Having trouble finding an apartment (Columbia) $500

My boyfriend and I are going to be moving in together soon and we need an apartment. We aren't students, and we would prefer to stay out of downtown/ campus areas. Something on the Southside would be prime. Here is what we are hoping for:

1 or 2 bedrooms, 1 or 2 baths.
Apartment, duplex, or townhouse.
Nothing horribly big or small, just something cozy.
Appliances, such as a washer and dryer, fridge, stove/ oven, microwave. These aren't a must, but would be helpful.
Safe area.
NO ROOMMATES
Ideally, rent would be no greater than $500, but we can handle up to $575 or $600.
There is other stuff that we would like to have, but we aren't going to be too picky about it, as we are not going to be living there for the rest of our lives.

RE:RESPONDING TO WORK FOR HOUSING POST?? READ THIS FIRST (COLUMBIA) (Columbia)

The same has happened to me. I would bet if the responder contacted me, it would be the same couple. Our socalled "renters" cost me thousands of dollars in damages and we will probably never recover the loss or the damages. The house was freshly painted and carpets redone and it took them less than 3 months to destroy the house. I filled a 20 cu yd dumpster with trash and had to use biohazard clothes and masks to clean the house. I figure I lost $400 for each of the 300 pics i took of the house. If you trust these people you may not be as lucky as me. The only thing that got them out of there was people who charge 200% interest came looking for them and they were on the run again. If you are going to do this, use a rental agency to do background checks and hire them to manage your property.

RESPONDING TO WORK FOR HOUSING POST?? READ THIS FIRST (COLUMBIA)

IF you are thinking about responding to a "housing for work" posting at this site in Columbia, MO---be leary!!!! My experiences with these individuals is that they will move in...not do the work, steal from you, damage your property, and run up your utility bills. By the time you realize what is happening, they have "established residency" so even if you fire them, they can remain in and on your property, and you have to go through an expensive and time consuming eviction process. They can call the police on you and "say you are threatening them, " place exparte orders on you where you cannot even go on your on property and they can invite their "friends" to come and live on your property as well, even if you have a lease, and you can do nothing.. IF you have other legitimate renter's on you property, they will get them exparted from the premisses. So they are the only ones there, if they think some one is at your house that is a "threat to them" they will call the police.

These people are under the radar. IF they have a driver license, they will check out clean. If you do a back ground check they appear clean....that is because they take the role of the victim. Most are using our homeless shelters as home bases and using the library computers to place posts. They usually have you call or ask you for your number to call after initial e-mail response is made---this is so that there is no record of anything in writing other than the initial contact e-mail. They may or may not give you a correct first name, or a name that they go by, for example: Their name is Bradly but everyone knows them by Chris (it is their middle name or a nickname); sometimes they work in male and female pairs---you usually speak with the female...she is the one who shows up to "negotiate" the arrangements.

These people show up looking respectable, but have fallen on hard times...they may tell you they are living in a storage unit, their vehicle broke down when they got here and then inpounded and they lost everything but what they could carry; they are moving their remodeling company here from another state (they will have a web-site) it will look legitimate; they are a family and they will have 2 to 3 kids with them, that lost their home because their landlord went bankrupt so now they have no credit reference; they moved here to make things write with their ex as their are children involved, but it didn't work out so now they are without a place to live.

I am sure there are a host of other "reasons," know these people are working the system and stealing from you, me and everyone else who pay taxes. You will find out that they are receiving checks from unemployment from other states where they came from where they had jobs and with the extensions being given are getting money; they are using food stamps because they are not reporting their true income, including your "housing"; they go to food banks and pantries and do not give they address they are living in but one of the many shelter's address, or the address of "0 the Streets. They continue to sit at the tables of those food kitchens meant for the true homeless and those who have really fallen on hard times. Yet even if your agreement is that they pay their utilities you will not receive a dime...and they will keep it a cool 69 degrees in the summer and a toasty warm 80 degrees in the winter. Understand they can milk you out of 90 days of this easily at $200 to $300 in utilities (without cable and phone) a month.

Please save yourself the heartache and expense---learn from my situation. I lost not only money and property; have to fix damages, but my opportunity for the 1st of 4 consecutive surgeries until after the first of next year. I was "hiring" a couple, the lady to be my Au pair for my two children making sure they got to school, and some one was home when they got off, run errons and act as a contact pick up if they got sick etc as my husband worked out of town and had to leave by 6 am and did not get home until 4:45 or 5 pm; and a personal medical aide to me before and after the surgery. They gentleman was to find a job to pay for the utilities and help fix things around my properties (my house and my dad's house (just two doors up). They could use the 2nd bedroom in the house next door to mine which I owned, the community areas bathroom, kitchen, living room, bonus/pantry room; the front bedroom was the renter's. They could do this rent free for exchange of services, but had to pay their portion of utilities (it is all electric, so this would be electric, water, sewer, trash the property is City of Columbia utilities).

All of these surgeries are necessary so that my doctors can focus on the real issue the spinal cord injury I have and the up coming surgeries I have to come it as my neck is breaking c-3 through c-6--and there has been movement. Why do I tell you of all this??? If they will do this to some one as good hearted, and in medical duress as myself---what will they do to you???

We can also provide vet references, proof that two of our dogs are currently in training classes, and written statements from our current apartment neighbors and management that our animals are quiet 99% of the time. We have purchased a $500 Rug Doctor steam cleaner to ensure that any messes are taken care of in a timely, efficient manner. We are also more than willing to put a plastic covering over any carpeted areas. And- we always pick up after our animals! In short, we are good, responsible pet owners and neighbors.
