10 Tips to Bullet Proof Your Resume in Tough Times! $27

Tip #1 – Use Titles or Headings that Match the Jobs you Want!
Before this recent economic decline in 2009, employers were receiving hundreds of resumes for a single job opening – not it’s being reported that thousands of resumes may be submitted for a single job! Therefore, it’s even more important now than ever that you make sure if you have weak job titles that don’t match the skills being sought in the jobs you want, that you label your work experience to match. For example, if you were looking for an A/R & AP Accounting position but your resume had the title of Accounting Assistant, which would be stronger … Accounting Assistant … or … A/P & A/R Accounting for Over 1,000 Accounts … as a skill heading in your resume?

Tip 2 – Use Design that Grabs Attention
With the potential of thousands of resumes begin received for a job opening, it will be even more critical now, that your resume use design that directs and controls the employer’s eye path so that his or her eyes travel down the resume and instantly see skills, job titles, experience and achievements that hook them and make them want to call you for an interview.

Tip 3 – Create Content That Sells
Resume design should get attention but it's really the content of your resume, the descriptions you include of your skills and abilities, that determine how many interviews you generate--as well as the level of salary offers you receive. For example, from my own background, which is stronger: 1) Professional resume writer with over 20 years resume writing experience. Or 2) Master Resume Writer, with experience writing over 10,000 resumes for clients with incomes ranging from $20,000 to $200,000+, and assisting clients double and triple interview rates and land salary increases from $2,000 to $80,000 more per year.

Tip 4 – Quantify & Use Power Words
As 2nd example from my own experience illustrates, using #, $ and % in your descriptions of each job you’ve held, your experience and achievements help employers visualize and understand how you can contribute to their bottom line. Again, this is something that will be imperative in 2009’s economy where every employer and business will be looking to increase revenues, cut costs, increase productivity, and expand sales.

Tip 5 – Analyze Ads and Job Descriptions to Identify Top Skills & Key Words
As competition increases for every job you apply for, it’s going to extremely important that you analyze a batch of job ads for the jobs you want, underline all skills in them that you possess or have similar skills to, and then be sure that your resume includes and highlights these skills. Only about 5-10% of resumes do this effectively.

Tip 6 – Identify & Solve Employer Needs
In addition to the skills or needs listed in employer job ads, employers have many more needs. For example, an accounting job ad may request A/R and A/P experience but the employer will also need someone who can deal effectively with other departments, research accounting issues and records to solve problems. To beat today's heavy competition for jobs, it's important that you identify and anticipate the full range of needs each employer faces and show how you can solve those needs.

Tip 7 – Sell the Benefits of Your Skills
Most resumes provide a list of duties that each applicant has been responsible for--without explaining the benefit of those skills to employers. For example, a secretary's resume might state she can type 80 wpm and is extremely accurate. This statement lacks an explanation of how her typing speed and accuracy benefit an employer's bottom line. The real benefit is that the employee can produce more work and ultimately save the employer money. Two statements that work much more effectively include: Achieved top production by maintaining a high degree of accuracy with typing speed at 80 wpm. Cut labor expenses over $6,000 annually by eliminating the need for part-time word processing staff.

Tip 8 – Create an Image That Matches the Job & Salary You Want
In my classes, I often put a before resume up with a matching job ad the applicant was interested in. I then have the class underline all skills in the ad and we write down the salary of the job. Then we go through the resume, look at each job title or heading in the resume, and I ask does this title or heading match the job or salary this person wants – does this title or skill heading make this person’s image go up, down or match the job and salary. Using simple graphing, it becomes immediately clear to most people why their resumes don’t work.

Tip 9 – Prioritize the Content of Your Resume
Many people pile on the bulleted statements in their resumes, yet have never thought which statement is most impressive in a long list of bullets!! Often, I find about ¾ of the way into a long bulleted description of job duties, the most important statement is buried. Make sure when you write the description of each job, based on what you have identified in job ads as most important, this information is listed 1st in the resume, and the rest of the resume descriptions are also prioritized by importance.

Tip 10 – Customize & Target Your Resume
Resume writing is quite stressful for many people and therefore, typically, people spend as little time as possible working on their resumes. However, investing an additional 5-10 minutes to customize your resume and target for a specific job can more than double and triple the amount of interviews you land. I tested my resume about 3 years ago and applied for positions ranging from about $40,000 to $70,000. They included: Career Center Director, Career Center Coordinator, Career Instructor, Personnel Coordinator, and Technical Recruiter. Each job ad asked for different skill requirements and required that I create a different image for each position. For example, you expect a Career Center Director to have more skills and experience than a Career Center Coordinator. So for each job, I changed my titles slightly to match each job. For example, owning a personnel agency, I labeled that experience as Career Center Director/Personnel Agency Owner … by labeling my personnel agency experience in this way, I looked well qualified for the position as Career Center Director. By customizing each resume slightly, I ended up getting a 100% response rate and request for an interview for all positions I had applied for.

The authors will attend a signing party on Thursday, December 10th at the USM Portland Bookstore.
The shipping date for autographed books will be Friday, December 11th - in time for the holidays.
If you wish to purchase one of the books in the store, Come to the USM Portland Bookstore, on Bedford Street in the USM Woodbury Campus Center, on the evening of December 10th. The time will be posted on our website once it has been set.
