Good post. I do have two pitts myself, and I also have a 4 year old son who is confined to a wheelchair. I've never seen a pet more gentle with, or protective of a child. Both my dogs love him, they cuddle up with him in his bed many times, and if he's crying they go to see what's wrong. If he's misbehaved and either myself or my wife are scolding him over it they both kind of perk up and pay special attention, then when we're done they go over to console him.
They're very protective, and very good dogs.
The one thing that's true is they are a little bit more aggressive towards other dogs than other dogs I've owned in the past, such as retrievers, labs, etc. My dogs' playing looks like those breeds would fighting. They are both very strong, and very tough dogs. The boy is 80 lbs. and solid muscle, when you pet him it feels like steel almost, he's that built. Same with her, although she's much smaller (about 60 lbs.) she actually is a bit more aggressive than he is. But any of that really only extends to their playing. When they play with the pit puppies that live down the block (about 4 months old) they're very gentle with them.
It's a shame that so many people buy into the idiotic idea that they are naturally aggressive or dangerous dogs. The only danger I can see is if you have really small children and your dogs are still fairly young. Then and only then because they can get overly excited and knock the child over. I think a lot of it has to do with the people that own them as well. The other day on CL some woman was posting some unintelligible crap on here about pitts. It turned out she owned one. I wrote her about a correction on her post and she launched into this barely legible attack on me, claiming to be a supporter of and advocate for pitbulls. If you ask me, it's that sort of idiot that helps to perpetuate the negative view.

assumptions on pitties

I keep hearing from kids (much much younger than me) that the pitbulls are terrible dogs for people; that they are mean.

Here is some food for thought:
Pitbulls were never bred to be mean to people. On the contrary, because they were handled as often or moreso (personally) by owners than other breeds,
bullies that were aggressive to people were/have been historically "put down". Therefore, the trait of aggressive behavior towards people was not bred into
their bloodlines as a result.

Statistically, the pitbull has been listed as one of the best family dogs with being raised with children of all ages. The have statistics where they were higher than
many of the other dogs that people would assume were higher on that list, such as retrievers. The average of bites on people that were serious injuries were/are
less than 3 a year from stats that I reviewed in this past week when looking for information to stress to the kids that the dog is not the "bad dog". That it could be
any dog that would bite; that every breed has their alpha dogs in a litter; and that pitbulls are actually less aggressive to people than many other prized "family dogs".

Pitbulls are the scapegoats for bad dogs in the present time. Years ago it was the doberman, the shepherd, other breeds as well. The list seems to be cyclical
and it's the bully breeds again. Everyone says, "well.. their jaws lock". Again - lock on what? a person? When is the last time you heard of a neighbor being bit
by a pitbuall? Then ask yourself how many times you've heard of the smaller "ankle biters" taking a chunk out of a person-- yorkies, scottish terriers, chi dogs, etc.
I don't know about other communities, but I know in mine that it tends to be the dogs that fall into those "lap dogs" that seem more apt to bite than bullies.

Don't get me wrong - I do mean as far as the aggression towards people. The pitbulls, with bad owners, were bred at times to fight due to their extreme pain tolerance.
Again, that did not mean that they were bred to fight with people. It meant they bred them to have a strong "prey drive" to other dogs. That trait has been less prevalent
in this breed for quite some time and is continuing to be bred out of their bloodlines as they continue to exceed the expectations as "good citizen" dogs and "family pets"
that are ideal.

Before you condemn the breed, google the breed and google them well. You will find the same information that I did and think twice about excluding the dog as a possible
"rescue" dog. Give the "bad rap" to their owners and the abusers of their past. The dogs aren't the bad eggs... the owners that abused them are.

My dog is not a pitbull but she is an alpha dog. I'd be any amount of money that she is more of an aggressor in her mind as the pack leader. The same could hold true for
any pitbull to not be the alpha dog and just want to play play play.

Know the facts before assuming... again, the last time I got nipped at by a dog was a little itty bitty thing that weighed less than 10 pounds. That seems to be the greater statistic
from what I hear from people that have had run-ins with less than nice pups.

Tank, Our Buddy,.. needs a home.

Tank is still looking for a home. My family really needs to get him placed soon.

We are looking for a special home for Tank. I see so many undesirable people with this breed. Because of this, their name and reputation has been smeared. We are pitbull people. We love our Tank and the breed. He is truly an awesome dog!

Tank is a 2 year old male pit bull. He is house trained and very gentle, but he wants to play ALL THE TIME and that is just too much for my 6 month old who is learning to crawl and our 6 and 4 year olds. Tank is best friends with our 13 year old son so he would be great for a family with slightly older children who know how to treat a dog and be calm around him. He loves to go on walks, run around and play fetch, and snuggle up with the kids on the couch. He gets along with some dogs, but I would be weary of putting him in a home with a small dog. If you have another dog, I would suggest researching "crate and rotate" and see if this is something you're willing to do, before considering Tank for your home. He does not like cats. We seriously thought about trying with a trainer, but my life simply cannot handle this right now for other reasons not mentioned here. I am unable to utilize that option at this time.

We never cropped his ears or anything like that. He is still young at two years of age. If your interested in Tank, we would be more comfortable being able to bring him to you, meet your whole family and see where he will live. We love him so much and want him in the right setting. I will be setting up meets. :)

I am charging a $50 re-homing fee which is negotiable to the right famliy, however, I think it is reasonable. Feel free to send me an email if interested. I am strict because pit bulls get a very bad name and if they are given to a bad owner, that is the owner's fault, not the dog's. This is a very gentle sweet dog and I"m going to see he stays that way. This was a really tough decision for my family and one that is causing a lot of guilt. Lost- Two dogs NarragansettArea (Narragansett)

My two dogs got off their leash when my husband was taking them for a walk in the Pier area of Narragansett. Their names are Fergie and Muffin (Rescue names that stuck) Muffin snapped her collar and then Fergie ran away with the leash attached while my husband was distracted trying to get Muffin.
Muffin is white, long haired and has black marks and brown spots. Fergie is short haired, brown with white marks. They are sweet, will come to anyone will bark at other dogs, and chase anything smaller than them. ( Corgi Terrier mix) They went missing tonight around 8 pm. Hello my family is looking to adopt your dog. My family has been looking to add a fury new member to our family for weeks, but have not been able to find one. Today me and my wife spent the day going to 4 local dog pounds, but could not find a dog that would suit our family. We are looking for a dog on the smaller side 40# and under give or take a few. ok, where do I begin. 1) No one, especially a professional pet sitter, will take this dog into their home. - He is unneutered, scent marks and wears belly bands-oh yeah! sign me up for that nightmare! 2) you are going to DISNEY, and you have the audacity to try to suggest that you aren't going to pay a ridiculous rate-ummm, yes you will since you want your unneutered dog to board in some one's home.-DISNEY is very expensive and you obviously have enough money to live it up in Florida, yet you want to cheap out your pet sitter...nice. 3) I do have to say Kudos to You for at least stating that you will be interviewing and asking the potential caretaker to fill out a questionnaire. And you are up front about your dog's needs.

Fisher cats/Titan/Rehoming

I check this blog everyday and am amazed at some of the posts. Fishers cats are destructive and are not pets. They main goal is to kill and carry lots of disease.
As for Titan I have heard wonderful things about this vet. The only reason I have not switched over, I use my vet to board my Cairn when I travel. She has helped so many people, and these pets get good low cost care. 300 is not a rehoming fee, that is a sale. I also can not stand to hear someone post I have to get rid of...my pet is a family member. When you take on a commitment, live with it. Then you would not have to rehome (sell). Please people have a heart.

Kitten (Providence)

My fiance won't let me pay adoption fees, lol, he says that pets are already expensive enough. I really would love a kitten and am looking for one, my neighbors recently got one and I brought my four year old up and he loved playing with them. He has cerebral palsy and it's really hard to find activities for him to do, so I thought I'd look to find a kitten that he can grow up with.
We're good pet owners, we have two cats already, one who is 2 years old and enjoys spending most of his time outdoors, and another who is 8 and spends most of his time asleep on our bed or in my closet. Are you serious. If that were my pet I would not leave it with a stranger that you found on craigslist. That poor animal has too many specific needs. You should start by asking the groomers if they recommend anyone that they know very well. They usually have many very reliable contacts.

Everyone is saying the shows off but has anyone even checked if it is...it says on kingsnake it is still goin on but then you click on the link and iit says "Please excuse the mess as we adjust our schedules and plan our next shows!" I'm gonna call the crown plaza and see if it's still happining...and I agree the show sucked but if it gets more popular then it gets more vendors then it doesn't suck and I don't have to drive all the way to New Hampshire or White Plains to go to an expo
