We are looking for artists with disabilities, all kinds of disabilities.

Remembering With Dignity (RWD) has a special art project with a show in late May. People who lived, died and were buried in the State Hospital Cemeteries were given a numbered gravemarker or in some cases, no marker at all. Over 13,000 individuals were buried in Minnesota alone. RWD has worked the last 14 years to provide new gravemarkers with the individuals correct name, birthdate (birth year) and deathdate. 5, 069 is the total we have done to date.

We are looking for artists to do portraits of these individuals, who until the recent past were nameless and faceless. There are so few photographs of the residents. We want to change that and represent them in how we imagine they might have looked. Or an interpertation from the precious few photographs. We have genealogy: cemetery records, admission ledgers, corner reports, death certificates, etc. We have some photographs from families who have contacted us over the years about their relative who was buried in the state hospital cemetery.

We are looking for artists with disabilities, all kinds of disabilities. We are looking for artists who had relatives who lived in the state institutions and would like to do a portrait of their family member. We are looking for artists who lived in the state hospital institutions.

Our exhibit will include an interactive game that will mimic my position, as community organizer, and how I search the data to verify the information as correct for the numbered gravemarkers (unmarked graves).

This show will travel statewide as part of our educational process in bringing awareness about people living with disablities and bring dignity to a long forgotten group of beloved individuals. This exhibit will help us lift away the darkness and shame of our tragic past in how people were treated in our state institutions. It will help legislators understand the need for an apology. It will honor those who died in secrecy and restore their dignity.
