Dear D.,
I have been staying here all by myself and trying to figure out a way to see you.
I have a great time when we get together, but right now I am only able to meet my obligations and buy food.

You are in an arm lock with him. Tears are running down your cheeks and you have no where else to go. "Give me the keys, we're going back to your place." You cry and hold onto the keys but he manages to grip them out of your slender fingers anyway. He opens the car door and says sharply "Get in." He throws his bicycle in the trunk. From your place to his is a 10 minute bike ride, but you drove because you didn't feel like carrying your bike down 4 flights of stairs.

The bicycle is thrown in the trunk and the handlebars scratch your car. You would usually care about this but tonight is different. Tonight he is leaving you. You think, "this isn't how it is supposed to end, we can still make it work" but you're in the passenger side now, tears still rolling down your cheeks, and he has started the car already. He doesn't say a single word to you for the 2 minute ride. The 2 minute ride of silence seems to last an entire lifetime.

You have a heart condition. You cannot breathe. He does not make it any better. You get out of the car and walk the other direction. He takes out his bicycle, looks around for you and wonders where you went. The dim streetlights flicker off and on as you pass them, trying to figure out if they should turn off or on –according to the motion detector they were set on.

You unzip your jacket and let the wind nestle between your breasts. The air rushes into your nostrils and down your throat. You begin to cough and choke-you waited too long to take your medicine and now you are struggling. There is a clicking from a far, you know who it is. You pick up your feet and begin to trot, but the body cannot respond to the mind and what is really happening is that you're trudging like a person with a broken leg and limping with the "good" one.

"That's enough fresh air for you" he says and takes you back to your place. He places his arm around you and walks you back to your room. The bicycle is chained to the light post. "Go," and he opens the door for you. You say "no, I go where you go, that's the way it's always been" and he sighs and walks in and you follow. He opens the door with your key and points to your bed.

This is the bed that holds a lovers sweat. This is the bed that when both of you were sick, you laid together in it and sweated out the sickness. The bed holds too many memories and the sheets hold too many sweats. You think of all the nights this bed held for you and you held for him and this is exactly where you want to end up again with him-in the bed. The covers are pulled off and he wraps you in the blanket. "Lie down with me, please" and he shakes his head "no, not this time."

You love him. You feel helpless. You get into bed because you have no more energy. In fact, it wasn't you that got into bed, he lifted your body up and placed you there. The covers are pulled over you and you look at the stars on the blanket. They cover every inch of your body up until your head. You make a wish for him to stay with you. "I'm leaving now." You jump up. Suddenly, energy surges through your body, enough to try to keep him here with you. You are submissive to him and have always been. You have always been one with him and have followed him everywhere. This is the vulnerability that love gives you. You took a chance and this is what you ended with.

You hug him. Kisses are thrown onto his cheek. His face doesn't move. He is expressionless. "In bed." His finger points to the bed-sex, sweat, shame, all balled up into the mattress with no one to bear the memories but you now. He has ignored and forgotten them. "You take everything away from me," you say and realize how pathetic you sound. Realize that you're on your knees begging him to stay, you love him, why wouldn't you fight for him you wonder. Wouldn't everyone?

Make a list in your head:
1. Be a better person
2. Give him lots of alone time
3. Don't question him when he says something
4. Let him call all the shots


You repeat the list out loud and even adding "I'll be really good to you I promise. I'll always behave" though you can't figure out how you misbehaved to begin with. You look at him in the eyes, put your hands to his face, but he says "don't touch me. No physical contact." And more tears well up. He feels bad for a minute and your hands are able to hold his face. You look at him and state in a matter of fact voice "I'll love you less, I promise." He sighs and says "I'll think about it" but you know he already has his mind made up. He says "It'll help with my decision and be a little more in your favor if I leave now and you stay in that bed." The word bed resonate images of slight kisses, the elbow to your face when he sleeps and dreams and moves, you not fidgeting so he could have the space he needed for sleep.

You have no choice. You know he is lying but you're exhausted. This isn't the first time but you fear it is the last-a part of you knows. But you're still hopeful. You cannot help it. It's 3am in the morning. You say "okay" and let him leave. Tomorrow, he will not be coming back. You will not being seeing him. Tomorrow night, you sleep with the tshirts, the pants, the dirty long sleeved shirt-the items which he left in your room. You will smell the odor of his body left in it and fall asleep hugging them tightly in your arms, falling asleep while saying "I'm sorry" repeatedly into the dark for many more nights to come.
