    Systems Operations Lead (SoHo)

Meetup is seeking a self-motivated and entrepreneurial systems engineer to join our NYC based team to help us scale the service. Do you enjoy finding creative ways to squeeze out extra performance out of code, databases, and infrastructure? Do you see solutions others don't? Do you value pragmatism over dogma? Are you at a point in your career where you want to teach and mentor others, while at the same time still be able to spend much, if not most of your time with your hands in the technology? Do you love web technology? Do you have web side projects that you work on for fun?

Meetup is a Java shop built on mostly open source software (Apache, Linux, MySQL, Memcached, MogileFS, Hbase/Hadoop, etc). We are a company that values doers over talkers, mentors over managers, and self-management over bureaucracy. We are a company where people who take risks and win are rewarded and grow. We are seeking an experienced Leader/Doer to lead our systems team, with the primary focus on performance, capacity, and reliability of the Meetup.com service.

    You would be responsible for:

    * Proposing *and* implementing architecture changes (systems, data model or code) in order to make architecture more scalable/reliable.
    * Developing and launching a rapid disaster recovery plan.
    * Being a senior leader in the company ... more mentors are always needed and wanted.

    The right person:

    * Has solid UNIX/Linux Administration skills.
    * Has the ability to code and enjoys doing so.
    * Has experience managing a high traffic MySQL/Innodb environment.
    * Has scaled systems with little budget (we have the ability to buy solutions, but it's not too impressive to hear about people scaling on a large budget).
    * Values working as part of a team over being the solo hero.
    * Has the ability and the desire to be *very* hands on.
    * Can't imagine not working at a startup.
    * Is a self manager and loves to get things quickly without sacrificing quality.

If this sounds like you, then please submit your resume and cover letter to jobs@meetup.com. Your cover letter MUST include salary requirements and what inspired you to apply for a position at Meetup. Resumes without cover letters will NOT be considered. This is a senior position and a great opportunity to join a small, smart, and innovative team at a results-oriented company with an excellent financial footing, a viable and proven business model, and more importantly, a mission to change the world.

    Specific Experience in SQL/Agency Management

I am the HR manager just hired at a large agency in Manhattan and my boss has tasked me with building a team of experienced people who can help us build a project management/acccounting system using a SQL database and Microsoft Sharepoint 2007.

He's suggested I find someone who's worked at one of the leading software companies that makes advertising agency software (and hope they can use their experience to work in SQL/Sharepoint):
    „X Creative Manager
    „X Advantage Software: Adman
    „X Clients & Profits

or to see if there is someone that has experience at one of the big agency holding companies doing this (Omnicom, WPP, Havas, Interpublic, Publicis, etc.), if there even is such a thing.

Finally, he's suggested identifying the top recruiters who might be able to help (??) or a MS certified software company. My boss only gave me one recommendation:

    Synergy (in CT).

I am posting to Craigslist because I need advice, and I've had good experiences on here before.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might find these people? Any strategies or recs?

    Thanks in advance.

    Senior Ruby/Javascript developer (Financial District)

    Wanted: Senior Ruby/JavaScript Developers

    The Job:

We are hiring a technical problem-solver to streamline operations and enable strategic initiatives in the online advertising marketplace. You will help automate crucial business processes, integrate and deploy ad technologies, design customer-worthy data outputs, and incorporate MonkeyBroker’s emerging web technologies into the advertising world.

You will join a team that is designed so that it can build and iterate fast, and will get to touch on a lot of different aspects of the online advertising industry. You'll be expected to learn the business as well as its technology and be given direct responsibility for defining and solving problems. This is not a “build to the spec” type of job.

MonkeyBroker has a flat engineering structure that gives individuals a great deal of responsibility. As a senior developer at MonkeyBroker, you will be involved in all stages of developing the product you are working on. You'll create new product ideas and help guide the product roadmap, spec out what the next generation will look like, and implement it yourself. Because of this, we look for individuals who thrive in a less structured environment where they will work creatively and take initiative.

    You:

We are looking for someone with a strong engineering background who enjoys building high quality products used by millions, transparently. You’ll be programming mostly in Ruby on Rails and JavaScript, so experience in that environment is ideal. A good product sense, an understanding of the web 2.0 ecosystem, and strong personal initiative are essential. You enjoy coding, but what energizes you is solving real-life problems in elegant and practical ways. You're comfortable in a fast-moving industry, and can adapt to emerging customer needs. You're versatile, and are able to wear the different development hats needed to turn a latent customer need into a real, shipped product. You know a lot about software design and development, and when you find something that you need but don't know, you get out there and learn it. You speak excellent English and can communicate your thoughts clearly. You will be learning a new vocabulary in the Advertising world.

    Qualifications:

We don't expect you to individually have all of these competencies, but the team, as a whole, is looking for the following:

    • Strong experience in Ruby on Rails
    • Strong JavaScript experience
    • Strong SQL knowledge
    • Good knowledge of front-end web programming
    • 2+ years work experience as a software engineer
    • Computer Science degree or equivalent experience
    • Understanding of scalability, Database and web application design, and algorithms
    • Rapid development methodologies and design thinking discipline
    • Usability and interface design
    • Data visualization and information design
    • Savviness with emerging internet and online advertising technologies
    • Deep insight into online advertising platforms, customer experiences and disruptive trends
    • Entrepreneurial resourcefulness and creativity

You will learn the online advertising industry inside and out; the team's value comes from being able to see how things get done right now and articulate how they can be done more simply, more reliably, more elegantly.

Residents of New York City only please.
