents, wasnt such a good choice after all.

President Obama came into prominence at a time when the country desperately needed change. His campaign promises created an air of confidence that allowed Americans to breathe a sigh of relief-promising to institute changes at all levels of the government, and to transform it into a vessel of democracy and accountability.

Today we are seeing first hand that it was pure unadulterated rhetoric. His much touted Government Reform resulted in enactment of draconian laws and regulations that further eroded civil rights-giving more power to the greedy corporate entities.

Within months of his election the nation went into a panic mode-especially gun owners, civil rights advocates, as well as organized pro-constitutional groups. America experienced a mammoth resurgence of a militia, survivalist, and civil rights groups. Some of the groups claiming to have attracted and recruited well over a million people since Barack Obama took office in January 2009. Groups that soon flooded the internet with conspiracy theories, reports of obvious violations of Americans constitutional rights, as well as the invasive militaristic undertones emanating from within the Whitehouse itself.

Firearms manufactures and ammunition retailers soon found themselves besieged by distressed and frightened customers, many of whom were snapping up weapons and ammo like it was the end of the world. Even today this trend continues, people that have never owned a firearm before, are purchasing weapons in what many feel will be resultant of Barack Obamas brave new world-the elimination of all privately owned firearms. Americas people are afraid-scarred that the rumors swirling across the electrons of cyberspace are coming true. Rumors that persist across a wide range of websites warning of the looming specter of United Nations troops conducting gun confiscation sweeps in Americas neighborhoods. Other websites exhort that the federal Government has constructed several FEMA camps-facilities that are purported to be future locations that will imprison dissenters of the Obama administration. There are rumors of FEMA stockpiling thousands of coffins at various locations, and that military bases will be used as temporary internment centers for those citizens that refuse inoculations for the H1N1 virus.

No matter what one believes relative to the objectives of these groups-there remains the single fact that people are worried about President Obama and those appointees that he has placed into his administration. Obamas transparency movement has in fact awakened a sense of awareness-while at the same time creating a sense of utter distrust.

In nearly every state, most major cities, and even in the small agricultural areas, there are home grown militia units starting to rise up vehemently voicing their concerns. Many are actively preparing for a violent confrontation with the government. This fear was tested when the Obama administration allowed the Posse Comitatus Act to be tossed aside, and began utilizing active duty Military troops for civil disturbances, as was the case during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

The police Chief of New Orleans ordered that all private firearms be seized from legal gun owners, and with the help of his police officers, federal contractors and active duty military troops-conducted a military operation against the very citizens these law enforcement services were sworn to protect and serve. A move that was seen as the first shot across the bow, and one that raised the consciousness of every gun owner in the United States. What followed shortly thereafter is a direct result of that unconstitutional action.

Barack Obama did little to assuage the already anxiousness of Americans when he was asked his view regarding Gun Control-His reply that he supported gun owners rights in having Hunting Rifles sent an immediate shock wave hurtling across America. That one statement alone instantaneously foreshadowed what many had been prophesying all along-that President Obama was going to take away the rights to private ownership of firearms, and through a system of intrusive, and increasingly militarist policies, transform America into a socialist, if not communist-New World Order.

I kid you not.

Apparently, Rep. John Culberson of Texas' 7th Congressional District has written a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, "urging" her to persuade the U.K to remove Savage from its list of banned people.

You will recall that former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith placed Savage on the list, part of which was released in May, because, she said, she was concerned that his opinions and past statements might incite Britain's Muslim population.

Savage has sued for defamation, and regularly hits his listeners up for money for the suit, even though he reportedly makes $10 million a year through his nationally syndicated radio program.

In his letter, Culberson says the reason Savage "needs" to go to Great Britain is because he must tend to the "rare plant specimens" he deposited in Kew Gardens in 1969. (You remember 1969. There was a war going on, but some able-bodied men spent their time prancing around the Fiji Islands picking plants and communing with the natives.)

"They are a world-class collection of rare medicinal plant specimens from Fiji and Tonga," Culberson said in his letter. "Dr. Savage needs to visit London for his scientific research, but he is unable to do so because of the Home Secretary's travel ban."

Culberson says in the letter that "in the weeks ahead," he will work with other members of Congress "to help protect Dr. Savage's First Amendment rights, and his ability to travel freely to Great Britain."

So that's the story now, Savage has to do scientific research?? Are you kidding me?

Why is it that in the six months since this story broke and Savage has been whining about being kept out of the UK, we have never, NEVER, heard that he needs to continue his "scientific research?" And how long has it been since he last did any scientific research, anyway?

Why have we not heard anything about research until now? Because it's bull, that's why.

I wrote to Kew Gardens several weeks ago, asking the keeper of the collections about Savage's (Michael Weiner, as he was known then) collection. I was told they couldn't find any reference to him or his collection. It was suggested that I provide them with some specimen names, as that might help in the search.

So much for the "world-class rare medicinal specimens," as Culberson's letter claims. They're so important, that Kew Gardens has relegated them to the dust bins.

But it seems even Rep. Culberson can't keep his story straight. Does Savage need to go to London to tend to his plants, or is the issue that his First Amendment rights have been compromised?

Last time I checked, Great Britain wasn't bound by the US Constitution. And just how have Savage's First Amendment rights been abridged? He still has the third-largest radio show in the US, he still writes books, he's still on the Internet, and his show can be heard via that Internet all over the world.

So tell us, Savage, what's the damage? What message are you not able to get out there?

And I have to say, for a US Congressman to complain about a foreign country exercising control over its borders -- one of the very things he compliments Savage for advancing in this country -- is the height of hypocrisy. The US also has a list of banned people. Will Culberson and whatever member of Congress joins him in this crusade also call for the trashing of that list?

He has to tend to his plant collection. Oh Myrtle.

Liberalism has been called a mental disorder in some quarters. That label appears appropriate when one considers liberal thinking on several current issues:

  • Rising gasoline prices are devastating to working-class Americans, but protecting obscure organisms at the bottom of the food chain is of greater concern. Which is why drilling for oil & adding refining capacity are unacceptable.



  • Large profits are obscenely un-American, except when it comes to George Soros, Oprah Winfrey, Hollywood stars and other liberals.



  • Driving without a license is illegal; thus,illegal aliens should be licensed to avoid breaking the law.



  • The earning power of the average American family is in serious decline, but the US should grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens who will work for lower wages and no benefits, thereby driving wages into further decline.



  • Killing the sale of port security to UAE was necessary to protect home land security, but closing the borders with Mexico would unfairly “scapegoat” Hispanics.



  • Bilingualism is essential in a tolerant, diverse society, except when it comes to requiring Hispanics to speak English. In that case, it becomes racism.



  • Conservatives who work to preserve American culture and tradition are hate mongers. But immigrants from other nations/cultures must be encouraged to retain their ‘cultural identity’ at all costs.



  • Execution of a convicted killer is cruel, unusual & barbaric; whereas a woman’s right to abort the life of an innocent child is inalienable.



  • Starving an innocent, helpless victim like Terri Schaivo to death is fine, whereas using lethal injection to end the life of a brutal killer is not OK.



  • Invading a foreign nation is wrong, except when illegal immigrants from Mexico and other Latin nations invade America.



  • Discrimination based on race or gender is wrong. Except when waged against Caucasian men, in which case it is mandated by law & called Affirmative Action.



  • Masculinity & all things male are the source of all evil, whereas feminism is liberating & spiritual in nature. Jesus was probably female, truth be known.



  • Freedom of speech must never be repressed, except when “hurtful” to any constituency of the Democrat party.



  • Tax cuts are wrong if it means returning money to the people who actually paid taxes, but perfectly fine when sent to those who paid none.



  • Christmas, the Holy Bible & other symbols of Christianity must be quashed so as to offend no one; whereas, Ramadan, the Koran & symbols of Islam must be heavily promoted in the name of religious tolerance.



  • Businesses are oppressive, fascist institutions that must not be allowed to grow too large. On the other hand, big government, when run by Democrats, creates wealth & happiness & is very desirable.



  • Military force must never be used, except when absolutely needed to advance interests not vital to the US, or to obscure a Democrat president’s sexual misconduct in the Oval Office.



Can there be any doubt that the fog of liberalism is indeed a mental disorder?

It cannot be said often enough that the chief of staff of the United States Army, Gen. George Casey, responded to a massacre of 13 Americans in which the suspect is a Muslim by saying: "Our diversity ... is a strength."

As long as the general has brought it up: Never in recorded history has diversity been anything but a problem. Look at Ireland with its Protestant and Catholic populations, Canada with its French and English populations, Israel with its Jewish and Palestinian populations.

Or consider the warring factions in India, Sri Lanka, China, Iraq, Czechoslovakia (until it happily split up), the Balkans and Chechnya. Also look at the festering hotbeds of tribal warfare -- I mean the beautiful mosaics -- in Third World hellholes like Afghanistan, Rwanda and South Central, L.A.


"Diversity" is a difficulty to be overcome, not an advantage to be sought. True, America does a better job than most at accommodating a diverse population. We also do a better job at curing cancer and containing pollution. But no one goes around mindlessly exclaiming: "Cancer is a strength!" "Pollution is our greatest asset!"

By contrast, the canard "diversity is a strength" has now replaced "at the end of the day," "skin in the game," "blood and treasure," "jumped the shark," "boots on the ground," "horrific" (whatever happened to the perfectly good word "horrible"?), "not so much," "I am shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on here," and "that went well," as America's most irritating cliche.

We should start making up other nonsense mantras along the lines of "diversity is a strength" and mindlessly repeating them until they catch on, too.

Next time you're at a cocktail party, just start saying, "Chocolate pudding is dramatic irony" from time to time. Eventually other people will start saying it, without anyone bothering to consider whether it makes sense. Then we'll do another one: "Nicolas Cage is a two-cycle engine."

Before you know it, liberals will react to news of a mass murder by muttering, "Well, you know what they say: Nicolas Cage is a two-cycle engine," while everyone nods in agreement.

Except mere nonsense makes more sense than "diversity is a strength."

If Gen. Casey's wildly inappropriate use of this lunatic cliche in the aftermath of the Fort Hood massacre doesn't kill it, nothing will.

Among the worst aspects of America's "diversity" is that liberals' reaction to a heterogeneous population is to create a pecking order based on alleged victimhood -- as described in electrifying detail in my book, Guilty: Liberal 'Victims' and Their Assault on America.

In modern America, the guilty are sanctified, while the innocent never stop paying -- including with their lives, as they did at Fort Hood last week. Points are awarded to aspiring victims for angry self-righteousness, acts of violence and general unpleasantness.

But liberals celebrate diversity only in the case of superficial characteristics like race, gender, sexual preference and country of origin. They reject diversity when we need it, such as in "diversity" of legal forums.

After conferring with everyone at Zabar's, Obama decided that if a standard civilian trial is good enough for Martha Stewart, then it's good enough for the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks. So Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is coming to New York!

Mohammed's military tribunal was already under way when Obama came into office, stopped the proceedings and, eight months later, announced that Mohammed would be tried in a federal court in New York.

In a liberal's reckoning, diversity is good when we have both Muslim jihadists and patriotic Americans serving in the U.S. military. But diversity is bad when Martha Stewart and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed are subjected to different legal tribunals to adjudicate their transgressions.

Terrorists tried in civilian courts will be entitled to the whole panoply of legal protections accorded Stewart or any American charged with a crime, such as the presumption of innocence, the right to a fair trial, the right to exclude evidence obtained in violation of Miranda rights, the right to a speedy trial, the right to confront one's accusers, the right to a change of venue, the right to examine the evidence against you, and the right to subpoena witnesses and evidence in one's defense.

Members of Congress have it in their power to put an end to this lunacy right now. If they don't, they are as complicit in Mohammed's civilian trial as the president. Article I, Section 8, and Article III, Section 1 of the Constitution give Congress the power to establish the jurisdiction of the lower federal courts and to create exceptions to that jurisdiction.

Congress could pass a statute limiting federal court jurisdiction to individuals not subject to trial before a military tribunal. Any legislator who votes "nay" on a such a bill will be voting to give foreign terrorists the same legal rights as U.S. citizens -- and more legal rights than members of the U.S. military are entitled to.

In the case of legal proceedings, diversity actually is a strength.

It is protest day, for the Left and the Right, on Capitol Hill.

First out of the gate - 9 Protesters backing a universal health care system briefly occupied Sen. Joe Lieberman's office this morning.

Protesters were arrested, one by one, and dragged out of his office amid chants of "Everyone in and noone out, universal healthcare now!" and "Represent Connecticut, not AETNA!"

The whole affair, from occupation to final arrest, lasted 40 minutes.

Lieberman, the Connecticut Independent, has said he will join Republicans to filibuster a Democractic health bill if it contains a public health insurance option to operate alongside the private insurance market.

According to the U.S. Capitol Police, officers arrested nine protesters in Sen. Joe Liebermans office just after 10 a.m. today inside the Hart Senate Office Building.

The demonstrators insisted on disrupting office operations after they rejected repeated offers for meetings with both the senators chief of staff and legislative director to discuss their concerns, Marshall Wittmann, a Lieberman spokesman, said in a statement.

After rejecting these meeting offers, refusing to heed warnings from the Capitol Hill police and continuing the disruption, some of the demonstrators were removed by the police.

In a statement, Capitol Police said the nine were arrested without incident and there have been no other arrests today.

Roll Call, the Capitol Hill newspaper, reports that the protesters were members of Code Pink, a liberal group, and that the protest was over health care. Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, has said he opposes a public option in the health care bill and would join Republicans in a filibuster to prevent the bill from going to a floor vote.

Code Pink was not available for an immediate comment.

Updated at 3:44 p.m. ET: Capitol Hill Police arrested 10 more demonstrators outside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's congressional office in the Cannon House Office Building, according to Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

Demonstrators for and against the health care legislation faced off in the hallway, ABC reports, and left the hallway littered with shredded pages from the bill.

Updated at 4:32 p.m. ET: According to Lacy MacAuley, national media coordinator for Mobilization for Health Care for All, her organization sponsored this mornings protest at Sen. Liebermans office. The group's website says that Kai Newkirk, the group's national coordinator, was among those arrested.

MacAuley says the organization was protesting the fact that Lieberman is willing to block a public option, but accepts money from insurance lobbyists.

This recent post was about the guys who post pictures. Haven't seen any equally ridiculous liberal versions of these images, except the one who posts Ann Coulter's pics, with Ann's actual words. I'd be upset with him if he photoshopped Coulter's head in an inappropriate scene, or showed her decapitated head lying on the ground. But the pictures of her weren't even that bad.

Most of the truly ignorant writing and pictures posted here are from the conservative camp. You can't deny that. But I said "some conservatives" in my post. Not "all".

One of the causes of the American Revolution was the use of writs of assistance, which were essentially warrantless searches because there was no requirement of a showing of probable cause to a judge, and the first fiery embers of American resistance were born in opposition to those infamous writs. The Founders considered all warrantless searches to be unreasonable and egregious. It was to prevent a repeat of such violations of the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects that the Fourth Amendment was written.

We expect that sweeping warrantless searches of homes and vehicles, under some pretext, will be the means used to attempt to disarm the people.

3. We will NOT obey any order to detain American citizens as unlawful enemy combatants or to subject them to trial by military tribunal.

One of the causes of the American Revolution was the denial of the right to jury trial, the use of admiralty courts (military tribunals) instead, and the application of the laws of war to the colonists. After that experience, and being well aware of the infamous Star Chamber in English history, the Founders ensured that the international laws of war would apply only to foreign enemies, not to the American people. Thus, the Article III Treason Clause establishes the only constitutional form of trial for an American, not serving in the military, who is accused of making war on his own nation. Such a trial for treason must be before a civilian jury, not a tribunal.

The international laws of war do not trump our Bill of Rights. We reject as illegitimate any such claimed power, as did the Supreme Court in Ex Parte Milligan (1865). Any attempt to apply the laws of war to American civilians, under any pretext, such as against domestic militia groups the government brands domestic terrorists, is an act of war and an act of treason.

4. We will NOT obey orders to impose martial law or a state of emergency on a state, or to enter with force into a state, without the express consent and invitation of that states legislature and governor.

One of the causes of the American Revolution was the attempt to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power by disbanding the Massachusetts legislature and appointing General Gage as military governor. The attempt to disarm the people of Massachusetts during that martial law sparked our Revolution. Accordingly, the power to impose martial law the absolute rule over the people by a military officer with his will alone being law is nowhere enumerated in our Constitution.

Further, it is the militia of a state and of the several states that the Constitution contemplates being used in any context, during any emergency within a state, not the standing army.

The imposition of martial law by the national government over a state and its people, treating them as an occupied enemy nation, is an act of war. Such an attempted suspension of the Constitution and Bill of Rights voids the compact with the states and with the people.

5. We will NOT obey orders to invade and subjugate any state that asserts its sovereignty and declares the national government to be in violation of the compact by which that state entered the Union.

In response to the obscene growth of federal power and to the absurdly totalitarian claimed powers of the Executive, upwards of 20 states are considering, have considered, or have passed courageous resolutions affirming states rights and sovereignty.

Those resolutions follow in the honored and revered footsteps of Jefferson and Madison in their Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, and likewise seek to enforce the Constitution by affirming the very same principles of our Declaration, Constitution, and Bill of Rights that we Oath Keepers recognize and affirm.

Chief among those principles is that ours is a dual sovereignty system, with the people of each state retaining all powers not granted to the national government they created, and thus the people of each state reserved to themselves the right to judge when the national government they created has voided the compact between the states by asserting powers never granted.

Upon the declaration by a state that such a breach has occurred, we will not obey orders to force that state to submit to the national government.

6. We will NOT obey any order to blockade American cities, thus turning them into giant concentration camps.

One of the causes of the American Revolution was the blockade of Boston, and the occupying of that city by the British military, under martial law. Once hostilities began, the people of Boston were tricked into turning in their arms in exchange for safe passage, but were then forbidden to leave. That confinement of the residents of an entire city was an act of war.

Such tactics were repeated by the Nazis in the Warsaw Ghetto, and by the Imperial Japanese in Nanking, turning entire cities into death camps. Any such order to disarm and confine the people of an American city will be an act of war and thus an act of treason.

7. We will NOT obey any order to force American citizens into any form of detention camps under any pretext.

Mass, forced internment into concentration camps was a hallmark of every fascist and communist dictatorship in the 20th Century. Such internment was unfortunately even used against American citizens of Japanese descent during World War II. Whenever a government interns its own people, it treats them like an occupied enemy population. Oppressive governments often use the internment of women and children to break the will of the men fighting for their liberty as was done to the Boers, to the Jewish resisters in the Warsaw Ghetto, and to the Chechens, for example.


Such a vile order to forcibly intern Americans without charges or trial would be an act of war against the American people, and thus an act of treason, regardless of the pretext used. We will not commit treason, nor will we facilitate or support it.NOT on Our Watch!

8. We will NOT obey orders to assist or support the use of any foreign troops on U.S. soil against the American people to keep the peace or to maintain control during any emergency, or under any other pretext. We will consider such use of foreign troops against our people to be an invasion and an act of war.

During the American Revolution, the British government enlisted the aid of Hessian mercenaries in an attempt to subjugate the rebellious American people. Throughout history, repressive regimes have enlisted the aid of foreign troops and mercenaries who have no bonds with the people.

Accordingly, as the militia of the several states are the only military force contemplated by the Constitution, in Article I, Section 8, for domestic keeping of the peace, and as the use of even our own standing army for such purposes is without such constitutional support, the use of foreign troops and mercenaries against the people is wildly unconstitutional, egregious, and an act of war.

We will oppose such troops as enemies of the people and we will treat all who request, invite, and aid those foreign troops as the traitors they are.

9. We will NOT obey any orders to confiscate the property of the American people, including food and other essential supplies, under any emergency pretext whatsoever.

One of the causes of the American Revolution was the seizure and forfeiture of American ships, goods, and supplies, along with the seizure of American timber for the Royal Navy, all in violation of the peoples natural right to their property and to the fruits of their labor. The final spark of the Revolution was the attempt by the government to seize powder and cannon stores at Concord.

Deprivation of food has long been a weapon of war and oppression, with millions intentionally starved to death by fascist and communist governments in the 20th Century alone.

Accordingly, we will not obey or facilitate orders to confiscate food and other essential supplies from the people, and we will consider all those who issue or carry out such orders to be the enemies of the people.

10. We will NOT obey any orders which infringe on the right of the people to free speech, to peaceably assemble, and to petition their government for a redress of grievances.

There would have been no American Revolution without fiery speakers and writers such as James Otis, Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, and Sam Adams setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.

Tyrants know that the pen of a man such as Thomas Paine can cause them more damage than entire armies, and thus they always seek to suppress the natural rights of speech, association, and assembly. Without freedom of speech, the people will have no recourse but to arms. Without freedom of speech and conscience, there is no freedom.
Therefore, we will not obey or support any orders to suppress or violate the right of the people to speak, associate, worship, assemble, communicate, or petition government for the redress of grievances.

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually affirm our oath and pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor. Oath Keepers

The above list is not exhaustive but we do consider them to be clear tripwires they form our line in the sand, and if we receive such orders, we will not obey them. Further, we will know that the time for another American Revolution is nigh. If you the people decide that you have no recourse, and such a revolution comes, at that time, not only will we NOT fire upon our fellow Americans who righteously resist such egregious violations of their God given rights, we will join them in fighting against those who dare attempt to enslave them.

President Obama, please encourage Congress and the states to NOT cut any more of the funding for education. So many of our citizens cannot spell or put together an intelligible sentence. Others describe their prejudice and other bizarre fantasies through pictures and comics. They think this is normal. Do we want the next generation to be this stupid? Of course not. We need more education, and we need children to be trained in critical thinking, starting from a young age. I taught my children how to be critical of TV commercials when they were in preschool. Once they got the hang of that, they had a foundation to build on, and, as they grow older, I teach them not to believe everything they read in a spam email, on the internet, or that a stranger tells them. They know how to take in info at face value, but then to evaluate it for truthfulness before including it in their belief system.

I wish more craigslisters were like my children. I wish America didn't have so many people who are dumb enough to fall for propaganda like death panels, and other bizarre ideas they get from the internet, radio, and TV.

We have been over this before, take your head out of your ass Liberace and look at the facts. Illegal immigration has many negative effects in your community and across the country. Wages and working conditions are harmed for people trying to earn a living; hospitals close due to illegal aliens use scarce health care dollars; schools are overcrowded as more people arrive every year. Having a wink-and-nod approach to illegal immigration hasn't made the problem any better - instead its gotten worse over the last eight years. It is the governments responsibility to enforce immigration laws. The failure to enforce our laws is the problem shit for brains. This would be a non issue if our laws were enforced.

What has Obama done to punish employers or tighten border security? NADA! In fact he has halted the border fence work and minimized the work ICE and INS can do.
