Last year, I did spend 3 months at the Upper West Side, which is NOT my neighborhood. Still, of course, I will consider.
No need to say Amsterdam is the perfect operating base to discover Europe. Trains to Brussels (3 hours, one way starting from 27 USD), Paris (4 hours, 35 USD), London (5.5 hours, 70 USD), Berlin (6 hours, 56 USD), Mediterranean (Nice, Marseille, 8 hours, 63 USD) Vienna (11 hours, 132 USD).
