The character, Luke, who is a mere fifteen years old must leave his beloved family to take a job helping to construct the Erie Canal in order to help his family during difficult economic times. Luke is filled with wonder and awe as he discovers the impressive powers behind helping to build one of the greatest marvels of the 19th century. Luke soon discovers that all is not so easy, when he learns that two evil men plan to sabotage the canal. Luke must foil the plot before all of the hard work is destroyed.
