The Hewlett-Packard (HP) ScanJet 5300C flatbed scanner delivers clear, detailed scans at a price the small-business user can live with.
In addition to high-quality 36-bit color and a maximum 1,200 dots-per-inch (dpi) resolution, the ScanJet 5300C has shortcut buttons for quick, no-hassle scanning to an e-mail application, fax machine, or printer. Sturdily constructed, the scanner also includes both parallel and Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectors to suit most users' needs.
The documentation is disappointing, consisting only of a brief troubleshooting sheet and setup poster. You'll find detailed troubleshooting steps, upgrade information, and technical support contact information for the 5300C on HP's Web site. The accompanying software made up for the documentation deficiency. In addition to HP's PrecisionScan 3.0 with built-in optical character recognition (OCR), the 5300C includes Adobe PhotoDeluxe Business Edition and Internet Design Shop Gold 4.2 for manipulating images and creating Web sites. There are new-user demos of the scanner's features included on the software CD.
Installing and setting up the scanner couldn't be easier. We tested the 5300C on an IBM PIII 500MHz computer with 128MB of RAM and a Matrox Millennium II graphics adapter. After loading the software and rebooting our PC, we plugged in the scanner and were ready to go.
We like the automatic resolution setting the software lets you use when you're scanning. The program adjusts the dpi according to whether you're faxing, e-mailing, or printing, and it decreases file size while maintaining enough of the image's resolution for the task. This handy feature takes some of the guess work out of setting the resolution. We scanned all of the test images at the maximum 1,200dpi resolution and 36-bit color settings. Details and color definition are superb with the 5300C, though the colors themselves are a little dark. Grayscale capabilities are also below average with only 24 visible shades of gray (compared to the 27-shade average). The OCR program performed very well, however, with clear, clean text scans free of blemishes and distortions, even when we enlarged the documents by 100%. Despite the 5300C's dark color reproduction and below-average grayscale ability, we liked its convenience features, image detail and sharpness, and OCR software. It's a decent scanner at $299.
