From the introduction:
An Appreciation
I have watched Mr. Van Loan's rise to the higher stellar spaces of achievement in screen writing from the time he forsook his following as one of New York’s leading journalists to become Director of Publicity for the Universal Film Company. He began his career as a photoplaywright with very little of the knowledge he now imparts to you.

This book is not offered as a course of instruction, but simply as a plain, straightforward review of Mr. Van Loan's ideas and methods of creating and assembling his stories.

The publication of this work has been the result of the following circumstances: About two years ago Mr. Van Loan was requested to prepare a series of articles on photoplay writing for the Los Angeles Evening Express, and later for the San Francisco Bulletin, the Oak Land (Cal.) Tribune, the Phoenix (Ariz.) Republican, the San Diego Tribune and the Hudson (N. Y.) Morning Republican.

When I saw the hundreds of letters that poured in on Mr. Van Loan, commending him for the wonderful aid he had given to aspiring screen authors, I made an arrangement with him to publish this volume.

Having been identified with the making of motion pictures for several years, I can heartily and honestly recommend this work as the most instructive and helpful treatise of its kind I have ever seen.
Lindsay McKenna.

From the beginning of the last chapter
Chapter XII.
L 'Envoi
In the series of articles which compose this book, I have endeavored to cover every phase of photoplaywriting. I have tried to show those who aspire to write for the screen where the majority of ideas are gleaned; how to differentiate between the good and the bad; how to construct the story; the way to build up dramatic situations and startling climaxes; the time, care and thought necessary to bring about success to the aspirant; how to market the completed product; the prices being paid for good stories; the great demand that there is for tailor-made screen stories, and the real scarcity there is at the present time of good photoplays. In fact, I have attempted to give the reader the benefit of my experience. What I have written has not been overheard, or the results of what I have read. It has been a reproduction of my own personal experiences in writing for the screen.

Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death By Myers (Santa Barbara) $75

Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death
By Frederic W. H. Myers
307 Pages
Published by Longmans, London, 1927

Very Good condition.

Scholars, such as F. W. H. Myers (author of Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death), who have attempted to catalog the range of psychic experiences, maintain that there is a continuous spectrum of experiences leading from common dream states to heightened creativity to ostensibly spiritualistic and supernatural manifestations of a bizarre nature. Such a spectrum inevitably suggests a relationship between ostensible psychic contact with higher forms of intelligence and ostensible contact with intelligences from other planets or other dimensions of time and space.

Biographical Sketch
Frederic William Henry Myers was born on the 6th of February, 1843, at Keswick in Cumberland. His father was the Rev. Frederic Myers, perpetual curate of St. John's, Keswick; his mother was the daughter of John Marshall of Hallsteads, who was M.P. in 1832 for the undivided county of Yorkshire. Frederick was the eldest of three sons.

In 1856, at the age of thirteen, he was entered at Cheltenham College, where his great ability and particularly his poetic powers were recognized at once by school-fellows and teachers alike. He had a distinguished career at school, winning the senior classical scholarship in his first year. Two years later, besides gaining the prize for Latin Lyrics, he sent in two English poems, in different metres, which were both successful. At the age of sixteen, while still at school, he entered for the "Robert Burns Centenary” competition with a poem which was placed second in the judges' award.

In 1860 he was elected first minor scholar of Trinity College, Cambridge. At the University few men have won more honors. The record is as follows: a college scholarship and declamation prize; two university scholarships; no less than six university prizes; second classic in the spring of 1864; second in the first class of the Moral Sciences Tripos in December of the same year, and fellow of Trinity in 1865.

In the long vacation of this year he spent some time in Canada and the United States. In the course of this visit] swam across the river below the Niagara Falls, being, it believed, the first Englishman to perform this feat.

In the October term of 1865 he was appointed classic lecturer in Trinity College, Cambridge, and held the office fl four years. Later he accepted a temporary appointment under the Education Department and in 1872 was placed on the permanent staff of school inspectors, a post which he held until within a few weeks of his death.

He was married on the 13th of March, 1880, by Dean Stanley, an old friend of his father's, in Henry VII's Chapel Westminster Abbey, to Eveleen, youngest daughter of Charles Tennant of Cadoxton Lodge, Neath. In 1881 he and hi wife took up their abode in Cambridge, which was their horn from that time forward. The chief interests of Myers' life were centered round two things-first, his literary work; secondly, the systematic investigation into mesmerism, clairvoyance, automatism, and other abnormal phenomena. His poetic work was known at first to comparatively few but later had a steadily increasing public; and the compressed force, the ardent feeling, and above all the combined imaginativeness and sincerity of his best work can leave few qualified readers in doubt of the genuineness of his poetic gift.

In 1881 he published, in the series of English Men of Letters, a monograph on Wordsworth, which Lord Morley describes as "'distinguished as much by insight as by admirable literary grace and power".

About 1870, or even earlier, Myers had become deeply interested in the study of hypnotism and other imperfectly explored psychical phenomena. He was the leading spirit of the small band of men who in 1882, after several years of enquiry and experiment, founded the Society for Psychical Research, of which the purpose was to collect evidence, and to carry on systematic experiments in the obscure region of hypnotism, thought transference, apparition and other alleged occurrences, in regard to which the common attitude has been well described as being mainly a priori disbelief or undiscerning credulity.

The following extract from Fragments of Prose and Poetry clearly shows the purpose that guided him throughout. He says :-'" A new discovery is needed,-to be made by no single Columbus, but by the whole set and strain of humanity; by the devotion of a world-wide labor to the deciphering of that open secret which has baffled the too hasty, or too self-centered wonder and wish of men. And such an enquiry must be in the first instance a scientific, and only in the second instance a religious one. Religion, in its most permanent sense, is the adjustment of our emotions to the structure of the universe; and what we now most need is to discover what that cosmic structure is. I believe, then, Science is at last succeeding in penetrating certain cosmic facts which she has not reached till now."

Two large volumes entitled Phantasms of the Living the joint work of Myers, Podmore, and Gurney-were first considerable outcome of these labors. Myers' researches in this field were continued with devoted strenuousness up to the time of his death. The results appeared in 1903 in the posthumously published book of which an abridgment is here given. His health failed in the autumn of 1900, and he died Rome on the 17th of January, 1901, in his fifty-eighth year.

It may be of interest to quote an extract from an obituary notice:” Undoubtedly Myers' life-work was the formation of Society for Psychica1 Research. Into psychical investigations he threw himself with the utmost ardor, and he continued this with unflagging pertinacity to the end. The gradually acquired conviction and intense realization the continuity of existence were with him an absorbing passion. No stronger belief could have been found. During Myers' lifetime the scientific quest of another I the aim of discovering a basis for the continuity of existence on other than religious grounds, was unpopular, and struggle was great. But if ever the subject be taken under the wing of orthodox science, then the name of Myers will be remembered with gratitude.”

1 1/2 cups bread crumbs
1/3 cup dried mushrooms
1 thick bread slice, crusts removed
¾ cup milk
Scant 1 cup ground beef
All-purpose flour, for coating
3 tablespoons olive oil
3 1/2 ounces chicken livers, thawed if frozen, trimmed and chopped
2 ounces Italian sausage, peeled and crumbled
2 1/2 ounces mozzarella cheese, diced
3 cups Meat Stock (see page 208)
1/2 onion, chopped
1/4 cup bottled strained tomatoes
Scant 2 cups risotto rice

Salt and pepper

Sartu
Preheat the oven to 3500F. Grease an ovenproof dish with butter and sprinkle with the bread crumbs, turning to coat. Tip out any excess. Put the mushrooms in a bowl, add hot water to cover and let soak for 20 minutes, then drain, squeeze and chop coarsely. Tear the bread into pieces, place in a bowl, add the milk and a pinch of salt and let soak for 10 minutes, then squeeze out. Combine the ground beef and soaked bread, then roll the mixture into hazelnut-size balls and coat with flour. Heat 2 tablespoons of the butter with the oil in a skillet, add the meatballs and cook until golden brown all over. Remove with a slotted spoon, drain on paper towels and set aside.

Heat 2 tablespoons of the remaining butter in another pan, add the mushrooms and a pinch of salt, cover and cook over low heat for 20 minutes. Melt 2 tablespoons of the remaining butter in another skillet. Add the chicken livers and cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes until lightly browned. Remove from the heat and season with salt. Heat the sausage and mozzarella in a small pan until the cheese has melted. Bring the stock to a boil.

Meanwhile, melt the remaining butter in another pan, add the onion and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes, then add the strained tomatoes and stir in the rice. Add a Ladleful of the hot stock and cook, stirring, until it has been absorbed. Continue adding the stock, a ladleful at a time, and stirring until each addition has been absorbed. This will take 18—20 minutes.

Cover the base and sides of the prepared dish with a layer of risotto. Combine all the filling ingredients and spoon them into the dish, pour the eggs over the filling and cover with the remaining risotto. Bake for about 45 minutes. Remove from the oven, let stand for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a serving dish and serve.

Return of The Devilled Egg

The devil likes it hot, and “devilled” foods are traditionally those seasoned with a piquant sauce often spiked with cayenne. Devilled eggs have become weak versions of what they are meant to be, and this recipe restores the zest that gave them their name.

5 eggs

3 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 teaspoon dry mustard

4 teaspoons Harissa (page 45) or even a bottled Caribbean-style sauce such as Jamaica Hell Fire

1 teaspoon curry powder

1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil

Put the eggs in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring the water to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain the eggs and cover with cold water. Peel when cool.

Cut the eggs in half lengthwise and remove the yolks. In a small bowl, use a fork to mash the yolks with the mayonnaise, mustard, 2 teaspoons of the hot sauce, curry, and basil. Mix well and mound the filling into the whites. lop each egg with a dab of Harissa.

Makes 10 hors d’oeuvres.

“The Fiery Cuisines”

Saffron Rice

Rice dishes in this form, commonly called pilafs, appear all over the world. This is an exotic version from Sri Lanka, which has one of the most fiery cuisines in the world.

1/2 cup green chile, skinned, seeds removed, chopped fine

2 teaspoons fresh ginger, peeled and chopped fine

1 teaspoon black mustard seeds

3 1/4 cups water

1/4 teaspoon saffron

1 cup long-grain rice, rinsed well

Salt to taste

2 tablespoons butter

2 ounces unsalted cashew nuts

4 whole cloves

1/2 cup lime juice

Pour 1/4 cup boiling water over the saffron and let soak for 10 minutes.

Cook the rice in 2 cups salted water for 10 minutes, then drain.

Heat the butter until very hot, add the ginger, mustard seeds, cashews, and cloves and fry the mixture, stirring constantly, until the seeds begin to burst. Add the chile, lime juice, rice and the remaining cup of boiling water and stir well. Pour the saffron water over the mixture and bring to a boil, stirring once. Cover the pan tightly and bake at 350°F for 20 minutes or until the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is tender. Fluff with a fork before serving.

4 oz (120 g) zucchini (courgettes), trimmed and finely chopped
3 oz (100 g) carrots, peeled and finely chopped
3 oz (100 g) cultivated (button) mushrooms, trimmed and finely chopped
2 shallots, finely chopped
2 tablespoons snipped fresh chives
salt
2 teaspoons curry powder
3 tablespoons water
8 oz (250 g) tender heart of green cabbage, finely chopped
grated zest of ½ lemon
4 sheets filo pastry

In a large nonstick frying pan, melt 1½ tablespoons of the butter over medium heat. Add the zucchini, carrots, mushrooms, shallots and chives. Cook, stirring, until the vegetables are golden, about 3 minutes. Add salt to taste and the curry powder and cook, stirring, for another 2 minutes. Add the water to the pan and then stir in the cabbage. Cover and cook over low heat, stirring often, for 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, preheat an oven to 425°. In a very small pan, melt the remaining 1½ tablespoons butter and let it cool. With a pastry brush butter a nonstick baking sheet very lightly with some of the melted butter. When the vegetables are cooked, transfer them to a bowl and let them cool a little. Stir in the lemon zest. Cut the filo sheets into quarters; keep the sheets covered with a damp towel to prevent them from drying out.

Place a quarter sheet on a work surface and brush the edges with a little of the melted butter, covering a border about 1½ inches (4 cm) wide. Place a large spoonful of the vegetable mixture in the center and spread it into a small rectangle. Fold the sides of the pastry inward and then fold over the top and then the bottom edge, to form a rectangle. Place the packet, seam side down, on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining filo sheets and vegetable mixture.

Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake until the pastry is crisp, 12”15 minutes. Serve warm.

Makes 16 small pastry parcels; serves 8

Sweet Red Pepper Tomato & Hazelnut Sauce
Romesco La Bleyda

This sauce is based on a romesco from a rustic restaurant called El Merendero in the tiny village of La Bleyda, which is at the end of a red dirt road outside Villafranca del Penades in Catalonia. There are never more than three or four dishes available at El Merendero, including grilled chicken or fish, which are delicious with this sauce. In the spring, they serve cal cots, a vegetable similar to a young leek, with romesco. You peel the outer leaves off the cal cot and dip it in the romesco. It can get wonderfully messy.

Makes About 3-1/2 Cups
1/2 cup hazelnuts
6 Large cloves garlic, unpeeled
3 medium tomatoes
1 thick slice white bread
I large red bell pepper
1/2 cup olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon each salt, freshly ground black pepper and red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon paprika
Preheat oven to 400°

Put the nuts, garlic, and tomatoes on a baking skeet and bake in the oven for 15 minutes.

Toast the bread in a toaster or under the broiler. Coarsely chop and set aside.

Roast the bell pepper over the open flame of a gas stove or under a broiler until all the skin is charred. Put the pepper into a plastic bag, close the top, and let sit for 10 minutes.

Remove the nuts, tomatoes, and garlic from the oven. Peel the garlic, and rub the nuts between towels to remove the loose skin (it’s not necessary to remove all the skin). Put nuts, toasted bread, and garlic in a food processor and pulse until finely chopped.

Peel and quarter the red pepper and halve the tomatoes. Add to the nut mixture and pulse briefly to combine. With the motor running, pour in the oil and vinegar. Add the seasonings and pulse until smooth and well combined.

Pour into a container, cover, and allow to rest for a few hours for the flavors to meld. Serve at room temperature. Tightly covered, the sauce will keep for two or three weeks in the refrigerator.

California Practice Guide Family Law 3 books (Santa Maria) $100

This is the standard book for attorneys to practice Family Law. It shows forms and procedures to be successful in the field. This is published by the Rutter Group, who are the authority on practice publications.

Regardless of the date of the book, it is my understanding that you can purchase or subscribe to updates that make your guide up to date with the most recent changes. I cannot attest to current updates to these books, but I can tell you that volume 1 has the proper updates for several years. The guide has the 2005 copyright which means it was probably last updated then.

In the front of this volume are updates from 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2005. It is likely that all 3 volumes were updated.

Volume 1 covers Chapters 1-6. Volume 2 covers Chapters 7-10. Volume 3 covers Chapters 11-20. It also includes the tables and index.

Why run down to the law library every time you need the practice guide? Why not have one right there in your office for fast and easy reference? This is your chance. At this price, it is a great deal you shouldn't pass up. You can pay over $400 for the 2009 version, or buy this one and just buy the updates and save yourself a couple hundred dollars.

Here is where you will find info on these books:

California Law Books (Santa Maria) $30

First of all, you should see my listing for the practice guides for family law. If you purchase those books at the price they are listed for, I will throw these in at no extra charge (except shipping if you have me send them to you). Now that I might have your interest, here is what you will get here. I have the Standard California Codes 6 in 1 book.

That means that in this one book you will find Civil, Civil Procedure, Evidence, Family, Probate, California Rules of Court (that is 6) in one book plus other helpful information (I won't bore you with it all).

You also get the California Rules of Court for Jan 2006 supplement, Oct 2006 Special Supplement, and an unopened July 2006 cumulative supplement. You get all 4 of these books for one price. You can get supplements to bring your books up to date, also.

This is a good start for any young attorney or someone that wants to do things for themselves. It is a good guide to get going, and you should have these if you plan to do anything legal. It will help you learn how to approach things the right way.

Paperback: 256 pages
Publisher: Ten Speed Press
ISBN-10: 0898150515
Product Dimensions: 9 x 6.2 x 1 inches

He has a collapsible dehydrator you can make to carry on board, helps to identify edible seaweeds and set up your on-board veggie food stores.

Neumeyer discusses topics I've not seen elsewhere, such as food production at sea, trade goods, diet for maximum nutrition with minimum weight and space, weapons, etc. the book contains many ingenious ideas, a simple solar still to convert salt water to fresh using just the sun's energy. He even has plans for a portable still that can be rolled up when not in use. The book also has a great plan for setting up a mini-greenhouse up in the bow of the sailboat to ensure a supply of fresh vegetables. Also ideas to use the time at sea to make in-demand items to sell whenever or if you pull into a port. All ideas can be folded down for portability and easy storage.

The appeal of heading to sea are lighter legal requirements in international waters. this book is a real freedom companion a must for grow your own food and survive with nothing but knowledge its a book that will change your way of thinking forever so hurry up it might just change your life for good. This fascinating book tells you how to feed yourself in the deep ocean. In the middle of the oceans it's not easy to provide yourself with all the nutrients necessary to keep alive - this book plugs the knowledge gap so that living totally on canned food is unnecessary. Fresh greens 5 months out from port can be a reality.

The necessities of life on a seastead: food, water, power, transportation and so forth, present special challenges. Among the many ideas he describes is a solar powered desalinator for seawater. He provides drawings and a description of how to make one. The desalinator is a flat box with a black felt wick inside and acrylic or glass sheet facing the sun. It looks similar to a photovoltaics panel.

A sailboat can slip in and out of harbors so quietly that the world, in its mindless whirlpool, full of fiddlers fiddling while Rome burns, will never notice you. There are many deserted islands and stretches of coastline where you could live like an enlightened king in the wilds on your own self-contained, fully-equipped living module'. With these words Ken Neumeyer invites us to consider a boat as a total life support system-living on board, at home, on the seas or in port sailing where you chose to go and moving on when it is time Sounds like a fantasy but he and many others like him are doing just that. SAILING THE FARM sets out to equip the sailor with the information needed to turn a boat into a survival retreat Topics covered include - Gathering and preparing edible seaweeds, Earning a living with your boat; Delicious no-fuel recipes; Survival tools; Long-term food storage; On-board money-making crafts; Vegetable gardening; Preparing for bad political and economic weather. Fully illustrated with diagrams and sketches this unique book calls the sailor in each of us back to the sea.

The real strength of this book lies in the extensive sections on living off the sea; this information is useful to all yachtsmen.

Offers advice on cooking with mesquite, shares recipes for beef, pork, lamb, venison, poultry, fish, shellfish, vegetables, sauces, and desserts, and describes the history and uses of the mesquite tree.

Exciting original recipes, from appetizers to entrees, for the mesquite grilled cuisine of the Southwest

The mesquite grill has become the signature of restaurants focused on the new American cuisine—and in 1985 alone, flavor- starved Americans bought more than $15 million of natural mesquite- wood chunks and charcoal to add punch to their outdoor cooking. Chefs from New York to San Francisco have discovered the delicious flavor it imparts to good beef, wild game, fresh seafood, and all the other diverse foods enjoyed by many people. Beinhorn's Mesquite Cookery is a collection of simple yet sophisticated recipes, spiked with fascinating lore and down-to-earth advice on cooking with this extraordinary wood and charcoal. It is a must for anyone who loves good food, good flavor, and outdoor cooking. Courtenay Beinhorn grew up cooking with mesquite wood on the San Ysidro Ranch in south Texas. She writes about food and entertaining for the New York Times, Ultra, Savvy, and many other publications. She now resides in New York with her husband and daughter.

Autographed book humorist Roy Blount, Jr. 1st edition No DJ (Santa Barbara) $45

About Three Bricks Shy of a Load
The Story of the Greatest Football Team Ever
by Roy Blount, Jr.
1974 First Edition
Publisher: Sports Illustrated

Dust jacket missing otherwise in fine condition.

I am the original owner.

Roy Blount, Jr.'s portrait of a team poised to dominate the NFL for more than a decade. In 1973, the Pittsburgh Steelers were super, but missed the bowl. About Three Bricks Shy of a Load, now considered a classic (Sports Illustrated recently named it one of the Top 100 Sports Books of All Time).

Any number of writers could spend an entire season with an NFL team, from the first day of training camp until the last pick of the draft, and come up with an interesting book. Only Roy Blount, Jr. could capture the pain, the joy, the fears, the humor-in short, the heart-of a championship team. In 1973, the Pittsburgh Steelers were super, but missed the bowl. Blount's portrait of a team poised to dominate the NFL for more than a decade recounts the gridiron accomplishments and off-the-field lives of players, coaches, wives, fans, and owners.

If requested, my personal letter of provenance and authenticity will be included with book.

I have a smoke free/pet free home.
