These are tax auditor positions that are responsible for conducting professional audit examinations in varying and complicated tax environments. These positions will determine that taxpayers selected for audit have filed tax returns appropriately and remitted the proper amount of state taxes. These positions require a thorough understanding of tax law and auditing methodologies. Audits may be conducted for any of the taxes administered by the Department of Treasury. Entities audited include corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, individuals and other forms of businesses.

Experience with Federal and/or State taxes, above average analytical skills, work experience with Windows, Word, Excel and Internet and possession of a CPA are highly desirable.

The Audit Selection positions are responsible for evaluating taxpayers for audit assignment, the analysis of audit results and application of results to future taxpayer program screenings. This position requires proficient computer knowledge including creating and working with databases. This position will also be expected to perform a minimum of 10 audits annually to maintain audit skills and knowledge.

These are auditor positions responsible for developing and conducting a wide range of projects to identify non-filers and under-reporters of the various taxes administered by the Michigan Department of Treasury. Taxpayers are then notified of their tax discrepancies using letters of inquiry issued in accordance with MCL 205.21 of the Revenue Act. Auditors work either in a group setting or independently under the direction of the audit supervisor or senior auditor. These auditor positions are also responsible for assisting in the administration of Michigan’s Voluntary Disclosure Program. The Discovery Unit utilizes information from a variety of sources to identify non or under-compliant taxpayers.

Experience in data mining, database programs, SQL or Visual Basic are highly desirable.
