Forestry Technician-Gypsy Moth Trapper (Western Wisconsin)
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, Gyspy Moth Program, is offering 40 positions as Forestry Technicians, Gypsy Moth Trappers. We are generally hiring in the counties west of I-39. The specific county names are listed on the first page of the application (see link below). Persons hired to fill these positions must live in, or be willing to work in, these western Wisconsin counties. You will be hired to trap one or more counties. Your home will be your home station.

Job Duties:
Trap for male gypsy moths. Assemble and set approximately 750 gypsy moth traps in pre-determined areas. Must work independently, read maps, record trap locations, use a GPS unit to record trap and moth catch data, identify gypsy moths, record and report results to the lead worker on a daily basis. Report work hours to the lead worker on a daily basis. Contact residents to gain access to private lands and distribute brochures describing gypsy moths. Check traps in mid-season and remove all traps at the end of the trapping season. Fill out and send in all required paperwork accurately and correctly in a timely manner. Assist with egg mass survey program.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
The ideal trapper should be organized, detail-oriented, have legible handwriting, have excellent math skills, and available to work the entire trapping season. Be comfortable working independently in isolated outdoor areas, reading maps including plat books, writing descriptions of trap locations, identifying male gypsy moths, identifying trees, recording and reporting data, contacting landowners, and following directions. A general background in natural sciences would be an asset. Familiarity with GPS units is a plus. Applicant should be able to work independently under general supervision.
Qualifications Required:
Residents of Wisconsin only and at least 18 years of age. Must have a reliable vehicle, a telephone and a valid Wisconsin driver’s license. Must be able to provide current valid WI driver’s license, original social security card and proof of current auto insurance. Electronic bank deposit of bi-weekly paycheck is required.
Salary and Work Schedule:
This position pays $11.00 to $11.50 per hour based on experience trapping gypsy moths. There will be 12 weeks of work with no more than 10 hours per day and 40 hours a week. Work hours are between 6:00am and 6:00pm, Monday-Friday only. Mileage is reimbursed at $0.495 per mile for the use of private vehicles (50-200 miles/day). The qualified candidate should be able to work intermittently from late May to late September 2010. There may be 1-2 weeks off between trap setting and trap checking, and 1-2 weeks off between trap checking and trap takedown.
