Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center (Reinstein Woods) has an immediate opening for an AmeriCorps volunteer to serve a minimum of one year. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 17 and 25 years old. AmeriCorps offers a $438.46 biweekly stipend, healthcare and childcare benefits, and an education award of $4725 that can be used for past or future education expenses (up to seven years after AmeriCorps service is completed). To be eligible for the education award, the volunteer must work a minimum of 1700 hours. The position begins November 30, however initial working hours can be modified to allow completion of current college courses.

Reinstein Woods is located 9 miles from downtown Buffalo, NY and is operated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Reinstein Woods offers a range of dynamic environmental education programs to schools, youth organizations, teachers, community groups and the general public. Programs occur at the 292-acre Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve and at off-site locations.

The AmeriCorps member will gain experience working in three major areas:

1) Reinstein Woods Education Programs:
Following training in environmental education methods, the member will assist with a variety of environmental education initiatives at Reinstein Woods. Projects may include:
Leading tours of the Woods for schools, scouts and the general public;
Coordinating Reinstein Woods’ participation in “Project Budburst” (see http://www.windows.ucar.edu/citizen_science/budburst/)
Developing a series of “Can You Find Me?” Guides for children to use when visiting the environmental education center;
Maintaining a database of teachers interested in attending environmental education workshops;
Performing “building duty” (greeting and orienting education center visitors, answering phones, registering program participants, etc.);
and Assisting with special events such as Earth Day.
DEC also will provide training in outreach methods, customer service, and safety and emergency procedures.

2) Invasive Species: The 292 acres of wetlands and forest at Reinstein Woods are being negatively impacted by invasive species and an overpopulation of deer. DEC has made some effort to control these impacts through plant removal and the construction of deer exclosures (fences that exclude deer to allow native plant regeneration). Working with staff and volunteers, the AmeriCorps member will:
research and plan appropriate methods for addressing certain invasive species; organize volunteers to assist in removal efforts;
and coordinate construction of additional deer exclosures by volunteers.

3) After School Conservation Club: The AmeriCorps member will assist the current Reinstein Woods AmeriCorps volunteer in implementing this program, which brings environmental education to urban elementary-aged children attending after-school programs.

Program Director for Global Partnership Schools

Global Partnership Schools is introducing SES programs at multiple elementary schools in Buffalo. SES programs are designed to provide additional instruction after school to increase the academic achievement of low income students attending Title I schools as identified as “in need of improvement” by the US Department of Education.

We need an effective educational leader to start up and maintain these programs. Duties include hiring and training tutors, recruiting students, starting / overseeing operations, and building strong relationships with stakeholders

This is a part-time position, 25 – 30 hours per week.
