Dixieland Jazz Band looking for musicians (Buffalo)

Hi everyone,

We're a group of young guys/girls (around age 23) that have been playing Dixieland music regularly for the past 4 years. Unfortunately, most of the band has moved away, but we want to recruit some new players and keep gigging. The people who are left are a clarinet, lead trumpet, and piano player. Here's what we need:

A drummer - that can possibly play washboard
A bass player
Preferably a banjo player/guitarist
2 more horns (cornet, sax, trombone)

Jazz experience is a must. Dixieland knowledge is helpful, but we can teach you everything you need to know.

This is a serious band that has connections into some of the local bars and studios... we are looking to do a couple of *PAID* gigs and then record a demo soon... only contact us if you are INTERESTED AND DEDICATED. I play bass. I'm looking for an original, HEAVY band, or some people who want to start one. I've been playing a long time, have good equipment, transportation, all that good stuff....I am influenced by so much and want to wrap it all into one tight, disgusting, sometimes beautiful package: Pantera, Lamb of God, Sabbath, Metallica, Opeth, Zeppelin, Exodus, Dream Theater, Into Eternity, Priest, Maiden, Mastodon, Wolfmother, Tool, Meshuggah etc. etc. etc.

I don't want to limit the songwriting into one genre. Obviously I want this to be an extremely heavy band, with a huge groove, but....maybe a few vocalists trade off and on....Maybe we write something stunningly gorgeous and acoustic...only to cave yer chest in with a crushing riff and some double bass.....or some 3 part harmonies in the middle of all the brutality. I guess I'm just trying to say let's write some cool heavy sh!t and see what happens. Thanks.

Hey everyone, my name is Mike. I am 23 years old and just moved up a couple months ago from Jamestown. I've been looking around for something musically to get into up here (one of the reasons I came up).

A bit about me:

I've been playing bass for about 6-7 years. I've played live "gigs" in various settings probably once a week for the last 5. I have my own gear, along with guitar gear. I'm actually a gear-head...but finances usually hold me back from spending my whole life savings on instruments.

I have a car and a job. I don't drink or do drugs or anything like that. I don't mind drinking but its not for me. One thing I DO NOT want to deal with is druggie band members, band members with ego problems, band members that insist on getting drunk (I only like to deal with people who drink in moderation), or band members that don't thoroughly enjoy what they're doing. I would much prefer getting into something with people my own age...but that's not a big deal. Genre-wise, I listen to just about everything...minus most metal, rap, pop, country. I have played and will continue to play anything that interests me. Right now though I'm looking for something along the lines of Indie, Rock, or Folk-Rock type stuff. Something creative, possibly unique...and fun. The irony for me is I find seriousness about playing in the fun of playing. If it makes me smile being at practice and shows, then I'm into it. I think that sums up what I wanna do.

I'm a 32 yr. old bass player that's been playing for awhile. I am currently looking to join/ start some kind of band. I would love or prefer a 3 pc., but I won't be picky. I can play anything and am used to being in 3 pcs. and filling up the space. I have a excellent musical sense and am willing to take a shot at some vocals if necessary. My equipment is decent, just waiting for that right thing to come along before I invest in better gear. My influences are Widespread Panic, Gov't mule, Ben Folds, Weezer, and anything mainstream that was recorded before 2001. I can practice and jam after 8pm any night of the week, sometimes earlier if I'm off that day. (This feels way too much like a personal ad!!) I've long used the analogy that in a lot of ways, being in music groups is a lot like finding/dating a significant other. You have an initial period of infatuation with one's style of playing, you agree to form a band, you have ups and downs, and eventually break the whole thing off, and form a spite band with random other people just to show your ex bandmates that they were wrong for dumping you for the less talented bass player with the better gear. Sound familiar at all?

Anyways, what I'm looking for is a guitarist who is interested in playing coffee houses, open mics, staying primarily acoustic. Versatility is a plus, and multiple instruments is great too, if one of us decides to pick up a bass or conga for a tune or two. My influences include Dave Matthews, Matthew Good Band, Pete Yorn, The Band, Jim Croce (though I don't know any of his tunes), The Tragically Hip, and really just whatever makes me enjoy a particular moment in life. A memory of a certain song is created in an instant, and holds different weight in each individuals life for different reasons. I hope to someday instill that in audiences in the area. I'm not looking to really form anything terribly permanent unless it goes really well. (sound familiar again?) Drugs are drugs, just don't let it affect your performance, more importantly don't let chasing pussy get in the way of playing a show, moving gear, and your song selection.

I'm looking to show someone what I know, and learn from them as well. Come up with some original music if we mesh, and just play out! Acoustic gigs is not a cash cow by any means, but it depends on who you ask and where you go I guess. I am established in my little community of Lockport, and can get gigs here and there, but I'd really just like to meet a new musician with like-minded ideas and to be a mutual sounding board for those ideas. When we said "BIG DRUMS" we meant picture a battering ram juggernaut doppler sounding crude machinery of ancient powerful thudding tone, but it's a modern drumset we built. Then the guitars are walls of buzz, fuzz, fizz, sizzling squeeks, and ripping tearing FIRES, along with some enchanting actual bells & chimes played one of our members. The vocals are very "throaty" but alot of bass baritone. We don't want overly repetitious riffs or common cliches of the contemporary.

[MISC]:
And NO we don't want to go on stage wearing any "Ghostbusters uniforms" just because we like Ghostbusters themes or writings, NO WAY! And this doesn't mean we're gonna write about direct topics straight out of the films, come on!

I play bass. I'm looking for an original, HEAVY band, or some people who want to start one. Hi! My name is Bob and I've been playing guitar and writing songs off and on for about 8 years now. Since graduating college I've become more serious and dedicated to the craft. I am currently looking to get together with a few people and make some open-minded and experimental (but not trippy hippie) kinds of tunes. I enjoy all types of music, but particularly late 70's-80's new wave, jazz from the 50's 60's and 70's, college rock, 70's pop/soul, experimental, some indie pop/rock and a lot of blues and garage rock kind of stuff. I play guitar mainly, but also used to play trumpet in high school, and am somewhat proficient at playin bass and keyboard.

Major influences include Tom Waits, XTC, Gang of Four, Wire, Cecil Taylor, Captain Beefheart, Dismemberment Plan, Parliament, Frank Zappa, Todd Rundgren, and Richard Hell. Original Bands Wanted for Rage On The Stage !!!

After a brief one year hiatus, Night-Life is pleased to announce that Rage On The Stage is ready to roll.
The first show takes place on September 24, 2009.This year's battle of the bands event isbeing co-sponored
by ALLWNYRADIO.COM and will be held at the Evening Star Concert Hall, 8810 Niagara Falls Blvd.,
Niagara Falls, NY., every Thursday. This weekly event features three original music bands from all over WNY.
All shows will begin at 8pm. All three bands will play a 45 minute set that has to be mostly comprised of original
music. Each band will be judged by Four Criteria. No.1 - Musicianship; No.2 - Stage Presence; No.3 - Originality
and No.4 - Audience Participation. This is a battle where how well you play, look and act is just as important as
bringing the most fans. The Rage On The Stage will run for 17 weeks with semi-final rounds taking place in weeks

4(10/15), #8(11/12), #12(12/10), #16(1/28). The Finals will take place on February 5th with all four semi-final winners

The grand prize will be awarded at The Finals. The first place winner will receive a recording package from Select
Sound Recording Studio, 2315 Elmwood Ave. in Kenmore, NY (873-2717). The package consists of three days recording,
editing, packaging, and production with a value of $2000.00. The CD will be sent out to major record labels, be played on
ALLWNYRADIO.COM and receive a feature story in Night-Life Magazine. Second place is a $1000.00 Takamine Acoustic
/Electric Guitar from Music City located at 3236 Main St. in Buffalo. The Third place winner will receive $500 in prizes.And
Fourth place receives a $250 Video / Photo Package. Interested bands must be 18+ to play and sound and lights will be
provided. The Evening Star Concert Hall has one of the best sound systems and engineers in Leo McDonald

Hip Hop/Rap Live Venue??? (WNY/Buffalo)

I was wondering what venues in Buffalo have either played Hip hop/Rap acts in the past, or are open to the idea. The ArtVoice seems to be rather dead in terms of hiphop/rap acts.

I am a partner of an upcoming label, and I'm new to the area, and my experience has been mainly in rock promotion.

We have a few acts who can draw a crowd provided we have a place accepting of rap music.

For now, we'd like to avoid open mics (our acts have been pursuing them on their own).

If anyone can email me with some ideas it would really help.

Working on a project to promote local music... (Buffalo)

Hi. I'm looking to start a local music blog about WNY/upstate music and artists (a bigger post outlining this project can be found here), and obviously one aspect of that would be working with and featuring local musicians.

Just to gauge the interest in this project, I'd like to offer an open invitation to local musicians or groups who wish to be featured on the site. This would be either in the form of an actual feature story on you or your band, a record review, a live show review or anything else (I'm open to ideas from the musicians as well).

But here's what I think will make this project unique, and, therefore, successful...

My main interest in music is with recording and production, so I'd like to do a series of exclusive recordings for the blog featuring artists and groups from the area. The artist or in a group would get a FREE RECORDING of one of his/her songs (I'd like to do something semi-live and raw, possibly stripped-down... I envision being sort of a Daytrotter for WNY artists), as well as free promotion, and we would in turn get fresh, exclusive content. The 'grabbing' aspect would be that these recordings will take place at a location the band chooses--basements, concert venues, in a park somewhere... the band can get creative and choose a place with significance to them or just some place that sounds interesting, and I'll record a performance and include it on the blog. In Rochester I ran a mobile recording service and got really great sounding results recording in some very bizarre places, and it presents a unique challenge as well as a unique final product.

Right now this is a very 'ground floor' idea, and its execution will be based on the popularity of the idea in the local music community, so I'm accepting pretty much anything from anyone who wants to contribute or be featured as a musician.
