Need sewing lessons - Singer Machine (Mid Cape)

Hi, my mother and I both would like to take machine sewing lessons in the evenings, days not available. She has two Singer machines, one of which we just bought last winter and has awesome functions that we don't fully understand. Our goal is sweater crafts and dress recycling for personal use. Mom already knows "sewing 101"... but I am totally green with promise to catch-on fast!

If you know anyone who can teach us the following, specifically:
- simple dress hemming for personal wardrobe and costuming
- working with elastic, as in waistbands and also to get that "bunching" look, like old-time bloomers
- how to use the right tools and settings to work with old cut-up sweaters for recycling projects
