Locomotive Horns, Mayor Jim Smith, MRL, and Carroll College. (Helena, Montana)

Loud diesel horns in the wee hours of morning. No Sleep! The town of Billings, Montana got rid of MRL's obnoxious locomotive diesel horns, now it is time for The Capitol City to follow their lead.

Complaints to Mayor Jim Smith are being accepted to give your opinion regarding the use of air horns near Carroll College. This because several Montana Rail Link "BNSF" engineers are increasing the obnoxious shrill horn blasts from diesel locomotives while switching railcars.

The staccato blasts while these trains move back and forth are not used to warn the vehicles waiting behind the flashing gates, they are used to alert brakemen while the locomotive units switchout railcars from east and west-bound freight trains.

Deafening short blasts of horn signals are used in addition to the two-way radio communication. These annoying signals do not offer additional protection to cars waiting behind the crossing gates as the freight train is already blocking the crossing.

Dennis Washington is getting away with manipulating these railcars with ganged road units to save the cost of using a single quieter local switch engine. A single switch engine could make up these trains in the Helena Railroad Yard the way it was done when Northern Pacific Railroad was in operation.

Switching operations with back and forth train movements should not be made near Helena's west-side residential area and right next to the Carroll College womans dormitory complex.

If you have not visited the Helmond Railcam website to experience how Holland has dealt with the numerous trains zipping through their villages,

here is the webpage: http://www.railcam.nl/ (Double-Click on video for a full screen view)

The Netherlands have the answer, they have enacted "Quiet Zone" ordinances for the peace and sanity of their peoples. You will never hear an engineer violate the tranquility of Holland's villages with air horns.
