Nicholas Neighbors and Gus Bates awarded 1st prize at Science Fair (San Marcos, Martindale)

Dear Friends:

It is with great pleasure, that the parents of Nicholas Neighbors and Gus Bates share with you that their sons, working together as a team, have been awarded 1st place in the junior team category over all the 11 physical sciences at the prestigious Austin Energy Regional Science Fair.

Furthermore, their team has received the official invitation to compete at the All State Science fair at UTSA. Over 800 students from as far away as 150 miles exhibited at the Austin Energy Regional Science Fair, which is an official member of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Network (Intel ISEF), the the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. Further details can be found at:

http://www.societyforscience.org/ISEF/

Nick and Gus were each awarded a marble base trophy for their accomplishments.

As you may know, this Austin Energy Regional Science Fair is the largest science fair in central Texas and draws competitors as far away as 150 miles.

Nick Neighbors, as team leader with his team member Gus Bates, created and exhibited a project which was judged 1st among all projects in junior high school or middle school level for all the TEAM category - physical sciences including:

Chemistry
Computer Science
Earth Science
Eng. Electrical &
Mechanical
Eng. Materials &
Bioengineering
Energy &
Transportation
Environmental
Management
Environmental
Sciences
Mathematical
Sciences
Physics and
Astronomy

Please encourage Nicholas Neighbors and Gus Bates in their quest to compete at the All State Science Fair sponsored by Exxon Mobil at UTSA in San Antonio April 9th through 12th.

The abstract for Nick and Gus project reads as follows:

Title: Magnetodynamics: A Novel, Powerful Rare Earth Magnetic Array Exhibiting An Asymmetric Flux Pattern

Students: Nicholas Neighbors and Gus Bates

Mentor: Robert M. Neighbors

Purpose: Permanent magnets commonly produce a symmetrical magnetic flux pattern from each pole. If a magnetic array could be designed, engineered and constructed that exhibited an asymmetric flux pattern it would be useful in applications that required magnetic flux focused, shaped towards, or concentrated in certain specific regions.

Procedure: A magnetic array model was designed in 3D software. The magnetic array was visualized to possess axially magnetized, cylindrically shaped, grade 42 neodymium boron permanent magnets in a magnetically unbalanced configuration. Fiberglass threaded rod and glass filled polyurethane nuts were used throughout to eliminate any metal with the intention of preventing any undesirable effects such as eddy currents. Glass fiber epoxy tubes were crafted and fastened inside a mold constructed of polyethylene, plaster of paris and glass fiber epoxy. A composite mixture of epoxy with aramid fiber was used to fill the mold and construct the model.

Data: 324 measurements of magnetic flux in gauss were taken for the array at Dr. John Markert's UT Physics Lab. The measurements were obtained at equidistance points around the circumference of the most active focal point of the array using a hall sensor. Additionally, a three dimensional flux viewing chamber was created to display the flux patterns of the magnet array. The data was analyzed to show that indeed, the magnetic flux of the array was distributed asymmetrically.

Conclusions: A novel, tunable magnetic array which exhibits an asymmetric flux pattern is now realized for further research and industrial use.
