GPS - StreetPilot 2720 (ocala) $250

The StreetPilot 2720 is a plug-and-play portable automotive GPS navigator that features MapSource City Navigator pre-loaded, detailed maps—right out of the box. This means no unlocking or uploading map data to your unit! The unit includes a pre-programmed hard drive that stores City Navigator detailed maps of North America or Europe (see MapViewer, right, to view coverage areas). Motorists can navigate to a specific address or access an industry-leading database of more than five million points of interest—including lodging, restaurants, gas stations, and local attractions. The intuitive, menu-driven touchscreen ensures that navigating the unit is as easy as navigating the road. This system has the latest updated softeware and the 2009 Maps loaded.

The new StreetPilot 2720 assumes the top spot among Garmin's GPS automotive offerings as it useable both in a vehicle and on a motorcycle (with the optional motorcycle mount) unlike a lot of the competition. This fact alone to me starts putting it head and shoulders above the option and goes a long way to justifying is hefty price tag.
The other major selling point is that it comes with a 'bean bag' mounting platform meaning you can move it easily between vehicles and you leave no rubber sucker marks to attract the criminal looking into glove boxes!

As part of the package it comes with an indoor power lead so you can programme it inside, a DVD disc giving all of Europe's maps and the cigar lighter power lead. The instructions are clear and precise, but it is really easy to use and you pick it up very quickly.

It really is a plug in and use system and once it has honed into the satellites you can start using the touch screen and the four buttons on the right. Two large touch-screen buttons, "View Map" and "Where To?" adorn the 2720's opening screen. There are also smaller icons for Tools, Settings, and Volume.
As with most GPS navigation systems in this class, it provides several choices for orienting the displayed map. You can also adjust the displayed map size and there are a host of other features that would take far too long to list.

One of the most important characteristics of an automotive GPS navigation system is the quality and readability of its screen. The excellent 3.8-inch touch screen is one of the best on the market. A built-in light sensor allows the screen to dim the brightness automatically as the ambient light decreases, and to change to the night colour scheme after dark which is very impressive.

On the bike it proved equally at home and some torrential rain during the test failed to have any effect whatsoever. What I did lose was the voice commands as I did not have the helmet coms, but to be honest its only the directions in unfamiliar areas that I needed.

What I did like was the 'home' button that caused the unit to set course for home wherever I was and saved time. Also useful were the petrol stations and hotel finders again useful in unfamiliar territory. It is also quite simple to save new favourites and find points of interest near your current location or near a destination that you select.

Throughout the test the StreetPilot 2720 provided accurate, turn-by-turn directions, failed to be phased when I deliberately ignored it and went another way and was totally reliable.
As with anything you get what you pay for and what you get with this is an awful lot. The duplicity of use between two and four wheels sets it aside from the rest and just the overall quality justifies it vying for the best on the market title! www.garmin.com
