Coordinator w/ Heavy Social Media + Editorial Focus (Hollywood, CA)

Ranker is a startup consumer website in the user-generated content space. We have an ambitious site, beta launched in late July 2009, that is already starting to take off and has a lot of potential for growth, and we are currently looking for someone to handle a wide variety of responsibilities. Duties will range from social media management and viral marketing to QA and testing, and there will also be some light office/administrative work. Basically, we are looking for someone who can do whatever needs doing to help us develop, promote and grow Ranker.

Candidates should be able to function well in a fast-paced, high stress environment. You should be detail oriented, organized, intelligent, tech-savvy, hardworking, and very capable of multitasking. Excellent writing skills are a requirement, as are strong computer skills and familiarity with PCs, Vista, Outlook and the internet. Only candidates with 4 year degrees or equivalents need apply. Above all else, you must be passionate about the web industry, and about the opportunity to learn a lot on the job. You will be called upon to do things you may not have a strong background in. We can spend some energy training you, but for the most part, we will expect you to be able to effectively research and learn things independently.

Experience in a QA/testing environment, community management experience, basic bookkeeping/Quickbooks experience, general office experience, low-level HTML or other coding skills, pop culture knowledge, guerilla/viral marketing experience, internet research experience, editorial experience, note-taking skills, and heavy web 2.0 experience (personally and/or work experience) are all huge plusses.

This is not your typical 9-5 job, and we are looking for candidates who are committed to building a career in this industry, and not just looking to punch a clock and get a paycheck. If you are the kind of person who may find yourself thinking “that’s not in my job description” when given a task, this isn’t the right fit for you. We are a true Silicon Valley-style startup, so if you need a very structured corporate environment, this is not the gig for you either. But, rest assured that our company is a meritocracy and there’s more to do than bodies to do it – if you can add value to the business going forward you will be rewarded appropriately, and we can guarantee that you will learn a LOT about the consumer internet very quickly.

Compensation will be determined on experience and includes equity and medical benefits.

HOW TO APPLY: Please send resume and cover letter to jobs@ranker.com. You must send both in order to be considered. In your cover letter, let us know what websites you visit regularly, what software you’re proficient with, any social media pages or writing samples you care to share, and why you think you would be a good fit for our position and what your initial impressions of
http://www.ranker.com are.

Note: If you contact us with a solicitation for contract web design or development services, we will make a point of not using you. We are not looking for web designers or development firms at this point.

Digital Internship - Writers Needed! From Movie Geeks to Single Moms (Hollywood, CA Work From Home)

Hey there,

We are a web start-up, focused on user-generated content, with elements of social networking and a whole lot of cutting-edge technology. We launched as a public beta in August and some of our current writers have had their content seen by more than 20,000 people already.

It's a community site, so we are currently looking for Digital Interns to create content on our public beta to get some of our key features working. Good writers, bloggers, or people familiar with witty - or just plain informative - internet writing are a must. If you’re willing to get your hands dirty learning the ins and outs of launching a successful website, then we encourage you to apply. If you want to get great visibility for your blog, site or just for yourself as a writer, then this is the bandwagon to jump on.

The Job:

- Creating enjoyable, new, and exciting content on our new platform and interacting with existing users exhaustively.
- Creating content that matters to you, being creative, and adding to existing content on the site.
- Promoting yours (and others') content across the web
- Providing Feedback on the ins and outs of the site itself.
- You would work from home, school, or wherever you'd like. This is a DIGITAL INTERNSHIP, so you would not be coming into an office (though if you live in the Los Angeles area we'd be happy to have you come by whenever), but you would be accountable for a certain amount of trackable work.

Requirements:

- You must be able to write a coherent sentence.
- Come up with extremely original and uncommon content ideas, as well as be able to add your own, learned, two cents on common and existing content.
- Defeat an army of the undead using only your dry humor and the chainsaw attached to your wrist.
- A working knowledge of pop culture - or if not pop culture, other passionate areas of interest (science, art, history, technology - our site is a treasure trove of interests).
- You must be available for at least 8-10 hours a week, spread out around your schedule. This is stuff you might be doing in your spare time anyway.
- You must be an active user of online social networks of all kinds (facebook, twitter, digg, blogs, etc).
- You must be extremely web and computer savvy, as some viral marketing may be requested of the right candidates.
- Must want to pursue writing/learn how to promote yourself and your writing on the internet
- Must be an avid reader or fan of sites like listverse.com, cracked.com, or ivillage.com. Must love lists.

Rewards:

- The opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a groundbreaking new website started by an internet vet who sold a previous web business.
- We’re a growing company, so good interns could end up moving into paid positions down the line.
- We’ll also give you all the college credit your school will accept.
- Any recommendations you need to boost your resume.
- Your content, assuming it's good, will be featured prominently on our site and should get plenty of hits; so if you have any blogs, sites, or anything you want pushed, giving us great content can only benefit you.

Please respond to the craigslist email above with a cover letter and resume. Please include what social networks you are a regular part of and a list of your top five favorite [anything] to be considered.

If you are curious about this opportunity, or even just the site itself, we welcome casual users with open arms. Simply go to http://www.ranker.com. We are growing every day.

RENAME OUR VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION. REWARD OFFERED!

We are starting a new nonprofit organization which will send international volunteers overseas (primarily Americans and Europeans) to volunteer in charitable causes in developing countries. Our first project volunteers (mostly native English speakers) will be travelling to a relatively undeveloped city in China and teaching homeless children to speak English. However, our projects are not limited to China and are not limited to teaching. We plan on offering a variety of projects in the future. We already have a website available (www.HorizonsAbroad.org) however WE DO NOT LIKE THE CURRENT NAME and plan to change it.

We need a creative new name for our non-profit organization. We also need a URL which matches the name exactly.

Specifically, we need a creative, memorable name that is both witty and clearly conveys the purpose of our organization. While I want to be as open-ended and allow you to be as creative as possible, I would lay down these few guidelines for naming:

- The URL you come up with has to be available with both a “.com” and a “.org”. We don’t want names which are for sale. Please only send us name ideas which have the .com and the .org available. Also, there should be no dashes, hyphens, or underscores in the proposed URL.
- The URL should be ideally under 10 letters long but I could accept as many as 18 (though 15 is really unlikely to win). The shorter, the wittier, the better!
- The name/URL should convey both the volunteering/charitable focus and international/global focus of our organization.
- We want something which is dynamic, exciting, and witty …
- We will be hosting these programs in a number of countries so we do not want to limit the name of our program to any particular geography. We need a name that not only could be applied to any country, language, or geography but also to any kind of volunteer project.

For a great website which provides some tips on naming, check out the following link: http://www.igorinternational.com/process/name-development-product-company.php

As a hint, this page lists four categories of names: Functional/Descriptive, Invented, Experiential, and Evocative. We really want names which are Experiential… though Evocative, Functional, or Invented may work as well. The problem with Functional/Descriptive names is that they tend to be too bland. The problem with Invented names is that they tend to be too hard to understand. And the problem with Evocative names is that they tend to be too controversial. So experiential is our preference.

If you think of a name which we choose for our organization, we will pay you $200. Beyond the $200 payment, you will be rewarded by knowing that you have helped out a charitable organization so you will be working for a good cause. If you enjoy this kind of work, please give it a try. Send us an email with names and I will add it to a list. We will select a name in a few weeks and will let you know if you are the winner!

Thanks,
Carl, Jonathan, and Susan

P/T assistant or intern, animal advocacy and book marketing. (Pacific Palisades)

Part time assistant or intern, animal advocacy and book marketing.

I am an animal advocate and writer looking for a part-time assistant or intern. You can learn more about me and my work at www.ThankingtheMonkey.com

I can pay minimum wage, $8.00 an hour, for now, and you should be able to get college credit if you are going for some sort of marketing or PR or writing degree. And if you do a great job, you'll get a great written reference. : ) There is definitely a possibility that this could grow into a job with more responsibility and significantly better pay if we work well together.

I am currently looking for somebody to help me a few hours per day, working from my home in Pacific Palisades. You will be helping me send out books (my book --"Thanking the Monkey: Rethinking the Way we Treat Animals") and articles and t-shirts, and doing Facebook and other web site updates, posting videos and photos, doing research and hunting stuff down and ordering things on the web, placing calls to people's managers, and occasionally running errands. You should have a warm and confident phone manner and decent basic writing skills.

You must be willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Please email me a note or letter. You can attach a resume, but it is easier for me if you paste it in the body of the email so I don't have to deal with attachments. Send it to
assistant@thankingthemonkey.com
A written reference from a teacher or past employer would be great. So would a photo (that can be attached). I don't care if you are black, white, fat, thin, gay, straight or psychedelically tattooed, but I guess I am a frownist -- I would love to see a warm smile.
You will need to have a car and a laptop. Please let me know what programs, which you know how to use proficiently, are on that laptop.

Ideally, you would be able to start work later this week. Next week would do too.

Yours and the animals',
Karen Dawn
